Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

Look through the list of this year’s Oscar nominees in the animated feature category and you’ll find each hero’s journey hinges on the same thing — family. They’re either struggling to break free, trying to find their place in the world or looking back on a mystery. In every case, it’s messy.
Most of the filmmakers leaned into their own experiences with family and mined tidbits for their films. The result is movies that hits specific notes but play well for larger audiences who see themselves in the families on screen.
“One of the goals of the movie is to get kids and parents to kind of see each other and see the world through each other’s perspectives,” says Michael Rianda, helmer of “The Mitchells vs. the Machines.”

As “Luca” director Enrico Casarosa said, “It’s so hard to make these movies, especially through the pandemic, so I think everyone in the 2021 batch of movies should be so proud.” Yes they should.

While the story of Luca is deeply rooted in Casarosa’s childhood, the theme of friendship was universal for the everyone working on the film. “I think that we all related to those friends that make that difference in your life,” Warren said. “For me, it was a friend where you just connect over things and you laugh at each other’s jokes and it’s that beginning of growing up and building confidence and how meaningful that is to all of us.”

The Producers Guild of America announced its nominations for the motion picture and television categories for the upcoming 33rd PGA Awards, and it was a good day for the streamers (once again).
Netflix ruled the film side with three films landing in the field of 10 nominees: “Don’t Look Up” from Adam McKay, “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Warner Bros. captured two nods from its slate: “Dune” from Denis Villeneuve and “King Richard” from Reinaldo Marcus Green.
At the best possible moment with Oscar voting opening today, Amazon Studios’ “Being the Ricardos” from Aaron Sorkin snagged one of the coveted spots, which helps its best picture chances considerably.
Some of the omissions were pronounced, most notably Apple Original Films’ “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen missing out on a nod, even though the heartwarming “Coda” made it into the lineup.

The busiest single day of film nominations in many years kicked off on Thursday with the Producers Guild of America announcing its nominees for the best-produced films of 2021, a slate of films that ranged from indies like “Belfast” and “Coda” to the bigger budget extravaganzas “Dune” and “West Side Story.”
Also on the list: “Being the Ricardos,” “Don’t Look Up,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
Conspicuously missing from the PGA’s list were the Covid-wracked year’s biggest blockbuster, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” as well as “Nightmare Alley,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “House of Gucci.”

A tsunami of buzz and Oscar-telling indicators drop on Thursday, with the major guilds announcing award nominations. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and American Cinema Editors (Ace Eddies) all serve as critical barometers for the Academy Awards, especially in the race for best picture.
DGA has averaged four of their five nominees landing in the Oscars’ best director category, including last year with Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) getting bumped for Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”). The first-time directors’ category, with the exception of Jordan Peele for “Get Out” (2017), has gone on to get a nod at the Academy.
The PGA always provides some big blockbusters and Academy flare, which bodes well for either “No Time to Die” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The WGA has a lot of ineligibilities that won’t provide a strong enough indicator for the screenplay categories.

At the Media Access Awards on Wednesday, honoree Marlee Matlin summed up the mood by saying that when she came to Los Angeles in 1985, “words like equality and access were so far outside the mainstream of Hollywood, I had to make noise.” Receiving the Maa’s lifetime achievement award “pushes me to be even louder.”
The annual awards have long honored film and TV shows that offer positive portrayals of disabled people. Other honorees, which were announced in advance, included Selma Blair, Troy Kotsur, John Krasinski, Jamie Nieto, Ryan O’Connell, “Luca” producer Andrea Warren and Zeno Mountain Farm.
The Apple film “Coda” was the only winner of multiple awards, with Matlin, her co-star Troy Kotsur and the film’s casting directors Deborah Aquila, Tricia Wood and Lisa Zagoria honored. For Pixar director Enrico Casarosa, “Luca” (streaming June 18 on Disney+) became an opportunity to explore the topical theme of inclusion in his 2D-inspired bromance between two sea monsters on the Italian Riviera. The 13-year-old Luca and best friend, Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer), magically turn human on land and share an enchanting summer eating pasta, riding Vespa scooters, and diving off the rugged cliffs into the turquoise water, soaking up the beauty of the pastel-tinted seaside town. But they must hide their secret identities from the townspeople who believe sea monsters are dangerous creatures.
“It was a wonderful journey finding that theme and how it related to friendship,” Casarosa said. “From day one, I could tell there was something interesting about having a kid that age with this secret — the fact that he can’t show himself.”
Pixar’s chief creative officer, Pete Docter, even told Casarosa how much the theme personally resonated with him.

