Four-time Academy Award nominee Nathan Crowley grew up in England with his mother reading Roald Dahl stories to him. So he reached a full circle moment when, decades later, he was asked to serve as the production designer on Paul King’s “Wonka,” which offers a heartwarming origin story for Dahl’s iconic chocolatier.
“Obviously, the film when I was a young kid was unbelievable — Gene Wilder!” Crowley tells Variety. “How old was I, seven? It was just magic. It was part of my youth. So to get to do a ‘Wonka’ film, why wouldn’t you do that?”
In “Wonka,” the eccentric candymaker is not yet the jaded success story audiences know from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” in which he teaches brutal lessons to spoiled children. Willy (Timothée Chalamet) is just starting his career and has the singular goal of realizing his childhood dream of making and sharing...

A Vimeo subsidiary is offering pre-roll ads to publishers who wish to use them. Vhx, which lets users build their own subscription-based platforms in the over-the-top space, is giving partners to integrate pre-roll ads into those services if they wish.
Vhx, which Vimeo acquired last year, offers a number of different services, but one of its most useful features lets partners build their own subscription video on-demand platforms. Previously, only ad-free subscriptions were available through Vhx-built hubs, but now, intermediate plans -- colloquially referred to as “freemium” plans -- will let publishers offer reduced price points to consumers who are willing to see ads imported from Google DoubleClick on the content they watch. Outside of the Vhx world, this model is most notably employed by Hulu, which includes ads in its most basic subscription but lets buyers bump up to an ad-free experience for an extra $4 per month.

The adventure-filled past of the iconic scoundrel and everyone’s favorite Wookiee is going before cameras this month when principal photography on the untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story officially began February 20th at Pinewood Studios, London.
The movie will explore the duo’s adventures before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directors co-piloting the movie, with a cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca.
“Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous,” Lord and Miller said.

The app solution, which has been in beta testing over the last few months with Vhx partners Black&Sexy TV and Yoga with Adriene, includes support for browsing, subtitles, and offline playback on the iOS and Android versions.

Vhx has introduced a new feature to help video creators make more cash from their creations. The self-distribution platform that's powered the direct-to-consumer downloads of Aziz Ansari's comedy special, Hannah Hart, Mamrie Hart, and Grace Helbig's feature film, Cameron Dallas' Ferris Bueller's Day Off redux, and thousands of other titles just launched a subscription service platform, too. Creators can now build their own branded video subscription services and sell content directly to fans on a recurring basis.
The initiative, dubbed Vhx Subscriptions, allows creators to sign up for the revenue-sharing subscription platform for free and implement the service on their own domains. Then creators upload their videos, set rates along with an annual or monthly billing cycle, convince fans to subscribe, and collect the revenue. Each content producer has full access to video analytics, as well as customer data like email addresses. Vhx takes 10% + $0.50 per transaction, and...

When Vhx announced a $5 million funding round earlier in January, company co-founder and CEO Jamie Wilkinson explained how the new capital would allow his self-distribution platform to be included on more connected devices. Eight days later, Wilkinson's assertion has become reality: Vhx has launched a new app on Roku.
The Roku app fits in nicely with Vhx's recent redesign. Previously, creators set up their own Vhx pages, from which fans could purchase content on demand. This design left Vhx with little centralized presence, a drawback the company amended when it launched a "library" feature through which users could view all their downloaded materials as a united collection. The Roku app allows users to access that collection from any connected device.
Together with Vhx's recent iOS app launch, the debut of the platform's Roku channel caters to the increasing number of viewers who watch content on mobile devices

Vhx recently sought out more cash to keep helping creators sell their movies online in an easy-peasy manner. The online video distribution site just raised a $5 million funding round led by Comcast Ventures.
Vhx co-founder and CEO Jamie Wilkinson told Re/code his company has closed about $4.25 million of the funding push. In addition to Comcast, previous investors in Vhx are also returning for the new round, such as Union Square Ventures, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, and Reddit chairman Alexis Ohanian. Wilkinson believes the remaining $0.75 million will be raised via a “strategic investor” by the end of the month.
Since its inception, Vhx has been an advocate for online video distribution, specifically for independent and lesser-known films from creators. The company initially received $3.2 million in its first funding round back in August 2013, and has since gone on to distribute YouTuber Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart’s Camp Takota (as...

