When Bob Dylan’s Time Out of Mind hit shelves on Sept. 30, 1997, it was hailed by fans and critics as his best work in decades. The Daniel Lanois-produced LP won a Grammy for Album of the Year, kickstarted an incredible period of renewed vitality for Dylan, and forever silenced any doubters who felt he’d never recapture the magic of his early years. Just about the only person unhappy with the album was Bob Dylan himself.

Damn right, he’s got his own doc. Buddy Guy, the blues legend whose 1991 “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues” firmly established him as part of the form’s upper firmament after decades of work, is the subject of a two-hour “American Masters” documentary premiering this week.
It’s a big week for Guy beyond the documentary: He turns 85 on July 30. In August, he’ll be back on the road for a national tour that takes him into April 2022. That represents a chance to see living history that encompasses, in one figure, membership in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (he was inducted in 2005 by Eric Clapton and B.B. King), celebration by the Kennedy Center Honors (President Obama helped do the honors in 2012), a National Medal of the Arts (bestowed by Prsident Bush in 2003), a Grammy lifetime achievement award (2016) and many more. Last summer, Liza Richardson read the script for the first episode of Lovecraft Country, and she tried to wrap her head around how she might choose music for the show.
“I could tell how unique it was,” the veteran music supervisor says. The series, which is set in 1955, stars Jonathan Majors as Atticus Freeman. In the first episode, he — along with Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and his childhood friend Leti (Jurnee Smollett) — takes a journey across Jim Crow America in search of his father, uncovering monsters both fictional and very real.

Tony Glover, the influential blues harmonica player who was a longtime peer of Bob Dylan and helped teach Mick Jagger how to play, died Wednesday, the Star Tribune reports. Glover reportedly died of natural causes after being hospitalized earlier this month. He was 79.
Glover made a lasting impression on a generation of musicians as a member of the blues and folk trio, Koerner, Ray and Glover, which also included John Koerner and Dave Ray. The group put out three albums in the early Sixties via Elektra — 1963’s Blues, Rags and Hollers,...

During the blues revival and rediscovery of the Sixties, few dominated like Paul Butterfield, the hard-puffing, hard-living harmonica player and band leader. Assertive and experimental Butterfield Blues Band albums like 1966’s East-West, featuring equally manic and inspired guitarist Mike Bloomfield, were essential college-dorm listening. And during the following decade, Butterfield’s mighty harmonica powered a version of “Mystery Train” at the Band’s Last Waltz concert and movie.

For most of us, “the blues” are a music genre, or a mood. For Buddy Guy, they’re as much a part of him as the air he breathes. At 81, the legendary guitarist is one of the last surviving of the mid-20th-century bluesmen who migrated from the American South to Chicago, started playing their music on electric instruments, and changed the course of music forever. Perusing some of the titles in Guy’s discography — A Man and the Blues, Pleading the Blues, Damn, Right I’ve Got the Blues — you get an idea of how the music has impacted him,...

Mariann Lewinsky curates several strands at Bologna's festival of restored or recovered films, Il Cinema Ritrovato: this year, she commemorated the centenary birth of the Dada movement and Krazy Kat with her Krazy Serial, in which surviving episodes of incomplete serials were jammed together with shorts and newsreels. The finest moment was perhaps when one serial ended and another, Abel Gance's The Poison Gases, began, but with it's opening title long lost, so that the caption "A few minutes later" seemed to join to wholly unconnected narratives. The preceding serial was Jacques Feyder's bizarre spoof, The Clutching Foot (Le pied qui étreint), which I realized from pervious excursions to Bologna was a parody not just of serials in general but of 1914's The Exploits of Elaine in particular, in which Pearl White was regularly menaced by a secret society led by the hooded and spasm-wracked mastermind The Clutching Hand.

