Exclusive Updated: Showtime is looking to bring back two of its signature comedy series, Nurse Jackie and Weeds. Both hail from Lionsgate Television and former Showtime chief Robert Greenblatt who has a deal at the indie studio.
Reps for Showtime and Lionsgate would not comment but I hear the followups, now in early stages of development, have the original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, attached to star and executive produce. Sources stress that the projects are still coming together and deals are being negotiated.
The Weeds revival would be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, and would feature Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen, I hear.
Meanwhile, I hear the Nurse Jackie sequel would be written/executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive who were writers-producers on the original series. The concept is still being finalized.

For the Power of Pride issue, Variety talked to eight Lgbtq couples in entertainment about their love stories. To read more, click here.
Almost 20 years ago, Linda Wallem, the showrunner of “That ’80s Show,” had a big casting idea. She wanted Melissa Etheridge — the rock-star crooner behind such hits as “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One” — to play a record-store owner on the 2002 sitcom. Etheridge had considered acting, and she came in to talk about the comedic role. “I thought somebody like Melissa would give levity to the part and legitimacy,” Wallem says. “I couldn’t believe she hadn’t been on TV before.”
The part didn’t work out, but they became best friends. In 2010, after Etheridge got a divorce from her first wife, she invited Wallem — by then the showrunner of “Nurse Jackie” — to live with her and her four kids on platonic terms.

For two months, Variety’s writers, editors and photographers have worked on putting together our annual Pride issue. Given the nationwide outcry and widespread protests in response to police brutality and the senseless death of George Floyd, we considered postponing the edition.
But as we discussed it among our staff, we were reminded that Pride and activism go hand in hand. The Lgbtq rights movement was born out of the June 28, 1969 Stonewall riots. After New York police raided the Greenwich Village gay bar, arresting and assaulting its patrons —- many of whom were queer people of color — thousands of members of the Lgbtq community took to the streets to protest discrimination. The riots became a rallying call for equality.
Too often, the stories and voices of members of the Black queer community have gone unheard. In our issue, Daniel D’Addario profiles “Pose” star Indya Moore about how they’ve been...

See, this is the kind of thing Roseanne's Nuts was made for. What a waste that it happened now. “I’m never going to work in television again. I’m never going to even attempt it,” Roseanne Barr declared on Twitter this weekend, describing a host of problems that have allegedly cropped up while developing her NBC pilot with Nurse Jackie showrunner Linda Wallem. Revealed Barr,“They had less than no interest in including me in the development of a show that was built on 'my brand'. It was horrible, but I kept on." Roseanne later hyped her upcoming web series, which will apparently "feature nudity, obscene language, violence politically incorrect analysis & channelling The Immutable Goddess." Roseanne has since deleted some of her tweets, but suffice it to say you missed out on some piping hot grade-a Twitter beef.

Roseanne Barr might not be heading back to primetime after all, according to the comedienne’s own Thanksgiving weekend Twitter rant. Earlier this year NBC set Barr to develop and star in a new sitcom co-written with Nurse Jackie showrunner Linda Wallem, but in a series of Tweets over the holiday Barr made her discontent with that project known. “I’m never going to work in television again. I’m never going to even attempt it,” she Tweeted. Without naming Wallem specifically, Barr wrote of a female showrunner who disappeared on her for seven weeks and turned in a script she didn’t like: Related: Roseanne Barr To Develop & Star In New Comedy Series For NBC “[The] development process went like this: show runner disappeared for 7 weeks-never returned any calls from me-i was told she ‘goes in2 a cave’. I was also told that this was ‘her process’-and that the result would be fantastic.

She took home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Merritt Wever made quite an impression at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards last night (September 22).
After blurting out, “Holy sh*t,” to her costar Edie Falco, the “Nurse Jackie” starlet took the stage at the Nokia Theatre and simply stated, “Oh my God, thanks so much. Thank you so much. Um, I gotta go. Bye!”
Once backstage, Wever noted, "I wanted to thank a lot of people – it's happening again. I wanted to thank everybody at Showtime. I wanted to thank most of all Edie Falco. I wanted to thank David and Gary and Matt at Showtime. I wanted to thank Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem, Richie Jackson, and…I wanted to thank Edie Falco very badly. It's hard to do those [Sighs]. Sorry."
When asked how she felt, Merritt confessed, "I don’t know yet. I'm scared honestly.