What do you get when you combine action figures, low-budget visual effects, and people dressed up as droids? Easy -- you get the epic fan-made Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back Uncut, which debuted on StarWars.com on October 10. The film is the sequel to the successful 2010 Star Wars Uncut, which recreated shot-for-shot the 2004 Special Edition of Star Wars EpisodeIV: A New Hope. Developer Casey Pugh created a website which asked fans to pick a scene, recreate it in 15 seconds, and submit it to the site for voting and possible inclusion in the final cut. The film ended up winning the 2010 Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Media. Empire Uncut does the same thing as its predecessor. Directed by Pugh and produced by Jamie Wilkinson, the film uses scenes taken from over 1500 fan submissions, compiling them together to create one amazing, eclectic version of The Empire Strikes Back.

If you hop onto YouTube tomorrow and see a loading symbol that simply won’t go away, don't panic -- the symbol's there for good reason. Along with several other Internet sites, large and small, YouTube will be participating in the Internet Slowdown Day. Organized by public advocacy organizations like Fight for the Future, Battle for the Net, and Demand Progress, the slowdown will take place on Wednesday, September 10. Its sole purpose is to promote net neutrality and convince the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to vote against a proposal which (in a nutshell) could allow “fast lane” connections for people and companies who can afford it, leaving everyone else stuck with slower connections and no way to improve their internet experience. This also means smaller video sites wouldn’t be able to compete with larger companies to deliver high quality of service (particularly in streaming cases, which Netflix has already...

Vhx is getting hip to transparency. The direct-to-fan distribution platform that gives content creators the tools with which to sell their online video works to audiences around the globe just launched a new feature detailing exactly how many dollar's worth of online video works those creators have sold. The new component of the site is dubbed Vhx Stats and highlights a number of the platform's top-level metrics with hopes the numbers will contribute to the conversation about the economics of how creators sell their work in an increasingly connected age. Yes, the move is also a savvy marketing tactic, but don't discount the authentic desires of Vhx's co-Founders Jamie Wilkinson and Casey Pugh (and their team) to be as open with their data as possible. After all, Wilkinson was at the Free Art & Technology Lab prior to Vhx, where he furthered the organization's goal of "enriching the public domain through...

1. "Veronica Mars:" It was good news and bad news for "Veronica Mars" this weekend, with the film based on the TV show simultaneously hitting theaters and VOD. The "marshmallows," as the film's fans are called, turned out in droves to support the Kickstarter-funded film, driving the box office to a healthy $2 million from 291 theaters (265 in the U.S.). But the bad news is that fans who contributed $35 via Kickstarter to get the movie made in exchange for a "free" digital download of the film, experienced some technical snafus due to problems with Ultraviolet, the digital "locker" system and Flixter, the movie app owned by Warner Bros., the film's distributor. Read more about the fiasco here. 2. Vhx to "Veronica Mars:" In response to the technical problems faced by some "Veronica Mars" backers, Jamie Wilkinson, Casey Pugh and Adam Klaff, the co-founders of Vhx, the direct-to-fan distribution platform that, among other things,...

"Veronica Mars," which Warner Bros. released simultaneously digitally and theatrically on March 14, had promised "free" downloads to fans who had pledged at least $35 towards the film's Kickstarter campaign. But some fans experienced technical snafus over the weekend and raised a stink on social media. Jamie Wilkinson, Casey Pugh and Adam Klaff are co-founders of Vhx, the direct-to-fan distribution platform that, among other things, works with Kickstarter to fulfill digital download promises to backers. They penned the following editorial regarding the the technical issues faced by "Veronica Mars." This past weekend, "Veronica Mars," after raising over $5M in production funds in contributions from over 90,000 backers on Kickstarter, hit theaters across the United States. Fueled by an incredibly loyal and passionate fan base, "Veronica Mars" quickly became one of the most successful crowdfunded films to-date. Its release is a watershed moment for how the...

