The 2000 film Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) is my all-time favorite werewolf movie. That was followed by a sequel – Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed – and a very unexpected prequel – Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – and while I’m not as enamored with them as I am with the original movie, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them. The oddball prequel especially. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps trilogy as well and happen to have a Region B (or region free) Blu-ray player, you’ll be glad to hear that Second Sight Films is packaging all three movies together in a limited edition UK box set that’s going to be released on October 30th. Just in time for Halloween, which happens to be the setting of the first movie.
Copies of the Ginger Snaps trilogy Blu-ray box set can be pre-ordered directly from Second Sight Films.

With the previous episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, I wrote about a werewolf movie that I feel is underrated, the 1985 Stephen King adaptation Silver Bullet. With the episode that was just released this morning, I had the chance to write about my personal favorite werewolf movie, Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) from 2000. To find out all about Ginger Snaps, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by John Fawcett from a screenplay by Karen Walton, Ginger Snaps has the following synopsis:
Ginger and Brigitte, two sisters trapped in suburbia, are obsessed with mayhem, torture and death until they get a taste of the real thing. Bitten by a wild animal, Ginger begins to mutate into a sexy, uncontrolled woman, with some nasty canine tendencies. Is it a virus? Is it a curse? Or the first step towards becoming a vicious werewolf?

In 2000 Mission: Impossible 2 topped the box office, Gladiator triumphed at the Oscars, and the first X-Men movie ushered in a new era of superhero movies. Meanwhile in Canada, while no one was watching, a new hero was emerging. Her name was Ginger, she was a 16-year-old girl, and ok, she might have turned into a monster and killed a few people but, wow, was she a ferocious figurehead for females everywhere.
“That’s what she’s about. She’s about fuck you, fuck the patriarchy, fuck the standard, fuck society, fuck the norm. And to me, that’s a hero,” says Katharine Isabelle, speaking with Den of Geek via Zoom from her home in Vancouver, 20 years after the film’s debut. Isabelle was just 17 when she stepped into Ginger’s very cool boots and she had no idea it would become a massive cult hit.

Director John Fawcett and screenwriter Karen Walton prove you can teach an old werewolf new tricks in this inventive B thriller satirizing the miseries of high school life. Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald are two rebellious siblings who really take this goth business seriously, particularly Ginger, whose growing pains include turning into a werewolf. Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle are terrific as the supernatural sister act and Mimi Rogers is the supportive but ultimately ineffectual mom.

The werewolf film is a strange thing. You’d think, being such a well-known movie monster, that there would be millions of examples of the type. However, there is not. I’m not even saying that there aren’t a ton of examples of great werewolf films, I’m saying there are barely any werewolf films at all. A long time ago, we did an article on this site to coincide with the theatrical release of one of the Twilight sequels. It was a list of 30 films, 15 of which were werewolf films, and 15 of them were vampire films, to watch instead of seeing the new Twilight. The hardest part about finding 15 worthy vampire films, was narrowing it down to 15. The hardest part of putting together a list of 15 sold werewolf films was a different beast entirely. It was hard to put together even a list of 15 mediocre werewolf films. Sure,...

Ask a director what his influences were during film school and the answer probably won’t surprise you: “At a certain point, all I wanted to make was Goodfellas, and then at another point, I was heavily inspired by Spielberg,” Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett says. But get him to talk about the TV shows and movies he was obsessed with as a child, and that will change. (Killdozer, anyone?)

Orny Adams on Dylan O’Brien’s endowment, Jim Parsons is an alien, could Qatar lose the World Cup to the United States?
It’s Friday the 13th, good luck out there!
Lea Michele’s new boyfriend Matthew Paetz says he wasn’t really a gigolo and only dated clients for research, so that he could coach real gigolos through the process. He worked for Cowboys4Angels, which provides companionship for women and was featured on Showtime’s Gigolos.
According to Jorge Ramos of Espn (in a deleted tweet), FIFA officials have told the United States to be ready if investigations into corruption with the award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar turn up irregularities that would void the bid. FIFA may be looking to move the games from Qatar to avoid the bad press of the nation’s human rights record, and the need to play games in the winter due to the heat.

