Just how long have the 2023 Emmys been in the making? Well, nominees include “The White Lotus,” which hasn’t aired since December 2022. Likewise, Hulu’s “Fire Island,” “Welcome to Chippendales,” and “Hocus Pocus 2” (remember that?!) are all among the TV projects nominated, as well as more recent shows like “Poker Face.”

The fresh crop of guests checking into “The White Lotus” Season 3 has been unveiled.
The Emmy-winning HBO series is set to begin production in February in Thailand. While the ensemble cast will no doubt have stars announced soon, the first batch of actors include Parker Posey, Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, and Michelle Monaghan. Dom Hetrakul and Tayme Thapthimthong are additional fresh faces, as confirmed by HBO.
Season 1 star Natasha Rothwell was previously announced to be reprising her role. Deadline previously reported that a “multi-generational cast” will span 13 roles with nine considered to be series regulars. Casting calls for characters between ages 18 through 80, with roles of “a patriarch, a corporate executive, an actress, a couple of mothers, a misfit, and a yogi” are among the casting call, per Deadline.

One can only imagine the demand for an audition with Meredith Tucker, “The White Lotus” casting director who last year became the second person to win Emmys for casting across all three genres: Comedy, Drama & Limited Series/TV Movie. Her work on Season 1 contributed to a full sweep of all the Limited Series categories the hit Mike White creation was in, with Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge winning Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress over an unprecedented number of their co-stars who were also nominees.
Although “The White Lotus” was moved to the Drama categories for Season 2, lightning struck twice with four of its actors and five of its actresses still earning nominations in the even more competitive Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama Series categories. Tucker also got another nomination for herself in the Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series category alongside her Italian colleagues Francesco Vedovati and Barbara Giordani.

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

Editor’s note: The following interviews were done outside of the FYC event series, as there was no panel or screening.
When it comes to assembling the quintessential ensemble cast for a series, it’s an art, not a science; an organic melding of faces and emotional forces. No more was this important than in the high stakes second season of HBO’s drama series White Lotus in which we’re pulled into the posh, sexy allure of those upper-class denizens on vacation only to relish in their deceitful sides and hijinks, warts and all. The series not only propelled fresh faces to the forefront such as Natasha Rothwell in season one, whose Hawaiian White Lotus resort spa manager is returning for the Eastern religion and spirituality set season 3, but it’s also shown a fresh, dynamic range of actors we’ve seen previously, i.e. Jennifer Coolidge and Alexandra Daddario among several others.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with HBO, for this edition, we look at how the team behind “White House Plumbers” found a way to marry comedy, history, and the paranoid atmosphere of 1970s political thrillers.
There’s a scene in Episode 4 of “White House Plumbers” where Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson), one of the masterminds behind the Watergate break-in, receives a call from reporter Bob Woodward. It’s the other side of the exact phone call dramatized from Woodward’s perspective in “All the President’s Men” — the 1976 movie about how Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s reporting helped bring down Hunt, his partner-in-crime G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), and the Nixon White House.

‘White House Plumbers’ Review: Woody Harrelson & Justin Theroux Make Fine Stooges in Watergate Farce
Just before G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) embarks on his very public trial for conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping — all tied to the 1972 Watergate scandal — his wife, Fran (Judy Greer), stops him outside the courthouse. “Are you sure you don’t want me to be there?” she asks her husband. “Oh, no, no, no,” Liddy replies. “I am going to act like a jackass — piss off the prosecution, force a few errors, send the whole thing to appeals, and get it all thrown out. If I see you in the gallery, I might be forced to remember my manners.”
Liddy’s trial prep is but one of many, many bad plans the former FBI agent cooks up over the course of “White House Plumbers,” HBO’s five-part limited series about the inept burglars behind the infamous Watergate break-in. But few so succinctly summarize his perpetually cocky, off-kilter demeanor, or what...

There was a lot to love about "The White Lotus" season 2, but one of the strongest parts of the series by far was the stellar casting. From Jennifer Coolidge to Michael Imperioli, every actor knocked 'em dead. It's almost hard to imagine anyone else playing the characters we know and love, but sometimes a casting director is forced to make those tough choices. Even if they put together a bulletproof cast, it's always possible that someone will have to pull out of the project at the last moment.
That's exactly what happened to "The White Lotus" season 2, but the team was able to come together and recast the role so flawlessly that it's hard to say which actor was the replacement. Believe it or not, Ethan Spiller was originally supposed to be played by "American Horror Story" alumni Evan Peters.