This story first appeared in the Aug. 16 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Wedding bells are ringing again for California's same-sex couples, who have been heading back to the altar since the U.S. Supreme Court voted June 26 to overturn the state's Proposition 8. An ecstatic Melissa Etheridge announced her engagement to TV writer-producer Linda Wallem (Nurse Jackie, That '70s Show) the day of the decision. Even straight couples got caught up in the excitement, including Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, who previously had announced they'd hold off on getting married until their gay friends could.

NBC is looking to make a big investment in Roseanne Barr as they are nearing a deal with the comedian for a starring sitcom that will go straight to series under the 10/90 model you may have heard about these days.
Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management on FX is under the model and FX also recently made 10/90 deals for series starring George Lopez, Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence which involves a straight-to-series 10-episode order that triggers a 90-episode back order if a ratings mark is hit.
Nurse Jackie co-creator and former co-showrunner Linda Wallem would work with Roseanne on the multi-camera family comedy [source].

NBC is working on a deal for a new Roseanne Barr sitcom. Barr is co-writing the project with Nurse Jackie co-creator Linda Wallem. Barr signed a development with NBC and Universal TV in January.
According to Deadline, the new comedy would go directly to series using the 10/90 model that has been used with the Tyler Perry sitcoms and Anger Management.
This would be Universal TV's first 10/90 deal. Essentially, the studio would order 10 episodes (without a pilot) and then, if the episodes hit a certain ratings minimum, 90 more episodes would be ordered automatically. The 100 episodes would give Universal enough installments for syndication.
Episodes are typically filmed on an abbreviated schedule in these arrangements and some would argue that the quality can suffer as a result.

We see a lot of arguments on this site about queerbaiting in television shows (most frequently with shows with out creators). But is it a problem? Twenty years ago, we were thrilled by subtext. Now we expect more – and we should. But how do you solve a problem as old as television itself?
As expected, Monsters University dominated the box office. But The Heat took in $40 million, while the big budget White House Down disappointed with only $26 million. Does this mean that we need to stop blowing everything up and maybe try and laugh every once in a while?
I mean, even Steven Spielberg thinks that Hollywood has a blockbuster problem. And since he basically invented the blockbuster, shouldn’t we pay attention to him? I’m not just saying that...

Roseanne Barr is working on another TV comeback, this time with a big NBC deal.
According to Deadline, Roseanne and NBC are near a deal for a new sitcom that would receive a straight-to-series 10 episode order with the popular 10/90 model. The deal, which is similar to what FX gave Charlie Sheen for "Anger Management," allows the network to test out the sitcom with the first 10 episodes. Should they prove a hit, 90 more will be ordered through a syndication deal.
Roseanne's latest comeback attempt is a collaboration with "Nurse Jackie" co-creator Linda Wallem, The Hollywood Reporter also reported. Roseanne previously attempted a sitcom comeback co-starring opposite John Goodman in the "Downwardly Mobile" pilot for the 2012-2013 TV season.
FX recently ordered two sitcoms, one with George Lopez headlining and the other with Martin Lawrence and Kelsey Grammer, following the 10/90 model.
Sheen's sitcom on FX started off strong in the ratings.

If TV is high school, cable is the cool kids and 10/90 deals are like the drugs they’re trying to get others to take (because if you like a little bit of it, you instantly do tons of it). Well, peer pressure seems to be working on NBC, as Deadline reports they’re finalizing a deal to do a 10/90 show with Roseanne Barr that would be co-written with Nurse Jackie co-creator Linda Wallem. Reminder: A 10/90 deal is when if the first ten episodes reach a ratings threshold, the show gets instantly picked up for 90 more. Not much else is known about the show’s plot. May we suggest Roseanne play Anne, a woman who buys a local waterhole called the “Rose,” so then it can be Roseanne Barr's Rose, Anne’s Bar.
