Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Despite featuring the most awkward title yet, it’s my pleasure to report that Amityville 1992: It’s About Time is a top-tier entry in the Amityville Horror series.
Thanks primarily to assured direction by Hellbound: Hellraiser 2’s Tony Randel and a wild script from writers Christopher DeFaria and Antonio Toro (based loosely on a book by John G. Jones), the sixth entry in the Amityville series is a genuine delight from top to bottom.
Many of the franchise’s key elements are here: the iconic windows, a widowed character, the dysfunctional family, goopy practical FX, and a new cursed object. Here it’s a clock, which is immediately described by a character as “ugly,” continuing a trend that began with the lamp in The Evil Escapes.

Well, the biggest reason that Encino Man 2 could work is that the main stars, Brendan Fraser, Pauley Shore, and Sean Astin are all ready and willing to get moving on the project, but beyond that, it’s kind of hard to come up with other reasons why it would work. It’s a question of how many others the movie could bring back since getting Sandra Hess back would be nice, and it would be great to get Megan Ward back as well. If you’re not remembering which parts they played, Sandra was Link’s Cave Nug, or girlfriend, that showed up

It does make a person feel old when someone they saw acting in a movie back in the 90s turns 50, doesn’t it? Megan Ward, who a lot of us probably know from various shows and movies, is no longer the young girl that a lot of guys probably had a crush on back in the day, but she’s still in the business and still doing what she cares about as she remains just as vibrant as ever. She’s aged quite well to be fair and she’s continued to show up in TV and in movies throughout her career, but

Released at the height of the straight to video techno-horror phase that rode in on the coat-tails of The Lawnmower Man and also saw the release of films such as Evolver and Brainscan, Arcade was, I think, unfairly overlooked, at least in the UK, at the time due to poor distribution, a lack of big-name stars (unlike Brainscan which had a post-T2 Edward Furlong, the biggest stars in Arcade were A Christmas Story’s Peter Billingsley and St:tng’s John De Lancie), and effects that – even though they were apparently redone after the film was completed – did not compare to other CGI-heavy films at the time.

Some horror fans automatically have a negative connotation attached to franchises with a lot of sequels. Moreover, some have antipathy toward direct to video sequels and make assumptions that because they were not in the theater that they are automatically going to be bad regardless. It was 21 years ago this week that Alien 3 opened in theaters. Since Alien 3 didn’t spawn any music videos, I’m instead forced to go with Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil’s theme song to Encino Man, the other movie that opened on May 22, 1992.
Ah, May 22, 1992: The night I saw a double feature of Alien 3 and Encino Man. I remember being so excited for Alien 3 - then I actually saw it. Yeah, I know there are many of you out there ready to rush to the defense of Alien 3 - save your breath. That’s one you’ll never be able to sell me on. Wanna know how much I disliked Alien 3? I was so let down exiting the theater that I turned right back around, bought a ticket for Encino Man, and ended up enjoying it far more. That’s how bored...

What do you get when producer Charles Band, writer David S. Goyer, and director Albert Pyun decide to do their own horror version of Tron? If you didn’t answer Arcade, then you clearly do not know your Full Movie catalogue.
1993’s Arcade starred grown-up A Christmas Story star Peter Billingsley, Full Moon cutie Megan Ward, and future “Robot Chicken” mastermind Seth Green as teens fighting for their mortal souls after being sucked into a sinister video game created by “Star Trek: The Next Generation” troublemaker John de Lancie.
I distinctly remember Arcade being regularly advertised during Video Zone segments at the end of numerous Full Moon releases of the time and being frustrated because its release was constantly being delayed, reportedly, due to dissatisfaction with the computer effects. I even more distinctly remember watching the movie when it finally came out and... Let’s just say I’ve always...

The second Revenge’s Nolan revealed to Emily that her supposedly-dead mom was alive, our brains went into overdrive. Who should play the Clarke family’s missing link? We came up with a few suggestions… give us yours in the comment section!
Felicity Huffman
The formerly desperate housewife looks like she and James Tupper (who plays Amanda’s dad in flashbacks) could totally be the gene pool from which our vengeance-seeking heroine emerged. And after years of playing Lynette, Huffman would no doubt relish the opportunity to sink her teeth into a role that allowed her to play something more glamorous than a suburban mom! Er, not that there’s anything wrong with that…
Cynthia Watros
Long before she became one of Lost’s tailies or Titus’ good-hearted girlfriend, Watros tore up the daytime screen as Guiding Light’s nutty nurse Annie Dutton, taking home a Lead Actress Emmy for her work on the soap.

