Inaccurately titled horror film The Unfamiliar purees together an assortment of tired tropes with just enough originality and admirable craftsmanship to make 89 minutes of jump scares and twists visible from outer space reasonably bearable. Its first move is to make us wonder whether main protagonist Izzy (Jemima West), a British army doctor just home from Afghanistan, is really picking up on weird supernatural shenanigans in her rural home or suffering from acute post-traumatic stress disorder. Something definitely doesn’t seem right with her husband Ethan (Christopher Dane) who has suddenly shifted away from studying Polynesian totems (there’s a particularly scary looking one in the baby’s bedroom) in favour of writing children’s fiction. Meanwhile, her pre-adolescent son (Harry McMillan-Hunt) seems to be hiding secrets, and her adolescent daughter (Rebecca Hanssen) is acting just like,...

Oxford's finest, DC Morse, is back where he belongs in Endeavour's solid series 3 opening episode...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 Ride
Endeavour’s second series ended its run back in April 2014, leaving us desperate to find out how the events of its final episode would be resolved. We last saw the young Endeavour Morse in prison, falsely accused of the murder of Chief Constable Standish. His mentor, Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, was at death’s door after his shooting by the real killer, corrupt Assistant Chief Constable Deare. Would Morse be freed, and would Thursday survive the attack? The first of those questions wasn’t too hard to answer for long-time fans of the future Inspector Morse, but the second was considerably more troubling.
Ride begins in summer 1967, a year after the events of series two. It’s a relief to find Thursday alive and back on duty,...

In light of the corruption scandal engulfing FIFA in the past 48 hours, it's perhaps easy to forget that the very existence of a such a group was at one time incredibly far-fetched. Now the organization tells their own story in the FIFA financed "United Passions," and today we have an exclusive clip from the film. Co-written and directed by Frédéric Auburtin ("Special Correspondents"), and starring Fisher Stevens, Thomas Kretschmann, Tim Roth, Sam Neill, Jemima West, Richard Gillane and Gérard Depardieu, the movie chronicles how FIFA and the World Cup came to be. But as you'll see in the scene below, getting a continent of soccer playing nations to agree to the same rules was no easy feat. Nor was convincing them that the sport was one that would become the most popular the world has ever seen. "United Passions" opens on June 5th. Watch below.

The French aren't afraid of a little nudity -- so trust us, you don't want to watch this strange new clip at work, which is Nsfw from minute one. Set in a Parisian brothel circa 1871, the preview shows (from a variety of angles) a young woman and her client, a decidedly older gentlemen who appears to be a General, making passionate love. We are then led into a bustling brothel teeming with guests and prostitutes. A young man is pulled into the fray by his father, who requires his son to "prove his manhood." The reluctant boy is a poet, and more interested in looking at paintings on the wall than at the women themselves; but as one of the hookers assures them, "the girls love a poet." Originally a drama on Canal Plus that premiered in 2010, in 2012 HBO picked up the remake rights to "Maison Close," which follows three...

Music Box Films has scooped up Us and Canadian rights to the first two seasons of sumptuous bodice-ripping drama "Maison Close," the French TV series set in a 19th century Parisian bordello, created by Jacques Ouaniche and a hit on Canal Plus. Here's the official synopsis:Jemima West, star of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, leads a cast of gorgeous characters trapped by circumstance and their societies limited options, in this dark, riveting exploration of desire and power. By turns both erotic and political, Maison Close re-imagines age-old themes—and the world’s oldest profession—in revolutionary ways that “would make even a veteran of the 50 Shades of Grey series blush.” (The Times) In late 2012, it was announced that HBO took North American rights to the series, and had an English-language remake in the works. The English-language picture captures the history of the 110-year-old International Federation of Association Football through the intertwining stories of Rimet, long-serving Brazilian FIFA president Joao Havelange and Swiss Sepp Blatter who is currently at the helm of the organisation.
Sam Neill plays Havelange and Tim Roth plays Blatter.
“We picked up the project because we think it will appeal to a large and wide audience… not just hardcore football fans. The film tells the human story behind this huge world body through the lives of these three passionate, emblematic figures,” said TF1 International sales chief Sabine Chemaly.

New Mortal Instruments movie delivered lots of great action, drama & more. Screen Gems (Sony) released their new action flick, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was ok. It offered a lot of great action scenes and cool special effects, along with a ton of drama. However, there were parts that were quite slow and boring. And the storyline was a bit hard to follow to say the very least. It stars: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Lena Headey, Kevin Durand, Aidan Turner, Jemima West, Godfrey Gao, Cch Pounder, Jared Harris, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The new flick is apparently based on a worldwide best-selling book series, and revolved around character,Clary Fray (Lily Collins}, who is a seemingly ordinary teenager in New York City. After a series of strange events ,suddenly went down, Clary...

