In 1997, Gillian Anderson won her first career Emmy Award for playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on Fox’s sci-fi hit “The X-Files.” After nearly tripping on her way up to the stage (watch above), the actress praised Helen Mirren, who presented her with the statuette, and thanked her friends and family. Now, 24 years later, Anderson is on track to claim Emmy #2 thanks to her buzzed-about role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”
As of this writing, all 24 of our Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict Anderson will prevail in Best Drama Supporting Actress. That translates to overwhelming 4/1 odds to win. Her fellow nominees, in order of our Experts’ rankings, are Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Aunjanue Ellis (“Lovecraft Country”), Emerald Fennell (“The Crown”) and Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”).

Jason Sudeikis has already won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Award for his lovable role on the Apple TV Plus series “Ted Lasso.” Will he score an Emmy goal next? All 24 of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts say yes. Their united support translates to leading 3/1 combined odds for Sudeikis in Best Comedy Actor, far ahead of the second-place contender, Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”). The other nominees are Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) in third place, Kenan Thompson (“Kenan”) in fourth place and William H. Macy (“Shameless”) in fifth place.

One of the hottest races at the 2021 Emmys is undoubtedly Best Comedy Actress. For much of the season, Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”) has dominated Gold Derby’s odds with a majority of our everyday Users predicting her to win for the HBO Max comedy. However, most of our Emmy Experts who hail from major media outlets have now switched to another HBO Max scene-stealer, Jean Smart (“Hacks”). Which group do You think is right? If Gold Derby’s predictions are true that “Sylvie’s Love” will win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, it would be a first for Amazon Prime Video. Previously the streamer contended once in this category for “King Lear” (2019), losing to Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” The new telefilm stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie, a 1950s record store worker who has dreams of becoming a television producer. She soon falls in love with Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) and they begin a years-long, on-again/off-again relationship.
Director/producer Eugene Ashe also wrote the film that originally had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. That’s where Amazon acquired distribution rights, eventually releasing in on December 23, just in time for the holidays. At the Critics Choice Awards, “Sylvie’s Love” was nominated for Best TV Movie and Thompson for Best Actress. It also won the Image Award for Ashe for Best Director.

Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee for “Training Day”, “Before Sunset”, “Before Midnight” and “Boyhood”, but he’s never been recognized at the Emmy Awards. Until now?
Not only does Hawke play famed abolitionist John Brown on Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” but he’s also on the Emmy ballot for writing and producing the limited series. That means he could get a whopping three Emmy noms for this project alone. Hawke was recently nominated as a lead actor at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, losing to Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”) both times. The good news for Hawke? Ruffalo is not eligible at this year’s Emmys since he claimed last year’s prize.

While the majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are predicting a win for Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) in Best Comedy Actor, this category is ripe for an upset. Of our 20 prognosticators from major media outlets, one goes rogue in predicting Ted Danson (“The Good Place”) will actually win. It wouldn’t be the first time the legendary TV actor prevailed for his show’s final season — after all, he did the exact same thing for another NBC comedy in 1993.

Danson was nominated seven times for “Cheers” as bartender Sam Malone before finally winning in 1990. He then had two more losses prior to his 1993 victory for the show’s farewell year. Jim Parsons won four Emmys for “The Big Bang Theory,” and now he gives a showy, against-type performance as an exploitative talent agent in “Hollywood,” so it’s no surprise that he’s the Emmy front-runner for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? It’s no secret that one of Emmy’s worst blunders in recent memory was to deny Steve Carell a trophy for his iconic performance as buffoonish boss Michael Scott on NBC’s “The Office.” Indeed, Carell lost Best Comedy Actor six times between 2006 and 2011, just one shy of the category record shared by John Goodman, Hal Linden and Matt LeBlanc. Female crime fighters have won many times at the Emmys, from “Cagney and Lacey” stars Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly, to “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” crusader Mariska Hargitay. This year the front-runner in the race for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress according to our latest racetrack odds fits that bill. So will Toni Collette (“Unbelievable”) really prevail?
SEEThe year of Merritt Wever: She could go on an ‘Unbelievable’ ‘Run’ at the Emmys with Two leading roles
Collette gets leading odds of 37/10 for her role as Detective Grace Rasmussen, who is investigating a series of horrific rapes. It’s a performance full of righteous indignation as she considers whether a member of law enforcement may have committed the crimes, so her dogged determination in pursuing justice for victimized women is actually a lot like Hargitay’s on “Svu.”

With last year’s Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series, “Fleabag,” out of the way, will voters go back to 2018 champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” or embrace “Schitt’s Creek” for the first time? According to the Expert journalists we’ve polled from major media outlets, it could go either way. But “Creek” just moved ever so slightly ahead in their forecasts as of this writing.
These 10 Experts say “Schitt’s Creek” will win: Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Chris Harnick (E!), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo).