Orphan Black, Season 2, Episode 8, “Variable and Full of Perturbation”
Written by Karen Walton
Directed by John Fawcett
Airs Saturdays at 9pm Est on Bbca
The worsening condition of Cosima has been a source of constant concern over the course of Orphan Black’s second season, made worse by the possibility that Kira’s stem cells might be the only possible cure. The dilemma this put Cosima and Sarah in was alleviated somewhat with the discovery of Ethan Duncan, the scientist who originally worked on the project, and who might be able to provide an alternative. With Leekie now out of the picture, Rachel brings Ethan into the Dyad fold this week as Art and Felix discover a new member of the clone family, in a gripping episode that continues to add new variables to the ongoing conflict.
Rachel’s development has been a fascinating aspect of this season.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Hey everyone! Jeff here with a very special post… This one isn’t a movie review (at least not in the classic sense), nor is it in any way related to a podcast or a film festival… Nope, this post is my contribution to the Liberal Dead Staff’s “Movies To Watch Around Halloween” series.
If you can’t tell, October is my favorite month of the year; not just because it is when the Toronto After Dark Film Festival takes place, but because it’s home to my favorite holiday – Halloween – and it’s the one month out of the year where “normal” society seems to be okay with all things horror-related. But, then again, I’m sure you all understand that sentiment, so I’m likely preaching to the choir here… As such, I won’t waste any time explaining my reason for jumping in on the fun of list-making.

A Priest, A Rabbi and Your Mom Walk Into a Movie Theatre…
You might think that your Mom disapproves of all horror films on principle. At least that’s the stereotype: the wagging finger; the warning that horror films cause nightmares. But the truth is that this is merely a bit of parental judo, reverse psychology designed to push us to watching horror films, because nothing warns us and upholds the moral order like a horror film.
What are the elements of a horror film after all? There is a monster; there is a sense of danger (as critic Joe Bob Briggs puts it “Anyone can die at any time”); the deaths are usually gruesome; and there is usually a moral. If you think about it, fairy tales and horror films are not that far apart – they are even closer to one another in the fairy tales original Grimm-er forms,...

According to THR, Karen Walton has been hired to shape Ian Hamilton‘s Ava Lee crime novel series for the big screen. Dubbed “the next The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” The Water Rat of Wanchai is the first novel in a series that could ultimately become a franchise.
Wanchai, also Hamilton‘s debut novel, follows a “fictional Chinese-Canadian forensic accountant character who uses unorthodox methods to recover multi-million debts for her clients.” I do see the connection to Dragon Tattoo, though I’m not too convinced this project will hold out as well. But you never know.
Here’s the official, lengthy synopsis for the book courtesy of Amazon:
Ava Lee is a young Chinese-Canadian forensic accountant who specializes in recovering massive debts. Ava works for an elderly Hong Kong–based “Uncle,” who may or may not have ties to the Triads. At 5’3″ and 115 lbs., she hardly seems a threat.

There have been many portrayals of werewolves and other shapeshifting man/woman-beasts, in the media of film, but I can’t say there has been many memorable ones. With The Wolf Man (1941) Lon Chaney Jr. transformed into a werewolf at the full moon, and created one of the three most famous horror icons of the modern day. Werewolf fiction as since been an exceptionally diverse genre with ancient folkloric roots and manifold modern re-interpretations – from high shcool basketball players to American tourists hiking through the UK. Here is the list of my personal favourites.
#13- El aullido del diablo/ Howl of the Devil (1987)
Directed by: Paul Naschy
Paul Naschy, also known as Jacinto Molina Alvarez, was a Spanish movie actor, screenwriter, and director working primarily in horror films. His portrayals of numerous classic horror figures—the wolfman, the hunchback, Count Dracula, the mummy—have earned him recognition as the Spanish Lon Chaney.

“There is no pleasure. There is no pain. There is only skin.” - Pinhead, Hellraiser III
“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi
Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men.

That's pretty awesome. Pretty/Scary editor Heidi Martinuzzi (me) gets mentioned in this ChicagoNow list of the top 13 influential women in horror history along with contemporaries Jovanka Vuckovic (journalist), Denise Gossett (film festival director), Devi Snively (filmmaker), and Debbie Rochon (actress) and icons Kathryn Bigelow (director), Debra Hill (producer), Anne Rice, Ida Lupino (actress/director), Karen Walton (screenwriter), Maila Nurmi (Vampyra), Stephenie Meyer, and Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein.)
I'd have loved to see Cassandra Peterson, Brinke Stevens, or Mary Lambert up there instead of myself and Stephenie Meyer. But let's just pretend we didn't say that!

This past fall saw the debut of the supernatural horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body, and with the film's Blu-ray and DVD release being only a few weeks away (December 29th), I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at some of the most successful high school horror films that have been released over the past 10 to 15 years.
Jennifer’s Body is a slick production, equipped with fresh young stars, a hip soundtrack, and, of course, strings of "clever" dialogue. And that’s the criteria I’ve chosen to adhere to when working on this top ten list. Some of the films included here aren’t necessarily my favorites, but they’ve been impactful and deserve the call-out all the same. At the risk of spoiling some of the choices, I chose 1996 as the eligibility year for the simple reason that it was the beginning of the glossy,...

