Vampirism has been used as a metaphor for various kinds of addiction in several films over the years, like The Addiction (1995) and Larry Fessenden’s Habit (1995). There are just so many ways to compare creatures of the night who need to drink blood to survive to humans’ many unhealthy addictions. What would happen if a vampire decided to try and kick their habit of drinking blood? Filmmaker Blaine Thurier (Teen Lust) poses this question in his new film Kicking Blood and the answer is captivating.
Written by Thurier and Leonard Farlinger, and directed by Thurier, Kicking Blood premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2021. The film stars Alanna Bale as Anna, a vampire who likes to read books and works the overnight shift in a library, and Luke Bilyk (Adams Testament) as Robbie, a messy alcoholic whose life is falling apart.

I first discovered writer/director Blaine Thurier with A Gun to the Head (review) and while he's continued to make movies over the course of the last decade, it's been some time since one of them appealed to me – that is until Kicking Blood.
Anna is tired. She's become disillusioned with her eternal life, the people that come and go, the forgettable meals, her vampire friends. She doesn't see the point of it all and while she's not ready to go just yet, she's far from happy. On her way home one night she meets Robbie, a suicidal drunk with nothing left to lose. She allows him to follow her and the next thing you know, the pair are spending every moment together. It's not imm...

Jorge Antonio Guerrero (“Roma”) stars as a Mexican drug-cartel worker who falls in love with his boss’s wife and whose pursuit of her lands him in rural Quebec, where he gets mixed up in his host family’s troubles. The film is exec produced by Nicolas Celis (“Roma”), with Wazabi Films selling.

Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market, has announced its first wave of projects for the ninth edition, which takes place from July 20 to July 23 in Montreal. Among the projects that will participate in the co-production market is the zombie film “George A. Cannes: Neon and Vice Buy U.S. Rights to Harmony Korine’s ‘The Beach Bum’
“Road of the Dead” is the next zombie film following Romero’s last three movies as a director: “Survival of the Dead,” “Diary of the Dead” and “Land of the Dead.” Birman served as second unit director on all three movies, and has worked as a stunt coordinator and stuntman for more than three decades.
“Road of the Dead” originated as an original pitch from Birman roughly 10 years ago.

Enduring Canadian indie rock group The New Pornographers have plenty of fans among their music industry peers, but one of the most successful children’s entertainers of all time isn’t among them — at least when it comes to their name. Fellow Canadian Raffi, the singer-songwriter known to generations of kids for tracks like “Baby Beluga” and “Bananaphone,” decided on Tuesday to offer his opinion of the group’s name after they appeared on Minneapolis radio station 893 The Current. “Strongly object to that name,” Raffi tweeted, adding that he considers it “as bad as ‘food p**n’ etc.” Also Read: Stephen Colbert Reveals House.

The hottest Twitter feud on the Internet this week is centered around the man who gave the world “Bananaphone.”
Longtime Canadian children’s entertainer Raffi Cavoukian took to the web to issue his distaste with the name of the band the New Pornographers on Tuesday.
Responding to a tweet about the group, Cavoukian wrote, “strongly object to that name. as bad as ‘food p**n’ etc.”
He further explained his issues with the name in response to another user, writing “not a word to normalize in public conversation. consider youngsters, etc.”

The New Pornographers continue their power pop ways with new song and video, “War in the East Coast.” The catchy track has a bit of a ‘90s BritPop feel, which may account for the video’s style. It’s shot in a single, unbroken take as lead Pornographer AC Newman and his buddy walk through the streets and pandemonium—or war, given the song’s title— breaks out around them. The hooligans are played by the band’s fans. “We were excited to pay homage to those brilliant ‘90s music videos where the artist’s personality is prominently featured in one long, unbroken shot,” director Thom Glunt told Rolling Stone. Not one to overlook any detail, the band even got a vanity plate for the getaway car that reads Tnp Woec, which could only stand for The New Pornographers War on East Coast. The plates, however, looks like they are for the state of California.

The members of The New Pornographers are a busy bunch, yet the group hasn’t put out an album together since 2010’s, uh, Together. Since then, of course, Dan Bejar’s Destroyer released Kaputt in 2011, and Kathryn Calder put out Bright And Vivid that year as well. A.C. Newman’s Shut Down the Streets came out last year, and Neko Case has a new album, The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, due this September. But in a recent interview with Billboard, Case revealed that the New Pornos crew is back ...

