With three issues under the belt it is time for a mid-term assessment of Robotech. I’m thinking a solid B, though a book that only looks like getting better rather than dropping off. I have been finding myself enjoying the nostalgia, the places and people, more than the actual specific script and ongoing story. Pacing has varied a little as well, as has the focus. Is this going to be mostly Rick and Minmei focused? Are they just the initial focus, and everyone will get their time in the Sun at some point? Not sure. I do like the fact though that Brian Wood has achieved a good balance, between old touches and new, definitely a positive.
Hopefully by now we all know robotech is the technology designed by fusing human tech with alien, specifically from the...

That time of the month again, when it’s time for a pure shot of full strength nostalgia. Every issue feels like a sugar rush, as you not only enjoy the story Brian Wood and Marco Turini are unfolding, but also all the little nods and winks to long term fans, with throwaway comments or referenced places and things. The creative team have found the perfect balance for readers both old and new, something not that easy to pull off.
Obligatory recap alert. Robotech, as you should all know by now, comes from robotechnology, a human/ alien amalgam that came from salvaging a huge crashed alien ship and tinkering with it, now rebranded for Earth as the superbly named Super-Dimension Fortress. Good, right? Yep, until those pesky aliens came back to reclaim their ship. Pilot Rick Hunter and...

The term ‘reboot’ can be overused these days, used for the most minor changes or just to drum up interest in a new Number 1 issue. Not so with the Robotech reboot from Brian Wood and Marco Turini, which as the first issue showed was a true reboot. Brian Wood’s re-imagining focuses on two main things. Firstly, he took the story back to Macross Island, where it all began decades ago. Secondly, and more impressively, he decided everything that came before was canon. So all those self contained books, comics and TV episodes are now part of the RoboWoodVerse. We may need to work on that name obviously, but an impressive intention all the same.
So last issue was mainly about setting the scene for new readers and refreshing the memories of the old. Ten years ago...

You can’t judge a book by its cover, but in comics we do. That’s what sells it. Oftentimes, comics retailers need to make pre-ordering decisions based largely on just a comic’s cover.
Comics, like people, should be enjoyed for what’s on the inside. Corny but true. But like the B-side of a vinyl record, sometimes there’s glory on the flipside, like with comic book back covers.
Emil Novak, Sr. runs a great store in Buffalo called Queen City Bookstore. It’s overflowing with comics and lost treasures, most reflecting Emil’s ravenous appetite for great comics. During my last visit there, I stumbled across The Spirit: The First 93 Dailies reprint comic from 1977. The front cover sported a heroic Eisner Spirit image, but the back cover, showing an exhausted Spirit collapsed in the snow was the cool part. And the courageous use of negative space really stood out.

There’s a new digital comics platform on the horizon, and it looks fantastic in its simplicity. The new mobile comics platform, coming to us in early 2016, is called Stela (pronounced “Steela”). It is a both an app and a publisher, being a platform optimized for smartphones that offers exclusive original content by award-winning writers and illustrators, including Evan Dorkin, Sarah Dyer, Joe Casey, Irene Koh, Brian Wood, Ron Wimberly, Stuart Moore, and many more.
The founders of Stela come from the comics, gaming, and mobile gaming industries; and its leadership includes Creative Director and Editor-in-Chief Ryan Yount, and Senior Editor Jim Gibbons (formerly of Dark Horse Comics). Stela intends to bring new content to the app every weekday, and will be available via subscription.
What’s interesting about the design of Stela is that not only is the app optimized for smartphones via heavy use of the vertical scrolling...

Starve #1
Written by Brian Wood
Illustrated by Danijel Zezelj
Coloured by Dave Stewart
Lettering by Clayton Cowles and Steve Wands
Starve stands fairly freely amongst other comics that have culinary as a part of their stories. Chew does have the food industry as a major component to its backdrop and the standalone graphic novel Get Jiro proved that you could have a culinary aspect and make a fresh and exciting book. Yet, there aren’t many North American based comic books that have food involved. In Japanese manga and anime, the situation is much more different through the popularity of many titles like What Did You Eat Yesterday?, Oishinbo, Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, and many more. It makes sense that Starve, especially through its artwork, has this manga-like appeal to it, fueled by a storyline that has a sharp, political edge to it; wouldn’t expect anything less from the brilliant Brian Wood.

Rebels #3
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Andrea Mutti
Colors by Jordie Bellaire
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Seth Abbott finds himself in the middle of a game of tug of war. On one side, there’s his sense of adventure and his extreme patriotism. On the other side there’s his marriage to Mercy. Seth can’t stay in the middle and expect both war and love to coexist peacefully. This triangle is at the center of Rebels #3. Most of this issue is dedicated to juxtaposing a story of Seth having to literally pull his father home in a frozen wilderness and scenes of Mercy’s droll and lonesome life. It was easy to see in the first two issues that Seth would be hard pressed to continue to be a patriot and a devoted husband, now we find out he’s to be a father as well.

