Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Steven Soderbergh's Che (2008), shown as The Argentine and Guerrilla, are playing in June and July in the United States.Half way through Steven Soderbergh’s two-part, four-and-a-half-hour epic Che, ABC News journalist Lisa Howard asks the Argentine doctor-turned-revolutionary how he feels about “being a symbol.” The question ricochets off the sleek interiors of a New York room, 1964—the year Guevara addressed the United Nations on the threat U.S. imperialism posed to world peace. But in Soderbergh’s biopic, it plays over images from January 2, 1959—the day Che, having conquered the city of Santa Clara, raced to Havana to reunite with Fidel Castro and celebrate “the end of the war, and the start of the [Cuban] revolution.” It’s a choice that makes for a peculiar dialectic: a man who by the 1960s had already become a global icon...

Over two years ago, and indie thriller called Captive was in the works with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead as he was making his way back onto the big screen after ending his run as a governor. However, it appears another team member from The Expendables will step into the role instead. Variety has word that Bruce Willis, who ended up not returning for The Expendables 3, will take the lead role in the film about an American real estate magnate living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held inside of an armored truck for ransom, all while a detective (a role that has yet to be cast) specializing in ransom cases tries to find him. The script came from writer Benjamin van der Veen and a story by Nicolai Fuglsig and has Simon Brand on board to direct. Brand directed a thriller called Unknown in 2006, which also dealt with...

Twenty-five years ago last week, the Burmese pro-democracy movement was born, ignited by the passion of students with a dream of something better. It is an inspiring story for many, including Benjamin van der Veen, who wrote Burma Rising, a script on the Amazon Studios film slate.
We asked him about the story he’s told, his inspirations, and how the development process (which includes the production of a Burma Rising test movie) has gone so far.
What is it about the Burmese student uprisings that captured your imagination and made you want to write a script?
The student uprisings struck me as this phenomenal event where so many elements came together at a specific time in order to bring about change within a broken system. The military junta in Burma had been ruling unchallenged for 26 years, the country had been deliberately kept out of the international spotlight, and the people were being terribly exploited.

After dealing with some personal issues, Arnold Schwarzenegger is already slated to return to the big screen with The Last Stand, the English language debut of director Jee-woon Kim and also a recently confirmed substantial role in The Expendables 2. Now Deadline says the action star has lined up yet another project in the form Captive, of a new indie action thriller from writer Benjamin van der Veen and a story by Nicolai Fuglsig. Schwarzenegger wouldn't exactly be a big time action hero in this film as the story sees him playing an American real estate magnate living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held for ransom. But while the man is frantically searching for a way out of the armored truck in which he's being held within a Sao Paolo landfill, a detective specializing in kidnap and ransom cases works to find him. It’s good to have Arnold Schwarzenegger back. Yes, his last few movies weren’t very good, but I feel like being gone for a long time will allow him to make a great return to what started him off in the first place. Said return truly kicks off with The Last Stand, which will be coming in early 2013, although his role in next year’s Expendables sequel will be bigger than his appearance in the original — that is, it isn’t a cameo.
Deadline now says that he’s in talks for another film, Captive. The independently-financed actioner is written by Benjamin van der Veen and Kario Salem, and centers on “an American real estate magnate living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held for ransom.” While trying to get out of “his armored-truck prison cell hidden in a Sao Paolo landfill, a detective specializing in kidnap and ransom cases works to find him.

The return of Arnold Schwarzenegger is on. Not only will be have an extended part in next year’s The Expendables 2, his full return will be The Last Stand from I Saw the Devil director Kim Jee-woon for a January 2013 release, Arnie is going all indie on us in Captive, a new action thriller from writers Benjamin van der Veen (Che: Part Two) and Kario Salem (The Score).
Deadline says the film “will see Schwarzenegger take on the role of an American real estate mogul who is kidnapped and held for ransom while living in Brazil. As the story goes, while Schwarzenegger looks for a way out of the armored-truck he calls “home,” a detective works to rescue him.”
Sounds cool, and now the film is looking for a potential director.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's comeback is really back on track. Seriously. His first stab at a post-politics return to acting was hamstrung by an embarassing and irresponsible paternity situation. But a few months have passed, public ire has shifted to other targets, and Arnie is making appearances on casting sheets once again. He's got The Last Stand booked already, in which he'll be directed by I Saw the Devil's Kim Jee-woon, with Peter Stormare likely co-starring. There is also the possibility of a fifth Terminator film. Now he's in talks to star in an indie action thriller called Captive. Deadline [1] says the film has no director set at this point, but it does have a script by Benjamin van der Veen and Kario Salem from a story by Nicolai Fuglsig, who was once planning to direct. Instead he'll exec produce; with Schwarzenegger on board the scope of the film just got a bit bigger.