Diy distribution platform Vhx made a big move at SXSW this week when it opened its digital doors to the public, allowing any content creator to sell direct to fans at low cost. The start-up founded in 2011 by Jamie Wilkinson and Casey Pugh had been in private beta for two years building a library of over 300 select titles from indie filmmakers and film companies including Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me, and Oscar nominated docu The Act of Killing. Unlike video distribution storefronts like Vimeo, Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, and iTunes, Vhx offers technology that allows makers to sell content direct to fans via high quality streaming or DRM-free download at price points of their choosing, on their own websites. That means flinging the gates wide open to any and all content. “The goal is to close the gap between interest and availability,” Vhx co-founder Wilkinson told me in Austin.

Amazingly, I spent five days at SXSW and didn't see one movie. But it was far from a waste of time. Sitting in on keynote sessions and panel discussions, I came away with a broad sense of how technological advances and the internet have expanded opportunities for filmmakers who no longer have to rely on the traditional gatekeepers to pursue their projects. After two years in beta, Vhx, the direct-to-fan distribution platform, opened to the public during SXSW and all artists are now be able to sell their work directly to fans from their own websites. Vhx co-founder Jamie Wilkinson said he was trying to get the word out to filmmakers that they don't need to wait for a distributor to acquire their film. "Filmmakers at Sundance are used to the model of the last 35 years which is I make a great film. I sell it to somebody else and they do all the legwork.

When Vhx, the direct-to-fan distribution platform, launched two years ago, they made a splash with the digital release for Aziz Ansari's stand-up special. Since then, Vhx has worked with other high profile artists including Dave Grohl and Kevin Spacey. There are now over 350 titles available for sale through the platform. Today, after two years in private beta, Vhx officially launches to the public and all artists will now be able to sell their work directly to fans from their own websites. "Throughout the past year, we've been building parts of the application and ended up building things like press screeners and couponing, a really robust platform with the goal of opening up to the public," Vhx co-founder Jamie Wilkinson told Indiewire at SXSW. "Our goal is to make it super easy for anybody to sell video content on the web directly to their fans." To coincide with the public launch,...

A pay-to-view online video platform is following the lead of several competitors and providing creators with a service through which they can sell content directly to fans. Vhx, which had previously only offered videos from select creators, has raised a $3.2 million funding round that will allow it to expand and accommodate all self-starters wishing to profit directly from their work. Vhx launched in 2011, and it launched its most notable release in March 2012 when it powered the exclusive distribution site for Aziz Ansari's comedy special, Dangerously Delicious. Since then, however, the online video pay-to-view landscape has become quite crowded. Platforms like Chill Direct and Yekra have given high-profile comedians and directors more distribution options, fundraising sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have seen increased popularity and efficacy, and Patreon and Subbable have used subscription-based donations to provide for online video creators. With so many options, Vhx has decided to market itself...

Lous Ck’s independent, online, unencumbered and DRM-free release of his video recording of Louis C.K. live at the Beacon Theater sold more than 200,000 copies at $5 a piece. That netted the stand-up comedian, actor, and television and film writer more than $1 million in revenue and proved bypassing traditional distribution outlets (e.g. television, worldwide DVD distributors, and even web-based, but digitally restricted virtual merchandisers like iTunes and Amazon) was a profitable gamble. It also gave fans of Louis C.K. around the world an elegant, surprisingly hassle-less way to watch and own a piece of content from an object of their enjoyment and opened up the eyes of at least a few individuals in the traditional and new media entertainment industries to an alternative way of doing business. Among those few individuals is Aziz Ansari. The comedian, actor, Shutterbugger, Human Gianter, and Parks and Recreationer just released his new, hour-long, stand-up special Dangerously Delicious online,...