Kidney Brothers: Coal Tattoo (Hearpen)
Having grown up and loved from afar, forced to do so after I moved to NYC, there are few bands still playing live -- four decades later -- worthy of my unbridled accolades and devotion but so it is with the heady agro-blues of 15-60-75 Aka The Numbers Band. If you dig music and happen to hail from Northeast Ohio, you know what I'm talking about. Having followed their entire career, I can proudly boast that I'm one of their biggest fans. Yet, it's no leap of faith or youthful nostalgia.
If you've seen them live, regardless of the decade, then you know the passion and verve that the brothers Kidney -- singer/guitarist Bob and harpist/sax/keyboardist/vocalist Jack -- share with their audience, regardless of the size, every single time they take the stage.

R.L. Burnside first recorded at age 40, remained obscure until 65, and was a legend at 75. Born on November 23, 1926 in Oxford, Mississippi, he spent most of his life in his rural native area, where he worked as a sharecropper as late as 1979, though he lived in Chicago and Memphis for short periods. His appearance in the Robert Mugge/Robert Palmer 1992 documentary movie and soundtrack album Deep Blues and his acclaimed 1994 Fat Possum album Too Bad Jim seemed to come out of nowhere to catch the attention of not only blues fans but also the underground rock crowd. But R.L. (pronounced "Rule" by his friends) had been on an Arhoolie compilation LP in 1967, and as his fame rose, several pre-Deep Blues albums reappeared with wider distribution.
Where did Burnside's striking style come from? The decline of the Mississippi sharecropping system and the region's subsequent economic slump led to many railroad lines being discontinued.

Chicago — Grammy-winning Blues musician David "Honey Boy" Edwards, believed to be the oldest surviving Delta bluesman and whose roots stretched back to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday in his Chicago home, his manager said. He was 96.
Edwards had a weak heart and his health seriously declined in May, when the guitarist had to cancel concerts scheduled through November, said his longtime manager, Michael Frank of Earwig Music Company.
Born in 1915 in Shaw, Miss., Edwards learned the guitar growing up and started playing professionally at age 17 in Memphis.
He came to Chicago in the 1940s and played on Maxwell Street, small clubs and street corners. By the 1950s Edwards had played with almost every bluesman of note – including Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Charlie Patton and Muddy Waters. Among Edwards' hit songs were "Long Tall Woman Blues," "Gamblin Man" and "Just Like Jesse James."

The Chess Records story, take two.
Alessandro Nivola (standing) and David Oyelowo in "Who Do You Love"
Photo: Alexander/ Mitchell Productions
It's questionable whether Chess Records, the great rhythm & blues label of the 1950s, required two movies to (sort of) tell its story. Nevertheless, less than two years after the so-so "Cadillac Records," here comes "Who Do You Love," which is so-so in different ways.
The story is essentially the same in outline: how two scrappy Polish Jews, the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, parlayed their family junkyard business into an R&B nightclub on Chicago's South Side, and then into an independent record label, which in 1950 they dubbed Chess. "Who Do You Love" is better on this part of the famous tale than "Cadillac Records" managed to be, thanks mainly to a clenched, forceful performance by Alessandro Nivola, who plays Leonard Chess as the overbearing hardass he quite likely was.

Chicago – Meeting with Columbus Short is encountering a true force of nature. Focused, intent and with a varied perspective, this up-and-coming young actor and performer has the centerpiece role in the new film, “Armored.”
Columbus plays Ty Hackett, an Iraq War veteran who takes a job with an armored car company to care for his 14 year-old brother after their parents die. After going through initial training, an obsessive co-worker reveals a surefire way to stage a robbery and split the cash among all the participants.
Ty is initially reluctant to join in, but the financial pressures eventually allow him to relent. The pick-up of the cash goes smoothly, but an unexpected interruption throws the operation into a tailspin. What happens next becomes more than the money, and has implications that will change everyone involved.

Columbus Short turned in a pretty remarkable performance in last year's Cadillac Records, playing the mercurial early Motown great Little Walter. But apparently he's just not quite ready to take on that serious acting career, as evidenced by his considering a return for Stomp the Yard 2, a movie is that is definitely happening now that Rob Hardy has been hired to direct it. Hardy was an executive producer on the first Stomp the Yard, and has his own scattered directing career behind him, though I have no idea how he plans to handle the street dancing that's pretty much the entire reason for this movie to exist. THR writes that shooting is scheduled to begin in Atlanta next month, even though Short's deal has yet to be signed. Maybe that's why they don't have plot details either?...