Fans of Joss Whedon will delight—four years after Fox cancelled Firefly, they pay partial penance with this well-intentioned Buffy: The Vampire Slayer remake: Jennifer’s Body. Like Buffy, Jennifer’s Body uses wit and comic book violence to observe that high school social climbing is a close cousin to cannibalism. Unlike Buffy, it fails to deliver the dramatic goods or to show more sophistication than a bitchy teenager...
Jennifer’s Body is high school in every sense of the term. The plot could have come from any semi-literate with a Metallica tee-shirt: A stone fox is possessed by a randy demon with a hankering for boy flesh. In the end, good triumphs over evil. We learn this in the first five minutes, but it isn’t until the closing...

Mary Harron, who tackled the controversial novel American Psycho in 2000, is up to adapt author Rachel Klein's debut novel "The Moth Diaries." Published in 2002, Klein's story is set against the backdrop of a girls' boarding school where a 16-year-old named Lucy suspects her roommate is a vampire. But, through this tale, there is a growing question of what is reality and what is merely stemming from Lucy's warped fantasies? Karen Walton ( Ginger Snaps ) reportedly drafted an adaptation, but it's unknown if she's still on board. If she is, this could be a film to keep an eye out for. A Walton/Harron pairing is intriguing. Since Psycho , Harron has directed The Notorious Bettie Page and episodes of The L Word and Fear Itself .

Fango received word of a new project that’s part of an exciting and growing trend: documentaries that cover the contributions women have made to our beloved genre. With no shortage of feminine—and feminist—critiques and perspectives out there, Donna Davies and Kimberlee McTaggart of Canada’s Sorcery Films have made their own contribution to the mini-boom with Pretty Bloody: The Women Of Horror.
The hour-long show, which premieres next Wednesday, February 25 at 10 p.m. on Canada’s Space channel, examines the experiences, motivations and impact of the increasing numbers of women engaged in the fear business, featuring interviews with actresses, directors, writers, critics and even academics who are passionate about the topic. Shooting in Toronto, Los Angeles and New York, Davies and McTaggart spoke with such notable horror figures as Pet Sematary director Mary Lambert, actress/Fango Radio host Debbie Rochon, Ginger Snaps screenwriter Karen Walton, Broken Mirrors...

Did you know that, even before the cramped quarters of Cube, Canadian director and Quiet Earth fave, Vincenzo Natali, made a short called Elevated which took the concept of claustrophobic thrillers even further? Completed in 1997, the 17 minute film brought Natali and fellow Canadian filmmaker Karen Walton (Ginger Snaps) together to create a tense thriller that took place entirely in the confines of an elevator. More specifically, the film is about two people, Ben and Ellen, who are thrust into adventure when all of a sudden, Hank, the blood covered security man of the building rushes into their elevator, claiming that there's a dangerous alien-like creature in the building. To me, this is the kind of film that should be required viewing for any aspiring filmmaker, because it clearly articulates the secret ingredients to any successful low budget flick. There's great characters but also a screenplay that's ripe with a high concept,...

Justin Chatwin is in talks to star in a feature film adaptation of Michael Turner's cult novel The Pornographer's Poem. Set in Vancouver in the late '70s, The Pornographer's Poem is a dark coming-of-age comedy that centers on a man who discovers the world of pornography by stumbling upon the making of porn shorts. The film will be produced by Bill House of Toronto-based House of Films Inc. and Daniel Iron, in association with Chatwin and his manager, Lainie Stolhanske of Management 360. Karen Walton has adapted the book for the screen.
Genevieve Jolliffe and Andrew Zinnes have set up the spec Absolute Angels at Warner Bros. Pictures, with Jolliffe attached to direct. Mosaic Media's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing. Karen Walton will do a quick rewrite on the project. Angels, described as a female take on 1987's The Lost Boys, centers on a high school outsider who is invited to join the cheerleading squad only to find out the girls are a pack of vampires.

TORONTO -- A TV movie about a rape victim was the big winner Monday night in Toronto at the Gemini Awards, Canada's TV awards. For The Many Trials of Jane Doe, a biopic about police mishandling of a rape case, Jerry Ciccoritti earned a Gemini for best direction, Wendy Crewson grabbed a trophy for best actress in a TV movie, and Karen Walton won for best TV movie writing. With fewer original one-hour Canadian dramas on primetime schedules because of funding shortages, TV movies were the big winners at the Geminis. The best TV movie award went to 100 Days in the Jungle, and Michael Riley earned the Gemini for best performance by an actor in a dramatic program or miniseries for his role in The Interrogation of Michael Crowe. CTV newsroom drama The Eleventh Hour came away with the Gemini for best TV drama, unseating Canadian Broadcasting Corp.'s DaVinci's Inquest, which had won in the category the previous five years.