The key to making a period ghost story that's genuinely scary is attention to detail. Here, the team behind The Woman in Black explain how they created the film's air of menace
The aesthetic of a horror film is the most important thing about it. If you get that wrong, everything is ruined. "In any film, the colour palette and the overall look are such important elements," explains Chris Moore, location manager for The Woman in Black. "But even more so in a period horror film, because you have to believe that you're in that period every step of the way. If there are any errors and the audience "sees" something they shouldn't, then they're back in the 21st century, it breaks the illusion and suddenly the "Woman in Black" is just a woman in makeup."
There was no danger of that on this set, where every nuance was scrutinised.

"Star Wars" fans, rejoice! "Star Wars Uncut: Director's Cut" has finally arrived! For the past 3 years, fans have been remaking their favorite scenes from "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope," 15 seconds at a time. The entire film has been re-created using entirely fan-made footage.
All along we've been able to see the pieces in-progress, but the final cut of the film has just been released by Casey Pugh, the creator of the project. Thousands of fans have submitted their work and the film won an Emmy. George Lucas approves. At the South by Southwest festival last year, Pugh and co-producer Jamie Wilkinson said that Lucas loved the idea and invited them to his office in San Francisco to hear all about it. Lucasfilm was originally concerned about branding problems if the film included commercial logos. As a result, the project is commercial-free and not for profit.

Three or so years ago in a borough of Manhattan, then Vimeo programmer (and since Boxee developer and Vhx co-founder) Casey Pugh conceived of an idea to slice Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope into its 473 15-second components and solicit fans of the flick and amateur filmmakers from around the around the globe to claim a component or two and shoot, swede, animate or otherwise visually display in moving picture form their best reenactment of whatever quarter-minute scene they claimed. Pugh called the idea Star Wars Uncut, and then called on friends Jamie Wilkinson (the other Vhx co-founder) and Annelise Pruitt and family member Chad Pugh to help him develop a website where he could collect and display a rotating array of the user-submitted scenes. The website Wilkinson, Pruitt, and Pugh developed allowed for each 15-second component to be claimed for reenactment three times. Each individual reenactment was...

Casey Pugh and Jamie Wilkinson know their online video. The former was on the original team at Vimeo as the video sharing site for cool kid’s Lead Flash and Senior App Developer and had a stint at Boxee as the internet TV and social networking software developer’s Head of Web Development. The latter was an Internet Scientist at the perennial online video program Rocketboom, helped conceive of and develop the Know Your Meme wiki and its accompanying web series, co-founded video discovery tool Magma, and taught an actual college class about internet fame at Parsons. (And Peter Thiel says higher education is a bubble. Ha!) Together, Pugh and Wilkinson also make up half the team that took home an Emmy Award for the crowdsourced reimagineering of the original Star Wars, Star Wars Uncut. You get the point. The two have a helluva lot of experience in the online video industry.

Embarrassed because you keep getting called a n00b on 4chan? Not quite grasping all the Lol cats being reblogged? Want to prep for all the super sweet online cultural conversations at the after parties during Internet Week? You gotta Know Your Meme. The Rocketboom offshoot that highlights and deconstructs online phenomena is always accumulating new entries (in August, for instance, they looked at tinaemusic through an academic lens), but it’s during the Holiday Season and New Year that Know Your Meme takes the spotlight away from the regularly scheduled Joanne Colan-hosted episodes of Rocketboom’s daily newscast and shines it on the ragtag group of Rocketboom producers that discusss the Wtf internet. In the past week Disaster Girl, the Lip Dub, the Iraqi Shoe Toss, and Boom Goes the Dynamite have all been explained and explored, but my favorite has to be the doe-eyed interpretation of the appeal of faux-Japanese-American,...
