Following its critically acclaimed fourth season, which has been praised as “the best-written show on all of television” and “superior sci-fi,” Apple TV+ announced that its hit, award-winning space drama series “For All Mankind” has landed a renewal for season five. Additionally, Apple TV+ and “For All Mankind” creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi will expand the “For All Mankind” universe with a brand-new spinoff series, “Star City,” which will be showrun by Nedivi and Wolpert. Both series are produced for Apple TV+ by Sony Pictures Television.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of ‘For All Mankind,’” said executive producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi. “The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race.

“For All Mankind” has been renewed for Season 5 at Apple TV+. In addition, Variety has learned the streamer has ordered a spinoff series focusing on the Soviet space program.
The spinoff is currently titled “Star City” and hails from “For All Mankind” creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi. Nedivi and Wolpert will serve as showrunners. The show will return to the beginning of “For All Mankind’s” alternative timeline, in which the Soviets are the first to reach the moon. But the show will then “explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward,” per the official logline.

Apple TV+ isn’t done exploring the depths of space.
The streamer has renewed its drama series For All Mankind for Season 5. Additionally, Apple TV+ has given the green light to a spinoff series titled Star City, also from creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.
Apple is billing Star City is “a propulsive paranoid thriller” which will explore a key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, it will explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

In 1966, Gene Roddenberry and his co-creators gave the world Star Trek, an adventure series that imagined humanity overcoming its racist and sexist and class divisions, which inaugurated a new age of exploration. Corny? Sure. Imperfect? Of course. But that fundamental optimism remains a key aspect of Star Trek, presenting a challenge to those future creators tasked with keeping the franchise alive beyond the years of its birth.
That doesn’t mean the optimism can’t be challenged or re-contextualized. Indeed, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did exactly that, and many put that series at the top of their franchise rankings. But Deep Space Nine also introduced Section 31, a black ops organization within Starfleet and the darkest alternative to Star Trek optimism this side of the Terran Empire.
Sadly, later Trek creators have jumped onto the Section 31 concept, resulting in darker, much more pessimistic (and paranoid) stories that forget the best...

Are you a science nerd who's become disheartened by our collective inability as a species to work together towards a common goal, to put ego and wealth and politics aside, and simply explore the cosmos for the betterment of our species? If you haven't been following along already, allow me to point you in the direction of "For All Mankind." I should clarify, this isn't the show to watch if you're looking for an escape from all the cynicism we've been seeing in our news headlines for the better part of the 21st Century. Rather, the Apple TV+ series shines a direct light on all our missteps through an alternate-history lens -- one in which the Russians won the space race by landing a man on the moon back in the 1960s, kicking off an even more intense game of one-upmanship between the world's superpowers locked in an eternal Cold War.

Prior to creating "Star Trek," Gene Roddenberry had spent a decade as a TV journeyman, writing for multiple hit shows of the day including "Highway Patrol," "I Led 3 Lives," "Dr. Kildare," and 24 episodes of "Have Gun – Will Travel." He became adept at multiple genres and had a very good sense of how TV trends flowed by the time he went to pitch "Star Trek." Famously, Roddenberry pitched his sci-fi show as "Wagon Train to the Stars," referring to the massive hit Western that debuted in 1957 and ran until 1965. That notorious pitch has worked its way into known Trek lore and can be heard quoted by good Trekkies everywhere. These days, "Star Trek" is far more popular than "Wagon Train" ever was.

Wow, a ‘new’ Sam Peckinpah western! While we await the rumored Blu-ray of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid to surface (or was Alex Cox misinformed?), correspondent Darren Gross has come across a watchable web encoding of a Peckinpah TV drama that seems to be more or less ‘lost.’ Good star performances and intense characterizations prove once again that Peckinpah could deliver superior dramatics. The home video companies should do some investigating — there’s a market out there for this one.

Rami Malek has been snagged to take on the role of the iconic comedy silent movie star Buster Keaton in a limited series from Warner Bros Television.
Known for his deadpan expression, actor-director Keaton starred in such movies as ‘The Playhouse,’ ‘Cops,’ ‘The Electric House,’ ‘Sherlock Jr’ and ‘The General’ among several others; the latter is considered to be his masterpiece. Born into a vaudeville family, Keaton’s career waned after he inked with MGM and lost his artistic independence. His wife divorced him, and he became an alcoholic. His career rebounded in the 1940s; he remarried and earned an Academy Honorary Award in 1959.

Matt Reeves is swapping Batman for Buster Keaton.
The “Batman” director is set to helm a limited series based on the life of actor Buster Keaton, with Rami Malek transforming into the silent film star. Reeves will also produce the series through his 6th and Idaho Productions production banner under an overall deal at Warner Bros. TV.
Malek and David Weddle are confirmed to also produce; Ted Cohen is in talks to serve as executive producer and writer. The upcoming series is expected to use James Curtis’ biography “Buster Keaton: A Filmmaker’s Life” as source material as Warner Bros. is negotiating the rights for the 2022 book.
Vaudeville actor Keaton made his onscreen debut in silent comedy “The Butcher Boy” and went on to collaborate with Douglas Fairbanks, Joseph M. Schenck, and Edward F. Cline, among others. Keaton eventually formed an eponymous production company and began directing films like “Sherlock Jr.

Finally, we have some news on that Matt Reeves project for Warner Brothers. No, wait, not that one. Last week, Reeves did reveal that he's working on a script for the sequel to "The Batman," but news has just broken about a different -- albeit still star-studded -- project the filmmaker has lined up with the studio. What's more, "Mr. Robot" star and Oscar-winner Rami Malek is apparently in talks to play the lead role.