After five seasons on the air, will AMC’s “Better Call Saul” win Best Drama Series at the Emmy Awards? One of Gold Derby’s Experts is feeling s’all good, man about her gutsy prediction: Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com). She picks this “Breaking Bad” spinoff to win ahead of the other front-runners, HBO’s “Succession” and Netflix’s “The Crown,” which translates to third-place odds of 7/1. Don’t forget, “Breaking Bad” didn’t win Best Drama Series until its fifth year, so there is precedent for “Better Call Saul” to prevail late in its run.
Season 5 of “Better Call Saul” just aired this spring, which puts it top of mind as TV academy members begin marking their ballots. Also in its favor? The new episodes received a remarkably strong reception from critics and audiences alike; it has a 99% fresh score at Rotten Tomatoes and a 92% rating at MetaCritic.

Issa Rae broke out in the fall of 2016 when her HBO series “Insecure” premiered. She earned a Golden Globe nomination right out of the gate, but it took her until 2018 for her to receive her first Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Actress for the show’s second season. She didn’t quite make the cut in 2019, but there’s a good chance for her to make a comeback in 2020.
Rae co-created the show with Larry Wilmore and is a writer and producer as well as the lead actress, which makes her a lot like other Emmy favorites who contribute to their shows behind-the-scenes including past Best Comedy Actress nominees Lena Dunham (“Girls”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”) and Best Comedy Actress winners Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”).

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) is on the cusp of wrapping up one of the greatest winning streaks in Primetime Emmy history. She’s undefeated in the Best Comedy Actress race with six wins (2012-2017) for playing self-serving politician Selina Meyer. This year she could win lucky number-seven, which would make history for the actress in a couple of ways. But might this be her toughest challenge yet?
As of this writing Louis-Dreyfus is the heavy favorite with leading odds of 17/5 based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby’s registered users. That includes an overwhelming 26 out of 30 Expert journalists who say she’ll win again: Jen Chaney (Vulture), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Eric Deggans (NPR), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Pete Hammond (Deadline), Chris Harnick (E!), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O...

Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) is the defending Emmy champion for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for her role as brash comedy manager Susie Myerson. Emmy voters love repeat winners in this race, Borstein plays the kind of scene-stealing role that often wins multiple comedy Emmys, and “Maisel” is the top laffer this year with 20 nominations. So she’ll definitely win again, right? Not so fast.
As of this writing Borstein is the front-runner to win with leading odds of 9/2 based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. But the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from top media outlets give the slight edge to her rival Olivia Colman (“Fleabag”). That would be familiar territory for Colman, who pulled off another stunning upset earlier this year when the “Favourite” star beat Glenn Close (“The Wife”) for the Best Actress Oscar.

Have the stars aligned for Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) to win the Emmy for Best Comedy Supporting Actor? He was also nominated in this category last year for playing the title character’s high-strung dad Abe Weissman, but he lost to Henry Winkler (“Barry”). This year, though, the shoe is on the other foot, and the odds are ever in Shalhoub’s favor.
As of this writing Shalhoub is the front-runner with leading odds of 71/20 based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby’s registered users. Bill Hader (“Barry”) surprised many Emmy pundits in 2018 when he won Best Comedy Actor over the defending champ Donald Glover (“Atlanta”). But “Atlanta” didn’t air any new episodes during the 2018-2019 eligibility period, so Hader won’t have to worry about Glover this time. Does that mean Hader is a lock to win again for his role as HBO’s title hit man? Not necessarily. Glover’s gone for now, but that doesn’t mean Hader has this category all to himself.
Hader is the heavy favorite, though. He gets leading odds of 10/3 based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. The Emmys are right around the corner, bbut predicting Best Comedy Series hasn’t gotten any easier. There’s still a three-way tie between “Fleabag,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Veep,” all of which get leading odds of 11/2. But the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from top media outlets are ever so slightly leaning in one direction over the others. A plurality of them say “Veep” will be victorious for the fourth time.

While the overwhelming majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) will win Best Drama Actress, two pundits are going rogue. Both Nikki Novak (Fandango) and Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) instead believe Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”) will ride Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon up to the podium on September 22. It’s the HBO actress’ first lead Emmy nomination after previously receiving three supporting bids.
Clarke, who’s just been announced as an Emmy presenter, notably faces off against Oh and Jodie Comer from “Killing Eve,” which has many awards watchers wondering if a vote-split could be on the horizon. If “Killing Eve” fans can’t decide between who to vote for, then a third contender like Clarke could benefit from the lack of consensus and pull off a shocker on Emmy night.