For as much money and effort as she spends pretending that White Lotus hotels are the luxurious safe havens she so craves, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) nonetheless sees them for what they truly are. “What a beautiful view!” she coos at the cliffside Sicilian seascape greeting her upon arrival. Then, in practically the same breath: “I wonder if anyone’s jumped from here.” As meticulously designed by television puppet-master Mike White, “The White Lotus” is the archetypal gilded cage, luring the rich and ambitious to its shores, only to dash them against the rocks with ruthless ease.
Before the HBO series was a word-of-mouth hit in summer 2021, turned recent Emmys sensation, it was an experimental season of TV that cannily used a single location to tell overlapping stories of restlessness, lust, anger and pain. Netflix’s horror blockbuster ”Stranger Things” and HBO’s black comedy/whodunit “The White Lotus” led the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend with five awards apiece. “Euphoria,” the gritty teen phenom, followed right behind with four prizes, while Netflix’s global sensation, “Squid Game,” the Korean survival drama, captured three wins, as did HBO’s popular “Barry” comedy. However, the critically-acclaimed, mind-bending “Severance” (Apple TV+) managed only two wins.
On the historical drama front, “The Great” (Hulu) finally broke through in Season 2 with an impressive win for period costumes, while “Bridgerton” (Netflix) took period hairstyling, and “The Gilded Age” (HBO Max) earned period/fantasy production design.
On the downside, Marvel’s mind-bending “Moon Knight” only managed one win (sound editing), while the time-bending “Loki” was shut out.

The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys will take place on Sunday night, where hot races such as guest acting, music and stunts will be revealed.
History could be made with “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” from Disney+ could be the first animated movie to win for outstanding television movie, after becoming the first ever to be nominated.
However, we could see if HBO will be in line to make history if it takes the category for Barry Levinson’s “The Survivor.” HBO is able to win all the top series categories for drama (“Succession”), comedy (“Barry” or “Hacks”) and limited (“The White Lotus”). It would be the first network in history to win all four if achieved.

The acting awards tend to be among the most anticipated recognitions doled out at the Emmys every year, while several below-the-line awards are announced off-the-air. It makes sense, given that the lead, supporting and guest actor categories are where all the A-list names are housed, but it’s one of the quieter races that provides the TV Academy with talent to root for in the first place: the Emmy awards for casting.
Among the 20 nominations earned by “The White Lotus” are noms for stars Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney, Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy and Steve Zahn. Casting director Meredith Tucker describes the process to cobble together those actors as “fast and furious.”

The forthcoming HBO limited series, “My Brilliant Friend,” is casting two young actors for leading roles, and you can apply right here! Both actors must be native or fluent speakers of the Neapolitan dialect as well as classic Italian. The two talents will be hired as series regulars and will be paid $3,500/week with all travel, accommodations, and work visa costs covered by the production. Usually, I wait until the end of each "Boardwalk Empire" season to speak with creator Terence Winter about all that happened. In the case of the gangster drama's fifth season, which debuts Sunday at 9 on HBO, a preliminary conversation was necessary. Not only is this going to be the show's final season — earlier than Winter had maybe once intended, but the one he wanted after realizing the direction he had taken the story — but it leaps seven years into the future for Nucky, Chalky, Margaret and the other surviving characters, landing them in 1931. Atlantic City and the rest of the country are still mired in the Great Depression, while Nucky and many of his partners are hearing rumblings that Prohibition may be repealed soon. I've seen the first three episodes of season 5, and though the show is dealing with a shorter order (8 episodes compared to the usual 12), they feel very...

Director Miguel Arteta would like to be known as the man who gives voice to awkward dorks everywhere. "Dorkiness is my realm in which I live, so I celebrate dorkiness," the director of "Chuck & Buck" and "Star Maps" says proudly. It's been eight years since Arteta's last film, "The Good Girl," which was honored by the National Board of Review. He's spent a lot of that time helming for TV, but his newest feature, "Youth in Revolt," is worth the wait. Actor Michael Cera has never been better as Nick Twisp, a 16-year-old desperate to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams. That might sound like the pithy premise of a "Road Trip"– or "American Pie"–type jock fest, but "Youth in Revolt" has the substance to back it up, thanks to C.D. Payne's original novel. Cera's character creates an alter ego reminiscent of Tyler Durden in...
