We all remember the time in our childhood when our parents/guardians sat us down and explained to us one of the hard truths of life: voice actors don't live forever. And we cried, and started pleading with them, asking "what about Bugs Bunny? He's had a consistent voice for over a hundred years!" To which they replied, "no he hasn't." And with tears in our eyes, we ran to our rooms, saving our caretakers from having to confront their own mortality.
When the voice actor of an iconic character passes away, the question of how to proceed with that character inevitably arises. For some, like Edna Krabappel of "The Simpsons," the character was respectfully retired after voice actor Marcia Wallace died. But for other characters, especially ones that have existed for decades and decades, a replacement must be found. This was the case with Minnie Mouse, whose longtime voice actor,...

"A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens was embraced by the British public from the moment it first dropped in 1843; it was an instant bestseller and the work has never been out of print since (via ThoughtCo). Almost 60 years later, the festive tale took a leap to the new-fangled medium of cinema with "Scrooge, or Marley's Ghost" in 1901. That title hinted at a vision of Film Adaptations Yet to Come; Scrooge was the star of the show and would become a juicy role for dozens of famous actors over the next 120 years.
Since Daniel Smith donned Scrooge's nightcap in that pioneering first adaptation, George C. Scott, Albert Finney, Reginald Owen, Patrick Stewart, and Henry Winkler have all given their distinctive take on the role, while Alastair Sim remains many people's definitive version of the character. Bill Murray put a modern spin on the tale in "Scrooged," while in animation we've had Mr. Magoo,...

There are Christmas movies, then there’s The Muppet Christmas Carol. In the years since its arrival in 1992, this surprisingly dedicated adaptation of Charles Dickens’ defining redemption story has emerged as a modern classic, dripping with nostalgia and indelibly linked to the childhood of a generation thanks to countless festive repeats. Full of memorable moments, beloved songs and that warm, fuzzy, festive feeling – for many, it’s just not Christmas until you’ve seen a frog in a top hat teach Michael Caine’s Scrooge the importance of empathy.
But beneath Kermit’s compassion and Ebeneezer’s humbugs lies an equally restorative tale of how Christmas saved the Muppets during their darkest hour. Reeling from the sudden death of Jim Henson, the company’s troupe of performers and its new de facto leader, Jim’s son Brian Henson, were left with a looming question: can this gang of frogs, bears,...

There are few things in this world that wouldn't become more enjoyable with the addition of the Muppets. Are you suffering through the child's birthday party you're attending? Well, here come the Muppets to liven things up! Is the anti-smoking PSA you're watching a bit depressing? Send in the Muppets! Divorce proceedings got you down? It's much more fun when you discover that The Great Gonzo is the judge!
This universal rule is why "The Muppet Christmas Carol" is so great. The movie is wonderful, however, because it also has Michael Caine playing the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. The film was the directorial debut of Brian Henson — the son of the legendary puppeteer, Jim Henson — and was greatly enhanced by the clash in styles of two legendary performers: Michael Caine and Kermit the Frog. While Kermit and his Muppet co-workers are known for their madcap antics, Caine went into the film with a different mindset.

When Muppets creator Jim Henson died in 1990, the future of the Muppets franchise felt up in the air to its fans. At the time, Disney had already been in negotiations to purchase the Muppets, but Henson was on record with his refusal. Disney, still with a foot in the door, co-financed two Muppet feature films in the 1990s -- "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and "Muppet Treasure Island," both directed by Henson's son Brian -- which proved to audiences that the Muppets were capable of living on. Indeed, the two films provided a fascinating new premise for the Muppets: they would be stock players in adaptations of classic literature. Sadly, this tack did not play itself out, and after the not-very-good, straight-to-video "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," that angle was abandoned.
Come now, Disney, "Muppet Midsummer Night's Dream," "Muppet Dracula," and "Muppet Moby-Dick" await.

The Muppets — specifically, the comedy-variety troupe featuring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, et. al. — are in their sixth decade of existence, but they have never been more perfectly deployed than in their first project together, the Seventies syndicated hit The Muppet Show. A faux variety series, each episode was a mix of two kinds of segments. The first were vaudeville-style sketches from the show-within-a-show, where the Muppets sang, danced, told corny jokes, and appeared in shows-within-the-show-within-the-show like Pigs in Space and Veterinarian’s Hospital. It definitely sounds fair to say that a lot of people might not even notice the overall change in Kermit’s voice, but it is there, and it’s become an issue that’s hard to pick a side on since the drama between the voice actor of Kermit the Frog, Steve Whitmire, the Henson family, and Disney is a back and forth headache of he said, she said, they said, that doesn’t appear to have an end to it. The problem is that Whitmire isn’t going quietly, and for one reason or another, the Henson family and Disney thought it would be

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What’s your favorite puppet character on TV of all time? Why?
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Paste Magazine
Given my lifelong love of Henson productions, most especially the Muppets (and all related movies), it’s no surprise that I’ve become fully obsessed with “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” But to pick a favorite puppet? It’s nearly impossible. I have to pick two. Ok, three. It’s important that they’re all represented!
For one: Deet, a Gelfling. The heart and soul of the series, so sweet, so cute. One of the series’ writers revealed recently that Deet is based off of the way his girlfriend talks about horses. It fits; Deet is pure goodness and joy, but she’s also strong and brave. Two: Hup, the...