Kathryn Calder's first reaction when she was asked to be the subject of a documentary film was panic.
"I was totally terrified to take on this project," the Victoria-based musician admits. "A film. All about me."
Anyone who has seen Calder play live – either solo or with The New Pornographers – will understand: as talented as she is, she often looks as though she might bolt from the stage at any moment in fright.
But Calder has a cause she feels compelled to support, so she decided to put her reservations aside and jump right in.
"A Matter of Time" is the first documentary from Yellow Bird Project (Ybp), an organization that collaborates with musicians to raise awareness and funds for charities, generally through the sale of band-designed t-shirts.
Calder had worked with them in 2006, designing a t-shirt on behalf of the New Pornographers to raise money for the Als Society of BC.

Here's a little-known fact about The New Pornographers: Parliament Funkadelic once kinda opened for them.
"We played this jam band festival a few years ago. It was somewhere a couple of hundred miles outside of Chicago," recalls Pornos main man/solo artist/indie rock community pillar Carl Newman. "And for some reason, they put us on the main stage on the final night of the festival, right after Parliament Funkadelic. So, as far as everyone at the festival was concerned, the night was over. We just had to laugh. Like, this is absurd. Why would they put us on after them?
"And also, why were we playing a jam festival?" he continues, clearly still perplexed about the misadventure. "It was one of those festivals where there was, like, a jam band would play four different sets. Like, The String Cheese Incident would play four two-hour sets over the weekend.

The Hood Internet -- Aaron Brink, or Abx, and Steve Reidell, or Stv Slv -- have spent the better part of the last five years creating unlikely mashups of artists like Rick Ross and Wilco. The Chicago duo's music has long been a staple at parties where the beer might not be the coldest and the attendees look comfortable in vintage denim jackets.
But on Feat, a forthcoming project on Decon, The Hood Internet graduates to all-new, sample-free production. And they've recruited plenty of friends: A.C. Newman (of The New Pornographers), Tobaxxo, Psalm One, Class Actrees, Show You Suck and many more make appearances on the album.
Feat is interesting because though it's sonically quite diverse, the entire album has a decidedly Hood Internet-feel to it. Maybe that's because they spent so long playing with pastiche, drawing from the catalogues of artists who were cool for being retro (say, Genesis,...

Three more tracks have been released from the forthcoming indie rock-centric Fleetwood Mac tribute. Below you'll find Mgmt’s clangy, obtuse take on “FutureGames" and Lykke Li’s delicate go at “Silver Springs," while Prefix Mag has an MP3 of Antony’s run at “Landslide,” arguably the best of the bunch. The New Pornographers’ “Think About Me” and Best Coast’s “Rhiannon” were previously released. All of the songs are off Just Tell Me That You Want Me, which also features Matt Sweeney and Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Kills, Washed Out, Craig Wedren and St. Vincent, and Zz Top ...

Mgmt and Lykke Li are among the artists who will feature on an upcoming Fleetwood Mac tribute album. Best Coast, The Kills, Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons and Zz Top's Billy Gibbons have also lent their talents to the project. The album is produced by Randall Poster, who recently worked on the Buddy Holly tribute project Rave On. Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo and Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis have also collaborated for a cover of 'Albatross'. The New Pornographers and Best Coast have both covered Fleetwood Mac in the past. The currently untitled album will be released in the Us on September 14. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed. The full tracklisting is as follows: (more)...

Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.
"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)
Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.
"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)

As a member of The New Pornographers, Dan Bejar tends to blend into the background (never mind the hair), but as the frontman of Destroyer, he’s impossible to ignore. (Okay, mind the hair now.) The group’s excellent 2011 album, Kaputt, is equally attention-grabbing, and it’s stuffed with the kind of jazzy, soft-rock ditties that send listeners into woozy hysterics. Your mileage on the good ship Yacht Rock may vary, though seeing Destroyer live on its just-announced summer tour may be the perfect combination of chill music and sweltering weather. Supergroups are peculiar entities in that they often end up sounding like the egos of their stars battling it out for the listener’s attention. I would guess this is the reason why a band like New Pornographers has always sought to distance itself from such a term. Although it’s true that many of the members of the band had solo projects or previous band experience (Dan Bejar’s Destroyer, Neko Case and Carl “A.C.” Newman’s solo careers), The New Pornographers was many of these indie stars’ first widely successful project, where they encouraged each other to expand out in their solo...