Little Walter - The Complete Chess Masters (1950 - 1967) Blues harmonica player and singer Little Walter died over forty years ago, but his influences still can be heard in many blues-rock recordings that employ the instrument. Following his tenure with Muddy Waters' band, his 1952 single "Juke" was Chess Records' first big hit (r&b #1 for weeks), initiating a string of r&b chart toppers for the artist that included "Off The Wall" and "Sad Hours." While maintaining his own career, Little Walter also played on Muddy Waters' solo albums as well as his other Chess teammates' projects. Assembled here are five full CDs of all of the master's Chess material, and although studying someone as mid-level famous as Little Walter might be too insider baseball for some, it's worth the listen, purchase, and Grammy nod in this year's historical category....

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – There’s a lot to like about the individual parts of “Cadillac Records,” now on Blu-Ray, but they never come together to form a cohesive sum. A frustratingly episodic film, “Records” crams too many stories into one movie, ending up more like a greatest hits album than a creative vision of its very own.
If each individual story in “Cadillac Records” causes young viewers to go back and learn more about the early days of rock and roll and the music of Etta James, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter than the film will have done some good, but I’ll never understand the logic of trying to shove all their stories into a film under two hours long.
Cadillac Records was released on Blu-Ray on March 10th, 2009.

There's an obvious omission in Beyoncé Knowles' new movie, "Cadillac Records" [Review Here.] - the story about the Chess Records label that left out Bo Diddley while including Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry. Diddley, who died last June, wasn't fond of Chess. "It's no secret that Bo had real issues with the Chess brothers and their 'creative accounting practices,' " Margo Lewis, who heads up Talent Source, Diddley's management company,...

Since the days of silent films, the lives of real people have been compelling movie subjects, and 2008 was no different, with bios of performers and politicians leading this year's award contenders. Nixon Gets Frosted Ron Howard's film Frost/Nixon, which Peter Morgan based on his award-winning stage play, tells the mesmerizing story of a disgraced American president and the tenacious journalist who butted heads with him in front of 45 million viewers. The historic interviews occurred over four intense broadcasts in 1977, culled from 28 hours of footage. Richard Nixon had been pressured to resign the presidency in 1974 in the wake of the Watergate scandal, and jet-setting TV host David Frost was determined to elicit candor — and a public apology — from a man with a reputation as a shrewd, self-serving political player. Frank Langella plays Nixon and Michael Sheen plays Frost in a rare case of two actors re-creating their roles from...

Starring: Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Beyoncé Knowles, Director: Darnell Martin Release Date: December 5, 2008 Running Time: 109 mins MPAA Rating: R Distributors: TriStar Pictures - - - Cadillac Records focuses a minuscule amount of time to what Leonard Chess really did. He was the owner of an influential recording studio in the 1950s, along with his brother Phil (who we rarely see), who gave black men and women such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Walter and Etta James an opportunity to excel despite their color. But the film and its director Darnell Martin, who also wrote the script, are more so concerned about the travesties and pitfalls that invade the musicians’ lives more so than the music they create. Making that the focal point of the movie Martin looses hindsight of Chess’ accomplishments as well as the musicians and their groundbreaking music. What really flourished was the music that Waters and...

The press conference for Cadillac Records was long and raucous-- lots of laughter , lots of talking over each other, which makes it that much harder to transcribe of course. But when you've got Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Columbus Short, Cedric the Entertainer, Eamonn Walker and Gabrielle Union up on stage, plus the woman, Darnell Martin, who directed them all, you don't really have a choice but to share what you heard. Cadillac Records tells the story of Chess Records, a music label based in Chicago that was the first to bring Mississippi blues to mainstream music. With Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Etta James on the label, Chess was present for the birth of rock and roll, and the galvanizing affect these black musicians had on the civil rights movement. Below are some of the best excerpts from the press conference, with questions above some of...