Back in 2004, Disney bought the rights to The Muppets from the Jim Henson Company and since then we've seen a couple of films and an attempt at a TV series that didn't work out very well. It was also recently announced that they were going to give it another try and develop a new series for their streaming service and they have a Muppet Babies animated series on the way.
Now, I love The Muppets, but I haven't really been that impressed with what they've done with the property so far. I know a lot of fans feel the same way. It just doesn't have the same kind of magic that it used to have. Legendary Muppets performer Frank Oz recently opened up about this and in his comments, he says that Disney just doesn't get it.

“All my friends have worked with the Muppets. Everybody I know has done a thing with the Muppets and I always felt a little bit left out,” Michael Caine told Et in 1992 on the set of The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “But they only did half-hour television shows and I got to do a two-hour movie, so it's great.”
While Caine donned the trademark robes and night cap to portray Ebenezer Scrooge, the reimagining of the Charles Dickens classic also featured Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Fozzie as Mr. Fozziewig (modified from Fezziwig), Miss Piggy as Mrs. Cratchit and Gonzo as Dickens, who hilariously narrates the story with Rizzo the Rat. Despite the recognizable names and faces, some voices of the characters would sound a little different to Muppet fans.

A is for Alastair Sim. His performance in the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol still remains the definitive portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge.
B is for Bruce Willis. You can even get Die Hard festive jumpers now – ho-ho-ho.
C is for Channel 5. This lot love to start early with the Yuletide flicks; in fact I’m sure I saw one during August Bank Holiday.
D is for Disney. From Snow White to Frozen, they’ve made family entertainment into an art form, especially at this time of year..
E is for elves. Played by Dudley Moore and Will Ferrell amongst others, they’ve served Santa well over the years.

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy are joined by Caine as a hilarious Scrooge in this irresistibly sweet musical adaptation of Dickens’ festive tale
There may be some people who can watch Kermit the Frog’s nephew Robin give his heart-wrenching performance as Tiny Tim in The Muppet Christmas Carol without choking up. I am not among them.
When Dickens was writing A Christmas Carol in 1843, he was said to have taken long night walks through London in a state of passionate euphoria, covering 10 or 15 miles at a time, dreaming his masterpiece into existence. I like to think if in the course of these walks some spirit could have taken him into the future to show him the adaptations to come, this is the one he would have especially favoured. Only an obtuse snob would not see the sweetness and good-nature of The Muppet Christmas Carol from 1992 and now on rerelease,...

One of the most beloved Muppets hasn’t always had the cheery disposition it always portrays on stage. Kermit the Frog is as iconic as Jim Henson himself, the creator of the highly successful puppetry show, The Muppets. Henson served as the voice behind Kermit for many years until his death in 1990. Steve Whitmire, who carried the role of Kermit for 27 years, was hired to replace Henson after his death. Being the most recent Kermit, Whitmire’s voice is probably what most people associate Kermit with. Disney fired Whitmire earlier this year, citing unacceptable behavioral misconduct as the main reason.

"Dreams are how we figure out where we want to go. Life is how we get there. I’m headed this way."
As you may have already heard, last month longtime Kermit the Frog performer Steve Whitmire was fired by Disney. He has been the man behind Kermit for almost 30 years, ever since Jim Henson passed away in 1990. But, due to a series of events he was fired over “unacceptable business conduct.”
Disney has since replaced Whitmire with Matt Vogel and he recently made first public debut as the classic character. A clip has surfaced online featuring Vogel voicing Kermit and you know what? He sounds a lot like Kermit the Frog! I doubt anyone is going to complain. There are some very subtle differences, but most people probably won't notice. It seems like Disney got the perfect guy to take on the character. You can check out the clip below.

One month after Steve Whitmire was fired from voicing Kermit the Frog, fans of the Muppets can hear the new voice of the famous green puppet. In Monday’s “Muppet Thought of the Week” video, we see Kermit giving us some life lessons: “Dreams are how we figure out where we want to go. Life is how we get there.” In July, it was announced that Whitmire, the longtime performer behind the famous green puppet, would leave the Muppets after nearly 30 years. Matt Vogel, who voiced and operated Kermit’s doppelganger Constantine in the 2014 film “Muppets Most Wanted,” took over the role.