There is most certainly an audience for the film "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," fans of the six (planned) novels about demons, supernatural demon fighters, vampires, werewolves, witches and warlocks.
They'll thrill to all the endless litany of runes, talismans, history and "rules" of this world of shadow-hunters descended from an angel that showed up to help crusading knights a thousand years ago. They'll eagerly await the brief, throw-away visit to the "City of Bones" (a cemetery) of the title.
And if you love exposition and shapely if bland young actors in leather, skinny jeans, knee boots, Goth cocktail dresses and heavy eye makeup, this may be the movie for you.
Lily Collins is Clary, the birthday girl whose mother (Lena Headey of "300") never told her about her heritage, why she keeps seeing signs and people with great hair stalking and stabbing demons in nightclubs and what not. Clary,...

Familiarity breeds contempt for some and comfort for others. The very reason one may be affected by something may be the same reason someone else fails to connect, rejecting what they see as a slavish imitation of what’s come before. This phenomenon, applied to almost anything that’s become old-hat in popular culture, may explain why I’m offering up dual reviews for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Since author Cassandra Clare obviously believes her Ya fantasy saga important enough to receive two titles, I feel sufficiently encouraged in this direction.
In the film, Clare’s hero Clary Fray wakes up one day to learn she has a second sight that can reveal demons, vampires and werewolves. Before you can shout “female Constantine”, she’s in the path of darkly handsome heart-throb Angel—er, Jace—who’s part of a society of celestially sired humans called Shadowhunters.

Movie execs are clamouring like drooling zombies to get a hold of 'the next Twilight'. Most recently, Beautiful Creatures and The Host have both failed in that regard. Now, attention turns to an adaptation of Cassandra Clare's best-selling book series Mortal Instruments, where Lily Collins throws off her Mirror Mirror good girl image to do battle with demons.
"Why do I have to dress like a hooker?" she asks after coming to terms with the fact that she, Clary Fray, isn't just a regular kid from New York; she's a 'Shadowhunter', a supreme being gifted with special powers to combat horrible gobliny things. It's a good question, but this is a film held together by hair wax, leather and bondage straps rather than coherent storytelling.

Evan Dickson caught up with director Harald Zwart who dropped some interesting news on us regarding his latest film, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Read on for details.
"The first monster you meet in the movie, I was inspired by ‘The Thing’, which I think is a great movie," says Zwart. "One of the scariest movies I ever saw and I loved every second of it. I just loved the idea of demons taking possession of other creatures and when they surface, the living creature is just a host. The body is cracked to pieces and wrongly reassembled. I used that as a hook to the creature design here. I liked the idea of a demon as something you haven’t seen before. I watched ‘The Exorcist’ a lot of times for this as well, I wanted to have some of that feel. You can feel the actor [at work] there.

We here at NextMovie are as Ya-curious as the next guy, and after paying a little visit to the Toronto, Ontario set of "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" we're thinkin' that maybe Sony's gotten itself that much-fussed Next Big Thing on its hands after all.
Yep, we trekked right up to Hollywood North and took studious notes while chatting up author Cassandra Clare and the film's shockingly gorgeous cast members: Lily Collins (that ruby-tressed heroine du jour, Clary Fray), Jamie Campbell Bower (main hunk Jace Wayland), Robert Sheehan (Bff-with-a-crush Simon Lewis), Kevin Zegers (the adoptive brohan with a 'tude, Alec Lightwood) and Jemima West (whip-wielder, Isabelle Lightwood).
So, what did we learn from this trek into the Shadowhunting world? Gobs, and here's a rundown!
1. Costumes matter

How do you get your audience both turned on and biting their nails at the same time? Start by contacting the graphic designers behind the latest (and final!) In the new sheet, courtesy of MTV Hollywood Crush, our favorite wannabe Shadowhunter Clary Fray (Lily Collins) is looking pretty worried and intense while her hot (we reiterate, hot) new friends — from left to right, Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower), Alec Lightwood (Kevin Zegers), Isabelle Lightwood (Jemima West) and Simon Lewis (Robert Sheehan) — stand behind her with the same hardened expression. Yeesh! Why so serious? Oh wait, they have been chosen (hola, tagline!) to save Clary's mother and defeat a team of malignant demons—duh.