According to Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets, one of the trophies HBO’s fantasy epic is predicted to take home on Sept. 22 is Best Drama Series. The comedy music duo Flight of the Conchords — New Zealanders Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie — have been gradually racking up kudos for more than a decade, but Egot is around the corner for one of them. The Emmys are going to look a lot like the Grammys, at least in one category at this weekend’s Creative Arts Awards. The front-runners to win Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) are Beyonce‘s concert documentary “Homecoming” and Bruce Springsteen‘s stage-to-screen performance of “Springsteen on Broadway.” Between them they have won an astonishing 43 Grammys, but neither has been awarded yet by the television academy. Just last month, four of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predicted a Best Comedy Series victory for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Now that number has increased to five (out of 26). Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets believe we’ll all see a TV repeat this year in Best Comedy Actor, as Bill Hader is the overwhelming front-runner to win his second consecutive trophy for playing hitman-turned-actor Barry Block on HBO’s “Barry.” However, our group of 24 prognosticators aren’t unanimous in their thinking, as Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”), Ted Danson (“The Good Place”) and Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) also receive fair support.

The stranglehold that “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” has held on Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie has been released, with a new front-runner emerging in the form of “Deadwood: The Movie.” As more and more of our Emmy Experts watched HBO’s reunion telefilm, which was released on the final day of Emmy eligibility, it continued to creep up our winner’s chart. If Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are correct, then we can expect “Veep” to win its fourth (and final) trophy this year as Best Comedy Series. HBO’s political satire prevailed in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but it was not eligible for Emmys in 2018 as it took that year off due to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ cancer treatment. Now 19 of our 24 Emmyologists from major media outlets believe that “Veep” will have the last laugh yet again. Amazon’s period dramedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which took advantage of “Veep’s” absence last year and ran off with the top trophy, is the favorite to upset the front-runner by four of our Experts. But there’s also a dark horse in HBO’s hitman-turned-actor comedy “Barry,” which has the support of one Expert.

HBO‘s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” is the three-time defending champion for Best Variety Talk Series at the Emmys, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s guaranteed to four-peat this year. While it is indeed the front-runner again according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, several of the Expert journalists from top media outlets we’ve polled think “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will overtake him this time. Easier said than done?
When it comes to talk shows at the Emmys, it’s tough to stop a winning streak once it gets started. “The Late Show with David Letterman” won Best Variety Series five times in a row (1998-2002). Immediately after that “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” won 10 times in a row (2003-2012). Then Colbert won twice with his previous series, “The Colbert Report” (2013-2014) only for Stewart to roar back with one...

Best Movie/Mini Actor is shaping up to be one of this year’s most challenging Emmy contests. There are at least six actors who could win, but despite the onslaught, Mahershala Ali (“True Detective”) is holding onto his front-runner position with leading odds of 9/2 as of this writing for his role as an Arkansas cop investigating the disappearance of two children. Those odds are based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users who have placed there bets here in our predictions center. If Ali does win, he’ll be the first “True Detective” actor to do so, achieving what Matthew McConaughey couldn’t five years ago.
Ali and McConaughey share the distinction of going into the Emmys with “True Detective” on the heels of winning an Oscar. McConaughey won Best Actor for “Dallas Buyers Club” a few months before his Emmys, and Ali just won Best...

The Emmys love to reward “Saturday Night Live” stars who come back to guest-host the show, but this could be the first time voters honor an alum for Best Comedy Guest Actor who was strictly a writer for the show, not a regular cast member. John Mulaney has been a regular fixture at the Emmys, racking up 2 wins out of 12 nominations as a writer, songwriter and producer over the past decade, but he has never been nominated for a performance award. This year, though, he could even win.
Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users as of this writing, Mulaney ranks second in the category with odds of 9/2, behind front-runner Peter MacNicol (“Veep”). But six of the Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets say Mulaney will prevail: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ed Martin (Media Village), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly...

As you may recall, three years ago Peter MacNicol earned an Emmy nomination in Best Comedy Guest Actor that was later rescinded after Gold Derby discovered that the “Veep” actor was actually ineligible due to appearing in too many episodes. MacNicol was replaced by Peter Scolari (“Girls”) on the Emmy ballot, who against all odds wound up winning. Flash-forward to this year and MacNicol is now a front-runner to prevail for his role as political strategist Jeff Kane, screeching uncle of Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), according to our Experts from major media outlets.

As Emmy fanatics are aware, the all-time record holder for Best Reality Host is Jeff Probst, who won four in a row for hosting “Survivor” (2008-11). “RuPaul’s Drag Race” took a while a catch on at the Emmys, but it dominated in 2018, winning five times out of eight nominations including Best Competition Program, where it defeated the three-time defending champ, “The Voice.” Now we think it’ll win again. It’s the heavy favorite according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, but our Emmy Experts are pointing to three other shows that could upset.
As of this writing 16 Expert journalists from major media outlets have placed their bets in the category, and 13 of them are predicting another win for “Drag Race”: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Chris Harnick (E!), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Ben Travers (IndieWire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo), Stacey Wilson Hunt (Gold Derby) and Susan Wloszczyna...
