Love & Jane by David Weaver hints towards the escapist nature of literature, and I do not mean this as a bad thing. Escapism, as I believe it to be, is an innate facet of our human nature. A manifestation of our self-preservationist instincts, ‘escapism,’ despite the negative connotations people attach to it, has been the very reason why art came into the picture. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I do think that the escapist nature of mankind is what more or less birthed creativity. Perhaps David Weaver tried to address the character’s escapist nature in Love & Jane. Jane Austen’s works are considered quite intellectual today, but back in the hyper-conservative British Regency era, they served as an escape for women, hinting at equal rights for women and satirizing the patriarchal status quo. While not inherently a feminist, Jane’s work did walk the line between realism and escapism,...

Lifetime Expands ‘Ripped From The Headlines’ Slate with Five Movies Inspired by Ann Rule (Exclusive)
Lifetime has greenlit five new movies for its “Ripped from the Headlines” slate, all from best-selling true crime author Ann Rule, Variety has learned exclusively. Additionally, Ashley Williams and Robin Givens will make their small-screen directorial debuts with two of these films.
These five films come from Rule’s books “Danger in the Dorm,” “Mortan Danger,” “Practice to Deceive,” “Bitter Harvest” and “Empty Promises” and are being prepped for a summer launch. As part of Lifetime’s Broader Focus Initiative, four out of the five directors of these films are women, and three out of the five films were written by women.
“Bitter Harvest” tells the story of a brilliant doctor and mother who had the epitome of a picture perfect life with three children, an adoring husband and a beautiful house in an opulent neighborhood — but behind the curtain was a rocky marriage that takes a terrible turn and leaves her family in ruin.

Thanks to its simultaneous theatrical debut with The Avengers, the release of David Weaver's The Samaritan overseas under the name of Fury understandably caused a little bit of confusion. But no, The Samaritan is not a standalone movie for Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury; instead, fans of South Korean cinema will likely notice a very different influence on the film’s story, thanks to its borrowing of a major plot element from one of South Korea’s most well known films here in the states. Along with that, we get a subpar con film with Samuel L. Jackson at its center, and his performance is just enough to make this otherwise derivative and tiresome film watchable.

Last fall, IFC Films acquired stateside rights to this Samuel L. Jackson starrer - the David Weaver-directed neo noir thriller titled The Samaritan, which co-stars Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga and Brit Tom Wilkinson. Shot in Toronto and Rio De Janeiro, with the combined financial backing of both a UK-based production house, Quickfire Films, and the Canadian state film fund, Samuel L. Jackson plays a character named Foley, described as “a grifter trying to escape from his past having spent 20 years in prison. Every actor dreams of playing roles that showcase a wide range, but few have the opportunity Luke Kirby is enjoying. Currently in theaters luring ex-con Samuel L. Jackson back into a life of crime in the action-thriller "The Samaritan," the Canadian actor can also be seen as a sensitive artist romancing a married Michelle Williams in "Take This Waltz," premiering May 25 on Video on Demand prior to a June theatrical release. The roles are so wildly contrasting, it's jarring to realize they're played by the same person. As it turns out, the experiences of making each film were also polar opposites. Kirby describes "The Samaritan" as a "jump on board" situation. He had just read the script when he was asked to fly to Toronto to meet director David Weaver for an audition. Six days later, he found himself on set going head-to-head with Jackson. "It was sudden but very.

Dictators, hitmen, and navy officers – oh my! It’s a big weekend for the dudes, the professional advantages mentioned above notwithstanding, and we can expect screens clogged with manly men doing male things. Even the invention of a sex toy (by a man, duh) and male grooming get sweet turns in the theaters. If only the powerful sight of pregnant women was enough to combat the male-dominated market. Ah well, perhaps another weekend. Let’s jump into the testosterone-fueled fray, shall we?

Samuel L. Jackson finally gets to put Nick Fury aside and play a serious, well-rounded character in The Samaritan, a new film noir. The experience of watching Jackson actually act is the primary pleasure to be gleaned from David Weaver’s movie, which places the star in a narrative that’s so grim and hopeless it’s no fun at all. Experienced con artist Foley (Jackson) leaves prison after serving 25 years for the murder of his partner. He just wants to be left alone, but alas, that’s not to be. His partner’s embittered son Ethan (Luke Kirby) has orchestrated a gigantic snare aimed at forcing Foley to take part in an ambitious, risky con targeting crime kingpin/oenophile Xavier (Tom Wilkinson). Foley spends most of the movie angrily resisting Ethan’s overtures, engaging in repeated violent confrontations. But his antagonist, played with sheer smarminess by Kirby, has a big trump card: a pretty young woman...

Samuel L. Jackson is once again a name on the lips of America after his rousing turn as Commander Nick Fury in Joss Whedon’s unyielding summer blockbuster The Avengers. This is definitely a good thing, since we’ve all been huge fans of Sammy L. down at the Complex since we were mere boys. And now riding the crest of this wave of Avengers goodness is another film starring Jackson, The Samaritan.
The Samaritan is about former con-man Foley (Jackson) who gets out of prison after twenty years, ready to go straight. There’s a distinct air of cynicism around this latest Samuel L. Jackson-starring thriller from the outset; after all, why else would its international title be changed from The Samaritan to Fury other than to try and milk a quick-buck off of Jackson’s similarly-monikered Nick Fury character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Probably hoping audiences will mistakenly assume this to be a comic book spin-off, the cynically-titled Fury is a derivative, low-energy slog pretty much from start to finish.
It would be a spoiler to say which electrifying Korean thriller Fury lifts liberally from, but viewers will probably be able to guess within a matter of minutes. Jackson plays Foley, a man released from prison after a twenty-five year stint. He is a relic of a gangster; most of his friends are dead or settled out of the business, and Foley is desperate to...