Disney Pixar’s latest feel-good coming-of-age animation about remembering the people who shaped us along the way. It speaks to the younger generation only the way Pixar can, with sensitivity and a whole lot of fun. With the film’s release on Disney+ from June the 18th some of the animation’s voice cast and filmmakers came together for a recent press conference to convey how the film was brought together.
With the film set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera over one glorious summer in the late 1950s-early 1960s. We meet sea creature Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) as his curiosity towards humans alongside his friendship with the mischievous Alberto (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer) gives him his own sense of freedom and identity. As described by director Enrico Casarosa “It’s a love letter to the summers of our youth—those formative years when you’re finding yourself.

Luca is the name of the next animated feature film from Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios, directed and conceived by animator and artist Enrico Casarosa. Working at Pixar since 2002 as a story artist in films like Cars, Up, Coco, and Ratatouille, Casarosa directed the 2012 short La Luna before making his feature directorial debut this year with Luca—an original fantasy based partially on Casarosa’s boyhood in Genoa, Italy.
Telling the tale of two teenage sea monsters named Luca and Alberto who spend a summer disguised as humans and enjoying life on land in an Italian seaside village, Luca represents two major firsts for Pixar: It is the first feature in the studio’s decades-long history to take place specifically in Italy and it is, for all intents and purposes, the first Pixar film to be made almost completely at home.

Even charming sea monsters need to come of age sometime: such is the cute theme behind Enrico Casarosa’s feature directorial debut “Luca.” Following the success of his Oscar-nominated “La Luna” short, Casarosa has again teamed up with Pixar for an eye-popping new vision of young life in Italy. Set during an unforgettable summer on the Italian Riviera, the latest from Pixar centers on the bond between the titular 13-year-old protagonist (voiced by “Wonder” star Jacob Tremblay) and his best friend, Alberto (voiced by “Shazam’s” Jack Dylan Grazer).
And while that might sound like fertile ground for a Pixar feature, “Luca” comes with a twist: both of the boys are sea monsters who become human on land, where they share scooter rides, swimming, pasta, and gelato, while hiding their secret. As Casarosa recently told IndieWire, the film was inspired by his own coming of age and best pal. “‘Luca’ was about my best friend,...

Pixar dropped the teaser trailer for “Luca,” the directorial feature debut of Enrico Casarosa (the Oscar-nominated “La Luna” short). It’s about an unforgettable summer on the Italian Riviera with the titular 13-year-old protagonist (voiced by “Wonder” star Jacob Tremblay) and his best friend, Alberto (voiced by “Shazam’s” Jack Dylan Grazer) — a sea monster. When Alberto becomes human on land, they’re able to share scooter rides, swimming, pasta, and Gelato.
Andrea Warren produces and the voice cast also includes Maya Rudolph; Emma Berman; Marco Barricelli; and Jim Gaffigan.
“Luca” continues Casarosa’s semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age saga that began with “La Luna” (also set in his seaside town before setting off on a lunar adventure). Like the short, “Luca” contains a colorful, handmade aesthetic. “I thought back to very important relationships in my life,” Casarosa told IndieWire. “‘La Luna’ was all about growing up with my dad and my grandfather,...

Pixar continues its embrace of inclusion and diversity by putting artists behind the camera. The Italian coming-of-age animated feature, “Luca,” from Enrico Casarosa (the Oscar-nominated “La Luna” short), is scheduled for release June 18, 2021. Produced by Andrea Warren, “Luca” concerns a young boy’s unforgettable summer on the Italian Riviera with his secret best friend — a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface — who share scooter rides, swimming, pasta, and Gelato.
“This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship,” said Casarosa in a statement. “Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in ‘Luca.’ So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside,...