Rebels #2
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Andrea Mutti
Colors by Jordie Bellaire
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Rebels is starting to gain some traction and we see it especially in the relationship between Seth and Mercy. While Seth is away, Mercy must make sure all the chores are done and the house doesn’t burn. She feels like the adult, and Seth is the child, who gets to run away from responsibility and run around with his friends. On the other side of the coin, though, Seth is trying to help with the revolution.
The relationship between these two is much more interesting than the action scene in this issue. Sure, sinking a large ship full of concrete slabs seems fun, but it falls flat. This action is one small scene within a whole revolution, whereas Seth and Mercy’s relationship is tangible and won’t end when the revolution is over.

History is often bombarded with grand events being the only thing that is of worth. Many times it’s more enjoyable to look at the nuances in these grand events to directly learn about it. This central theme is seen throughout Brian Wood’s new book Rebels. Wood takes readers into the 18th century American colonies and the American Revolutionary War. The storyline follows a man named Seth Abbott and a band of militiamen who are challenging the British force in the colonies. This small-scale look at the life of a few militiamen is a great read.
Wood’s story starts quickly with a firing squad of Americans facing off against some meandering British soldiers and crescendos with even more local battle. The writing is effective and engaging. It’s easy to...

A tall, bearded man and a shorter, jet-haired woman stand motionless shoulder-to-shoulder in a forest clearing. A hunting rifle is slung across the woman’s shoulder. The sun sets in front of them, casting deep shadows on the surrounding leaves, tinting them turquoise-blue. A solemn caption at their feet reads, “My war was begun.” So ends the first issue of Brian Wood and Andrea Mutti’s Rebels, a new ten-issue series from Dark Horse Comics that tells the story of the American Revolution through the eyes of Seth Abbott, a founding member of the Green Mountain Boys militia. This isn’t Wood’s first foray into historical fiction; in 2008, he penned Northlanders, which chronicles the efforts of an exiled Viking prince to claim his inheritance. In Rebels, Wood focuses on the politics behind the war and the roiling discontent of the British colonists that eventually boiled over into eight years of bloody conflict.

Sometimes peace is purchased with violence.
-- Salt Lake County Sheriff James Winder, in Peace Officer
William "Dub" Lawrence is the perfect documentary subject. After a long career in law enforcement, he has many stories to tell -- he helped break the Ted Bundy case as a rookie cop, and the failings of criminal justice he saw on the beat inspired his successful run for Sheriff of Davis County, Utah in 1974. Now semi-retired, he works as a private investigator and, curiously, also repairs water and sewage pumps. In his spare time, he flies his private plane.
He's also spent much of his spare time investigating a tragic episode in his life, one that inspired the enraging new documentary Peace Officer: In 2008, the Swat team he established 30 years earlier killed his son-in-law, Brian Wood, during a standoff at Wood's house.

"Gravity" producer David Heyman, along with "Mad Men" executive producers Andre and Maria Jacquemetton, continue developing a TV series adapting DC Comics' 'near future' title "Dmz" ("Demilitarized Zone") :
Published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint, "Dmz" debuted in 2005, with 72 original issues published over 7 years, created and co-illustrated (with Riccardo Burchielli) by Brian Wood.
"Dmz" is set in the near future, where a second American civil war has turned the island of Manhattan into a 'Demilitarized Zone', caught between the forces of the government and the secessionist 'Free States of America'.
The "Free States" movement began with an uprising of secessionist groups that formed a separate government in Montana before spreading across the country.
The "Free Armies" and government military first met in combat at Allentown, Pennsylvania where the Free Armies won, then marched into New York. A planned evacuation of Manhattan goes wrong, but despite that, the...

Marvel Comics has added a host of classic Star Wars comics to comiXology.
The titles, which were published by Dark Horse Comics in the years that it controlled the Star Wars licence, have made their way to the digital comics app for the first time.
The releases include Legacy, the fan favourite Dark Empire, Brian Wood's recent Star Wars series and The Star Wars, which adapted the much-altered original draft of George Lucas's script.
Dark Horse does not make its titles available on Amazon-owned platform comiXology, preferring its own apps.
Marvel will return to publishing original Star Wars comics with Jason Aaron, John Cassaday, and Laura Martin's Star Wars series.
Star Wars #1 - which has received orders of over 1 million - will be released on January 14.

The Massive #27

Is Brian Wood’s The Massive really approaching the 30th issue milestone… already? It didn’t seem long ago when Kristian Donaldson’s beautiful art was teasing the history of characters like Mag and Mary. The Massive looked to be the spiritual successor to Dmz back in early 2012. Timely, political, character driven, personal, and smart. This issue may just end up being the series’ climax of sorts, serving up the biggest revelation of the series and one that has been teased since the title’s announcement. As the moment plays out, I realize this is not the spiritual successor to Dmz… (Stuart Smalley voice) and that’s okay.
[*** Spoilers for The Massive #27 and the series as a whole to follow.***]

(Cbr) - Reading and watching some of the countless tributes to Robin Williams, who passed away far too soon on Monday, I was reminded that, in addition to being a father, a husband, a comedian, an actor and a philanthropist, he was also a comics fan. "I used to get excited emails from comics stores all over America when Robin Williams would drop in to buy 'Transmetropolitan' issues," Warren Ellis recalled Monday on Twitter. A semi-regular customer at Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles, Williams discussed his love of comics in a video interview we spotlighted in 2010 on Robot 6. In the clip, he fondly relates his latest reads: Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli's "Dmz," and Taiyo Matsumoto's "Tekkonkinkreet." Watch the brief interview below.