“For All Mankind,” Apple TV+’s popular alternative-history space drama series, was renewed Friday for a fourth season, it was revealed at Comic-Con. The news comes a little over a month after Season 3’s premiere.
“Since 1969, #ForAllMankind has journeyed from Earth to the Moon to Mars. The adventure will continue on Apple TV+,” the streamer’s Twitter account wrote.
In one giant leap for the series, “For All Mankind” has also toppled its streaming counterpart “Ted Lasso” as Apple TV+’s most in-demand show. Co-created by “Outlander’s” Ronald D. Moore as well as Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert, “For All Mankind” imagines a world where the global space race never ended, and the Soviets had placed the first human on the moon instead. Season 3 raced ahead in time to the early ’90s, with NASA, the Ussr and an unexpected new player within the private sector setting their sights on sending astronauts to Mars.

“For all Mankind” returns for its third season of 10 episodes on Apple TV+ on June 10, which sees NASA scrambling to get its astronauts to Mars before the Russians and the West Germans in the trailer shared by Apple TV+ on Monday.
The previous two seasons took us from 1969’s historic moon landing to the late ’80s. The drama is now set in the early ’90s, with a TV news desk using a background of the still-standing World Trade Center towers to anchor us firmly in the past.
In the trailer — set to Soundgarden’s 1994 grunge hit “Black Hole Sun” — Joel Kinnaman’s character Edward Baldwin is concerned about the survival of his crew and there are doubts whether they can be supplied with adequate water.
We also meet new character Dev Ayesa ( Edi Gathegi), an advocate for private citizens in space, just a few decades before the 21st century billionaire space race.

“For All Mankind” will return for its third season on June 10, Apple TV Plus announced Monday.
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, the critically-acclaimed science fiction drama imagines an alternate history where Russia beat the United States in putting a man on the moon first. As a result of this historical divergence, the space race between the two countries never ends, leading to a world where both nations have advanced moon colonies staffed 24/7 and the Cold War has led to much quicker technological advances. The series focuses on the exploits of the astronauts and staff of NASA in this alternate universe, delving into both their professional and personal lives.
The first two seasons of “For All Mankind” covered a span of almost two decades, starting in 1969 and ending in the late ’80s. Season 3 again jumps ahead into the early ’90s, as the space race expands to the exploration of Mars.

Apple has launched its first augmented-reality app for an original Apple TV Plus series, “For All Mankind,” taking fans back to 1980 in a nostalgia trip to promote the upcoming Season 2 premiere of the alternative-history space drama.
The free “For All Mankind: Time Capsule” app lets users explore artifacts in the decade that elapses between the first and second seasons of the show — to reveal memories from the perspective of Danny Stevens, son of NASA astronaut couple Gordo and Tracy Stevens. The show, from Ronald D. Moore, imagines what would have happened if the space race between the U.S. and the Ussr had never ended.
Apple released the app ahead of the premiere of Season 2 of “For All Mankind,” set to debut globally with the first episode on Feb. 19 followed by a weekly release schedule for the remaining nine episodes.

Gonzalo “Chalo” Gonzalez-Rubio died March 20 at Verdugo Hospital in Glendale of complications from a bacterial infection. He was 95.
The close associate of Sam Peckinpah worked as a prop master and graduated to film roles, including in 2006’s Sundance award-winning “Quinceanera.”
Producer Katy Haber, a Peckinpah associate from 1970 to 1977 used a military term to say: “Wherever Sam was, so was Chalo. Chalo had Sam’s 6 as they say.”
David Weddle, author of “If They Move… Kill ‘Em! The Life and Times of Sam Peckinpah,” writes: “Chalo Gonzalez played a pivotal role in the making of an American masterpiece, ‘The Wild Bunch.’ He was involved in all aspects of the production and was trusted implicitly by the film’s director, Sam Peckinpah. It was Chalo who advocated that the movie should be shot in Parras, Mexico, near the sites of several pivotal battles of the Mexican Revolution. This was one of the...

In 1969, the film’s violent cynicism came as a shock to the system and now, it seems to have aged disturbingly well
Present day audiences remember Sam Peckinpah’s off-the-wall western The Wild Bunch for its blood, but no less shocking is the film’s moral carnage. Two orgies of bullets bookend the adventure of an outlaw gang on the Mexican border, setting a new standard for the depiction of violence in its day that persists as dizzyingly intense now, 50 years out from the initial release in 1969. Rapid-fire cutting, whiplash zooms and tricks with repetition could combine to dilate a single moment in time and make gunfire into a symphony of wanton destruction. All the glorious slow-motion shots of smoking barrels and spurting entry wounds had been mounted for a loftier purpose than base titillation, however. As stated in David Weddle’s Peckinpah biography If They Move … Kill ’Em!, the film-maker himself found it disturbing,...

Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.
The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”
It is signed by 95 members of both WGA West and WGA East.

Sam Peckinpah was a fine director of actors when the material was right, and his first collaboration with Steve McQueen is an shaded character study about a rodeo family dealing with changing times. Joe Don Baker and Ben Johnson shine, but the movie belongs to Ida Lupino and Robert Preston.

I suppose there were plenty of successful rodeo-themed westerns back in the day, perhaps the kind interrupted by a cowboy song every ten minutes or so.

Easily the most mellow of the films of Sam Peckinpah, this relatively gentle western fable sees Jason Robards discovering water where it ain’t, and establishing his private little way station paradise, complete with lover Stella Stevens and eccentric preacher David Warner. Some of the slapstick is sticky but the sexist bawdy humor is too cute to offend . . . and Peckinpah-phobes will be surprised to learn that the movie is in part a musical.