Director Albert Pyun, whose ouvre includes such films as The Sword and the Sorceror, Knights, Arcade, Kickboxer 4 and the forthcoming Tales of an Ancient Empire, is currently in the process of re-editing his smash hit cyberpunk movie Nemesis to create what he is calling his “directors cut”, which will apparently have a new opening – featuring Megan Ward, with whom Pyun worked with on Arcade – and an ending which ties more closely in the sequel which was released some three years later.
Says Pyun on his official Facebook page:
Work has started on re-mastering Nemesis into a version closer to what I had intended. Version 2.0 will be different in many ways including story plot line and the backstory on Alex Rain. It will have an entirely different opening scene and an ending closer to what I had intended. It links more smoothly into Nemesis 2. This will be ready possibly by the end of January for shipping.

Thanksgiving may be over, but actor Maurice Benard still has something he’s thankful for: After 18 years playing mob boss Sonny Corinthos Jr. on General Hospital, the show’s writers still deliver new story lines that get him jazzed. “I’m very excited about the stuff I’ve done in the last month, when Sonny and Kate go to Bensonhurst,” says Benard of episodes that kick off today and deal with Sonny’s childhood abuse at the hands of his stepfather. “You know what it is? It’s kind of bringing back the Sonny that used to be. And I think it’s needed.

Before we dive into the first installment of “Now & Then”, I want to just take a few moments to explain exactly what it is. In “Now & Then” movies, both horror and non-horror will be analyzed from the point of view of seeing the film at a younger age and then the point of view of watching it in the present. The movie I have chosen for the first installment is a movie that is very important to me and influenced me immensely growing up the 1996 independent classic Glory Daze from writer/director Rich Wilkes.
Glory Daze is the story of a group of tight knit friends in college who find themselves two days away from graduation. Jack (Ben Affleck) is starting to panic as he starts to contemplate what the future holds for him and begins to worry that the last few years were the high point and everything else...

Forget Transformers! The ultimate retro giant battling robot movie was Stuart Gordon’s Robot Jox (1990 aka Robojox) filmed in Italy with old-school stop motion giant robot battles shot here in the U.S. These rock-em-sock-em style behemoths complete with flamethrowers, lasers, giant rope-saws, and rocket propelled boxing gloves were crude, but their crunching and bashing were a sight to behold in the days before CGI. It was a fairly expensive movie from producer Charles Band’s Empire Productions (which churned out gems like Re-Gordon’s Re-animator and the original Troll) but was poorly marketed and was said to have bankrupted the studio. Robojox, though poorly written and acted, was a lot of fun when I saw it at the theater over 20 years ago, a sort of live-action mecha anime, and it is available in a nice full-screen DVD on the MGM label.

They've also got reviews and give-aways and all types of cool stuff.
In summation, their website is top notch. Check it out.

Durham, N.C. - During lunch a filmmaker tells me that of all the festivals he’s attended with his movies, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the only one he wants to attend as a spectator. He enjoys how the various screens and activities aren’t spread all over the city. There’s a relaxed atmosphere as the festival-goers aren’t hustling hard to get tickets to sold out screenings. It’s a sweet Southern festival in the middle of Tobacco Road. Even the world’s biggest superstar just hangs out with the festival goers inside of hiding behind a wall of security.
Who is the superstar? Elmo! And we have an exclusive chat with him at the end of this column.
The film selection was once more top notch. An ample number of documentaries received their world debut in Durham. There were a few films that had built a buzz at Sundance,...

