Scavengers Reign’s reign at Max is over, but a second season could soon come to Netflix. Max has canceled the animated series after one season, but Netflix is open to ordering a second season and will make a decision about the show’s fate after Season 1 starts streaming on its service, Variety reported on Friday. Netflix will host Scavengers Reign’s first season alongside Max on May 31 in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, and New Zealand, Variety added. Created by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, Scavengers Reign follows the stranded crew of the damaged deep-space freighter Demeter 227 as they fight to survive on a beautiful yet dangerous planet. The voice cast includes Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, Alia Shawkat, Bob Stephenson, and Ted Travelstead. The series earned rave reviews from critics. “The further [the Demeter 227 crew members] go, the more the gorgeously animated world integrates them into its environment as they learn...

The opening credits sequence of Scavengers Reign is heavy with doom, with images of the Demeter, an interstellar freighter whose wreckage orbits an alien planet, dissonantly set to peaceful classical music. Bodies float in the vacuum of space, escape pods burn up in the atmosphere, and the leaping flames of a sun hint at the cause of the disaster. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the series that follows, a superb survival story depicting both the planet’s natural beauty and the violent, horrible ends it can visit upon the people who encounter it.
Rendered in a detailed 2D style by the prolific animation studio Titmouse, each of the show’s 12 half-hour episodes cuts between multiple perspectives. After all, the Demeter’s few survivors are scattered in different terrestrial environments, unaware of one another’s existence, and the series delights in foregrounding their often ingenious use of the local ecosystem to survive.

"We just can't help the instinct to give meaning to things we don't understand..." Indeed, we always fall for this. Max has revealed their stellar official trailer for an animated sci-fi series called Scavengers Reign, created by animation filmmakers Joe Bennett & Charles Huettner based on their own short. I can't wait to watch! This exquisite adventure is about a crew exploring a "hostile world allowed to thrive without human interference" on an "unforgiving alien planet." The visuals are stunning! Just look at all of this! Wowza. So many extraordinary shots in here, all on an entirely imagined distant world. The voice cast features Wunmi Mosaku, Bob Stephenson, Sunita Mani, Ted Travelstead, and Alia Shawkat. After their deep-space freighter is damaged, the stranded crew of the Demeter crash down on a beautiful yet dangerous planet. As the group uncovers the true nature of this place, they must do everything in their...

"This place... it's like a puzzle. Nothing really makes sense in the way we know it..." Max has revealed a teaser trailer for an animated sci-fi series called Scavengers Reign, created by animation filmmakers Joe Bennett & Charles Huettner based on their own short. This exquisite adventure is about a crew exploring a "hostile world allowed to thrive without human interference" on an "unforgiving alien planet." The visuals in this are absolutely incredible! While this look is common in graphic novels, I don't think we've ever seen anything like this on screen. The voice cast features Wunmi Mosaku, Bob Stephenson, Sunita Mani, Ted Travelstead, and Alia Shawkat. After their deep-space freighter is damaged, the stranded crew of the Demeter crash down on a beautiful yet dangerous planet. As the group uncovers the true nature of this place, they must do everything in their power to survive long enough to escape or be rescued.

"It's like they were trying to blend in." Check out this short film from animation filmmaker Joe Bennett, a strange animated trip into the world of Park Rangers. With an appearance by Bigfoot, too! Just wait until you see him. Derecho is a 10 minute short film, featured by Vimeo. It was originally presented by Cake on FX. As a slow building terror builds at a lonely park ranger outpost, two rangers are forced to test the limits of their humanity. Featuring the voices of Kate Berlant, John Early, Ted Travelstead, and Felipe di Poi Tamargo. The animation style is quite unique and it gets even better when the dashes of red show up. This is a must-watch-until-the-very-end short film, it all makes more sense once you get through it. Beware. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this release. Brief description from Vimeo: "As a slow building terror...

British rock stalwart Nick Lowe hadn't made a music video in 18 years, but in producing a video for his new song "Sensitive Man," which premiered today on NPR.org, Lowe went an unusual route -- casting a bunch of American comedians.
Lowe, whose colorful life in rock-and-roll includes producing Elvis Costello's first five albums, marrying a daughter of June Carter Cash and penning the hit "Cruel to be Kind," released his latest album "This Old Magic" to favorable reviews in late 2011.
"Sensitive Man" was directed by Scott Jacobson, who formerly wrote for "Daily Show" and currently works on "Bob's Burgers." Jacobson took a similar route by casting comedians in other very funny, yet quietly sad videos he directed for The National and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, among others.
This video opens with a conversation between Maria Thayer and Marc Maron (who recently interviewed Lowe on "Wtf"), introducing the idea...

In his new book, Your Wildest Dreams, Within Reason (Tin House Books), Vanity Fair reporter-researcher Mike Sacks assembles 55 laugh-out-loud pieces, with a little help from fellow humor writers, including Scott Jacobson, Ted Travelstead, and Scott Rothman. The collection of eclectic essays—which were first published in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Vice, Esquire, and McSweeney’s—incorporates Craigslist ads, letters to famous authors, and the occasional list. In the excerpt below, Sacks runs down the surefire signs (“orientation includes chemical delousing”) that your college is not very prestigious. Listen to the podcast after the jump.

These days, if you want something done right, you’ve got to crowd-source it. No mere individual can compete with the creative prowess of a few zillion keyboard jockeys working in tandem. And that’s doubly true when the subject is sex, something any idiot can plausibly claim to know a thing or two about. So, in the spirit of Wikipedia, which in a few short years has done for traveling encyclopedia salesmen what Craigslist did for street-corner pimps, we offer the world’s first (we think) Wiki-Kama-Sutra. Our goal is to create a definitive collection of sexual positions, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime. That’s where you come in: Email us (vfdaily@vf.com) the name of your favorite coital configuration, together with a detailed description, and we’ll illustrate the best submissions in a weekly post. Within a few short months, we should have a book deal an invaluable Internet resource!