Marley (15)
(Kevin Macdonald, 2012, Us/UK) 145 mins
Authoritative to the point of exhausting, Macdonald's documentary compiles an awesome amount of footage, photos, interviews, etc – but then it's a big subject. Whether you really get to the man beyond the legend is debatable (this was made with Marley family backing), but there's much here you've never seen, from Bob's Rasta roots to his kick-around in London's Battersea Park.
Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (12A)
(Lasse Hallström, 2012, UK) Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt. 106 mins
An incongruous setting for a mushy fish-out-of-water romcom, with Blunt and her sheikh boss lured by McGregor's tackle.
Elles (18)
(Malgorzata Szumowska, 2011, Fra/Pol/Ger) Juliette Binoche, Anaïs Demoustier. 99 mins
Empowerment and eroticism mix uneasily when Binoche's enquiries into student prostitution affect her own life.
Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (18)

Rave-era yarn that's 15 years too late to be the Trainspotting of Mdma it wants to be.

★★★☆☆ Next week, Samuel L. Jackson will be hitting UK screens as Nick Fury in Marvel's Avengers Assemble (2012), to which many minds may wander when they learn that he is also starring this week in Fury (The Samaritan, 2012). This is no Marvel spin-off however; Jackson stars as Foley, an ex-con eager for redemption in this Canadian thriller directed and co-written by David Weaver. Fury offers up an intriguing examination of its issues, but all too often lacks the panache that could have made it truly memorable.

It's difficult to discuss "The Samaritan" without revealing the noted plot turn nearly halfway through, but consider this an attempt. The Canadian thriller, currently available on VOD, concerns an ex-con named Foley. Foley's lost twenty five years in prison after murdering his partner, a decision borne out of Foley regretfully picking his own poison in a life-or-death situation. Living with the memory of killing his close associate and the idea that he essentally gave up a quarter of a century to live, Foley is unstuck in time, visiting his old stomping grounds the way the guilty frequent graveyards.
Despite a request to ignore any former associates and a desire to avoid unlawful situations, Foley is approached by the shifty Ethan. With a jacket full of drugs, a pocket flush with cash, and a smooth, inky pompadour, Ethan weasels his way into a conversation with Foley, coyly suggesting he knows all about Foley's life.

But his past is proving to be a stubborn companion: Ethan (Luke Kirby), the son of his former partner, has an ingenious plan and he wants Foley in. The Samaritan is one of two upcoming lower-budget crime-thrillers starring Samuel L. Jackson. We got our first trailer and poster for Meeting Evil earlier this month, which pits Jackson opposite Luke Wilson, and now we have the trailer and poster debut for Jackson’s latest offering, The Samaritan.
Directed and co-written by David Weaver, the film also stars Luke Kirby (the upcoming Take This Waltz) as Jackson’s son, Ruth Negga (Breakfast on Pluto), and the great Tom Wilkinson (RocknRolla).

Here's an official trailer for the new Samuel L. Jackson noir thriller called The Samaritan. In the film Jackson plays a man named "Foley, a grifter trying to escape from his past having spent 20 years in prison. But he gets ensnared in the plans of a young protege and it becomes all too clear to Foley that some wrongs can never be made right." The movie was directed by David Weaver, and also stars Tom Wilkinson, Luke Kirby and Ruth Negga.
I enjoy watching Jackson in the movies he makes, and this looks like it could be a cool heist thriller. IFC Films will release the movie in a limited amount of theaters on May 16th, 2012. Check out the trailer below and tell us if it interests you or not!

"Nothing changes unless you make it change." IFC Films has debuted the official trailer today via Yahoo for The Samaritan, a new dramatic thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson as a former grifter fresh out of prison, looking to take his life on a new path. But he meets another young woman and things get a bit out of hand when he gets in with the wrong guy. The cast includes Luke Kirby, Ruth Negga, Tom Wilkinson, Aaron Poole and Martha Burns. This trailer reveals a big plot twist, unnecessarily I'd say, and makes it almost look like The Game meets Death Sentence. They show too much, but I'll be damned if I'm not intrigued anyway. In spite of his obvious superstar status, Samuel L. Jackson has never been afraid of slumming it with a small budget independent flick, especially if the script is in tune with the actor’s somewhat quirky sensibilities. His next film is indicative of these less than avaricious tendencies as he was confirmed recently to be starring in The Samaritan, an Indie thriller co-written and directed by long-time television film maker David Weaver.
This film now appears to be gaining momentum as it was confirmed by Variety yesterday that esteemed English actor Tom Wilkinson has joined the cast.
Wilkinson is exactly the sort of name one might expect from Jackson’s independent productions: not hugely bankable, but still an outstanding reputation in dramatic circles both on stage and screen.