Cadillac Records
Starring Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, and Beyoncé Knowles
Directed by Darnell Martin
Rated R
Cadillac Records tells a great story. The problem is, there are at least four great stories trapped in it.
Less a musical bio-pic than a ordered set of key scenes set to music, Cadillac Records covers the birth, growth, and eventual mainstream disappearance of Chicago blues on the legendary Chess Records label.
But it's a significantly diluted version, one that can't keep its chronology straight, and if you're watching it for historical accuracy, you probably won't find much.
For example: Chess Records was run by brothers Leonard and Phillip Chess, and in the movie, Leonard is played by Adrien Brody, and Phillip...well, he's not in it. At all. He might as well have not existed in the history of the label. True, because the history of Chess Records has so many facets,...

Who would you rather hear sing Etta James’ signature tunes, the real deal or Beyonce Knowles? If you prefer the latter, then you’ll want to see Cadillac Records and even buy the film’s soundtrack, both of which feature Beyonce performing a few of James’ songs, including a nearly spot-on copy of “At Last” (listen to it here). Other actors in the film (and on the soundtrack) who do their own singing while portraying legendary music artists include Jeffrey Wright (as Muddy Waters), Mos Def (Chuck Berry) and Columbus Short (Little Walter). It’s a strange idea to pay tribute to a singer with a biopic or ensemble music historical and then replace that singer’s voice with another, more amateur vocalist. Yet Hollywood does it all the time and, surprisingly, the new performances usually turn out pretty good. Just listen to the following nine actors and actresses who...

The trailer for Cadillac Records has just come out, and it looks amazing! The movie follows the intense lives of several music moguls, including Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Leonard Chess (Adrian Brody), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Howlin Wolf (Eamon Walker), Etta James (Beyonce) and Chuck Berry (Mos Def). The movie is set in 1950s Chicago where sex, race, violence, and rock and roll played just as big of roles as music did in these artists’ lives. Cadillac Records opens in theaters December 5th. <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/L-6rhG4AtS0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-...

Another "Cadillac Records" has made its way out. While the previous clips show either Jeffrey Wright's Muddy Waters, Columbus Short's Little Walter or Mos Def's Chuck Berry, this clip focuses merely on Beyonce Knowles' character, Etta James.
Taking nearly 3 minutes to be watched, it highlights on the moment James is challenged by Adrien Brody's Leonard Chess to sing her Church Bells track, saying she is not woman enough for the song and asking her whether she knows about being in love. Taking the bait, James who is about to leave the recording studio steps back in front of the mic and sings the song whole-heartedly.
A drama musical chronicling the rise of Chess Records and its recording artists, "Cadillac Records" is directed and scripted by Darnell Martin. With a star-studded cast ensemble that also includes Emmanuelle Chriqui, Cedric the Entertainer, Gabrielle Union and Tammy Blanchard, this tale of sex,...

Two new clips from "Cadillac Records" has been put out along with a freshly-released television promo. One of the clips is premiered via MySpace, while the other is an exclusive clip from MTV. Though, both snippets bring in never-before-seen footage from the drama musical movie by Darnell Martin.
In the MySpace clip, it can be seen that Jeffrey Wright's Muddy Waters and Columbus Short's Little Walter are collaborating together in recording a song. The clip also shows Adrien Brody's Leonard Chess watching the session from behind the glass and enjoying the music the two are making. Meanwhile, the MTV clip presents the time Mos Def's Chuck Berry is trying to make his way into a club despite the skepticism from the club operators.

We've got another bushel or so of trailers for films just over the horizon. How promising are they? You tell us.
Monsters Vs. Aliens
Dreamworks latest animated feature has a group of terrestrial monsters (a blob, a fish man, a giant bug, a human-sized cockroach/mad scientist and a very tall woman named Susan) fighting off an alien attack. This homage to 1950s sci fi features the voices of Seth Rogen, Will Arnet, Paul Rudd, Hugh Laurie, Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert and looks flat out awesome. It opens on March 27 but I really want to see it Now.
Pink Panther 2
While it's hard for me to work up much enthusiasm for a sequel to a remake I didn't see which was based on a series that had pretty much run out of steam by the end, Steve Martin's Inspector Clouseau does have an endearing...
