Imposing and prolific character actor of considerable gravitas, invariably seen as powerful, stern authority figures: generals, senior clergy, professors, leaders of industry, and the like. He was on stage from 1895 in Berlin and appeared in films from 1913. Between 1905 and 1920, he was in charge of the acting school of the Deutsches Theater.