Women work-out at a gym. That was a conspicuous gym, who'd want to work out displaying themselves to any old pervert or weirdo. Not to mention voyeurism! And it was on the ground floor too, that's just inviting trouble. A man outside watches a woman leave and follows her. A 911 call is made reporting a murder about to occur right now, by what sounds like a man, at first. That voice was too mechanical, emotionless and monotone to be an actual voice. Instead of a dead woman, as we'd expect to have been found, it turns out to be a dead man. He was "beaten, bound and gagged, shot three times - it's about to happen..." Flack (Eddie Cahill) reports the call was made at 11pm by an unidentified caller. Mac (Gary Sinise) comments every Vic of the Prospect Park rapist was found within a mile of where the Db was dumped.

A Db is found in a spring. Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) comments they're all named 'Anthony' and in cement shoes. Ray (Laurence Fishburne) comments on it being a sulphur spring and if bathed in, can provide a beautiful complexion. Brass remarks that the Db's complexion has improved. The Db has an 'L' shaped wound on his head which Ray explains means his head was hit with a pistol. David (David Berman) says the water's nice. Ray believes he was dead when he hit the water or afterwards. Nick (George Eads) thinks it's a body dump. Ray thinks the Pmi was about 4-7 hours and takes a water sample. Just as in last week's episode, Ray, Nick and Brass are called to the Cs together again. Nick spots an oil deposit on the ground, probably from the vehicle that dumped the Db. Also like last episode, Doc Robbins (Robert David Hall) and...

Roswell, N.M. - The aliens have returned! Maybe not returned so much as finally arrived on home video with the release of Dark Skies: The Declassified Complete Series on DVD. Startling enough, the show only lasted a season on NBC in 1996. It gained a large cult with an alternative history of America in the ’60s. “History as we know it is a lie” was the startling series slogan. John Loengard (Eric Close) went from plucky congressional aide to a member of the ultra creepy Majestic 12 run by Frank Bach (J.T. Walsh) to battle the alien menace. An equally bizarre transformation happens to his girlfriend, Kimberly Sayers (Megan Ward). She gets alien abducted and returned. The perky perfect sixties gal goes to dark side. Can he bring her back?

Don't think badly of me when I say that I first thought Dark Skies was going to be a cheap X-Files knockoff. After all, it is a genre show about aliens that premiered right in the middle of the X-Files' run. Look at it this way: it looked like a FlashForward to the X-Files' Lost. And to some extent, that's what it is. After all, it only lasted a season, featured a more initially focused concept, and gained a very devout cult following that tried its best to save the show. Sounds familiar, right?
Nineties children like myself will probably remember a book series called Animorphs by K.A. Applegate. I only drop that reference because it's perhaps the best comparison to the plot of Dark Skies. If you drop the animal-transformation gimmicks, you've got an extremely dark story of a covert alien invasion carried out by parasites who enter your head and take over.

While Universal's banking on Ouija boards to be the perfect fodder for a ghost film, there's another flick that's totally beating them to the punch -- the new Lou Diamond Philips (yes, he's still making movies) vehicle, The Invited.
Philips stars alongside Megan Ward and Pam Grier in Ryan McKinney's flick which tells the tale of a young married couple who are pregnant with their first child that move into their turn-of-the-century home where they discover that a great evil has resided for nearly a century, unleashed by a previous occupant.
And yes, of course it's inspired by actual events. Isn't everything nowadays? Check out the early sales art and the trailer below.

The Ouija board is makin' a comeback. In our second Ouija-related story of the day (check out the first one here ), we have the trailer for The Invited (no, not a prequel or sequel to The Uninvited ). Ryan McKinney's film tells of a young married couple who are pregnant with their first child move into their turn-of-the-century home where they discover that a great evil has resided for nearly a century, unleashed by a previous occupant. Megan Ward stars, but look for Pam Grier and Lou Diamond Phillips as well.

Why are we interested in The Invited? Well, not only does Ryan McKinney's supernatural thriller mark the triumphant return of the evil ouija board - a device I thought long since deserted by the horror genre - it also has one of the strangest cast line-ups we've seen in a while. Lou Diamond Phillips, Pam Grier and Megan Ward (who I last saw in that MTV cockroach musical thing, Joe's Apartment).
The trailer starts off kind of slowly, but amps up the tension quickly by showcasing some great sepia-toned shots of the 20s, blood soaked possessions and even quick glimpses of a monster. The last shot in particular, which is reminiscent of Poltergeist, is especially creepy.