With the release of his video for "Legend in My Own Mind" by psychedelic outfit The Stepkids, Tom Scharpling's career as a music video director is beginning to rival his job hosting the beloved "The Best Show on Wfmu." Beautifully shot and joyously evocative, the video may be his best yet.
The video features "Daily Show" correspondent Wyatt Cenac as a street CD husker, and Kurt Braunohler, a favorite of the New York City comedy scene, as an eager customer who buys a Stepkids album from Cenac.
Braunohler, who was recently seen with his comedy partner Kristin Schaal in the documentary "Tell Your Friends! The Concert Film!", then enters a dreamlike haze in the video and jaunts through a slowed-down, sepia-tinted New York City, grinning and high-fiving passersby with an old-school oversized boom box slung over his shoulder.

When it comes to pop culture, Ukrainians have long been overlooked in terms of hotness — primarily because any Ukrainians who walked around wearing less than a parka died instantly of hypothermia. Fortunately for us, the 21st century marks the rise of hot young Ukrainian celebs as more and more sexy Slavs have been discovered by Hollywood and the world.
In the words of the Ukrainian passenger on that infamous Seinfeld episode, “You not say Ukraine is weak!” With that in mind, we present you with a list of fourteen sexy Slavs who could keep anyone warm on those cold Siberian nights.

These days movie trailers can be little more than turgid, stale recaps of the feature film itself; full on giveaways. The New Pornographers' latest music video "Move" takes the formula and flips it on its ear. Taking the guise of a movie trailer for a fictional biopic formally titled "Move: The Rise and Rise of The New Pornographers," the video puts a comic twist on the classic rags to rock-n-roll-riches story.
Directed by host of Wfmu's 'The Best Show' Tom Scharpling, the video is packed to the gills with celebrities including Wyatt Cenac, Horatio Sanz, Ted Leo, John Hodgman, and Donald Glover among others. If you've ever wanted to see Wyatt Cenac do cocaine off a slice of pizza or watch Kevin Corrigan play guitar with a gun, then this is the music video for you. True to trailer form, the video comes attached with another trailer for a film entitled "Expectant Dads,...

Happy Monday, my Voluble Commenters and Mute Lurkers. We Pajiban writers know that the real reason you visit the site is for the bonny mots of our Eloquents. Well, apparently, the world agrees as a Pajiba comment by Melissa was quoted in "The San Francisco Chronicle" this morning. This comment, dear readers, was from March 2010. You may forget what you write here, but Google never does. The tippiest of hats to my very own mom for sending me this link. (Sf Gate)
There is lit'rally no one I would rather see menace James Bond than Ralph Fiennes. I imagine he will have to wear many a tuxedo in order to do so. Are you imagining it too? Isn't it nice? Also, let's hope Ralph gets to keep his nose for this one. (Celebitchy)
This weekend AOL purchased my beloved "Huffington Post." It's possible that nothing will change, it's possible that everything will.

Talk about calling in favours. For their newest video "Moves," The New Pornographers and director Tom Scharpling have enlisted a ridiculously stacked line up of comedians, musicians and other indie-world folk to star, and the results are pretty charming--though it's kind of too bad the entire video peaks with the fake trailer that opens it up. Paul Rudd and Bill Hader (hey Hollywood, cast these two guys in a buddy comedy already!) kick things off with an ad for "Expectant Dads" ("Oh man, now we're both seven months pregnant") before the video proper starts and it's a hipster Where's Waldo.…...

Donald Glover! Bill Hader! John Hodgman! Paul Rudd! Julie Klausner! Gabe from Videogum! And so many more. The New Pornographers often have great videos — remember the high-school dance-off in the video for "All For Swinging You Around"? — but I think this one might be my favorite. Except for the knife-licking. I'm not down with that. I would watch both Expectant Dads (there's a website!) and Moves: The Rise and Rise of the New Pornographers.
