Ah, the glory days of early 2000s television, when studios scrambled to capitalize on the success of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Friends," and "Beverly Hills, 90210." Enter The WB's "Smallville," a Superman prequel based on the blue boy's formative years, before he donned the tights, red underwear, and cape. Starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lane, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, and Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, the series offered a fun spin on the Superman story and tinkered with iconic characters in a way that made them feel fresh. Lex Luthor, for example, starts out as Clark's best friend and gradually devolves into his comic-book counterpart. At the same time, Superman regulars such as Lois Lane (Erica Durance), Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore), and Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort) were given makeovers to properly update them for the modern era; ditto...

Rizzoli and Isles haven't solved a new case on TV in nearly six years.
While Tess Gerritsen continues to write new novels on the beloved duo, we've been left with a significant gap in our lives as their lives go on without us bearing witness on-screen.
The iconic duo of Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander were TV staples for over 100 episodes, but what are they (and the rest of the cast) doing now?
In Memorium: Lee Thompson Young -- Detective Barry Frost
Lee Thompson Young, who played Detective Frost (one of Jane Rizzoli's closest co-workers), tragically passed away in 2013 before the filming of Season Five.
Detective Frost's death got handled beautifully by the writers, from his death in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 1 to Jane seeing a vision of him in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 18.
The episodes throughout Season Five left us crying, laughing, and missing Lee Thompson Young's presence on our screens.

Rizzoli & Isles is getting a new team member this week, but you might not even realize it at first.
Idara Victor (Turn) joins the drama as Nina Holiday, who's quietly introduced on Tuesday's episode (9/8c, TNT) with such little fanfare that you might assume it's a drive-by guest-starring role. But the low-key debut was a decision executive producer Jan Nash did not take lightly. "I think usually it would be a big deal for any show, but we didn't make it too much of a thing at the beginning," Nash tells TVGuide.com. "We wanted to ease into it given the circumstances."

Lee Thompson Young committed suicide in August of 2013 at the age of 29 while filming one of the final episodes of season 4 of Rizzoli & Isles. After the show ended in 2003, Young continued to appear in many television shows and films before landing the part of Detective Barry Frost on TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles.
Young’s death came as a shock to fans, who were unaware of Young’s mental illness. When his cause of death was revealed to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound, it was soon reported that Young was being treated for bipolar disorder.

Rizzoli & Isles acknowledged the death of their colleague, Lee Thompson Young, on a credit roll in August of 2013, but it was in tonight’s episode, “Goodbye,” where they sadly addressed the death of the character he played — Detective Barry Frost and said goodbye to Lee Thompson Young. Lee, 29, was found dead in his North Hollywood home last August of an apparent suicide. Much of this episode captured real emotion on the part of the cast. The pictures they showed of Lee Thompson Young included ones of him as a little boy and candid shots of the cast having fun. … Continue reading →

Tonight's television offerings brought us some sadness, some happiness, some whaaaaaat, and several awws as we said goodbye to a couple shows and one beloved character. We may never know, but continue on to hear how the drama played out. Rizzoli & Isles: It's back, but in a bittersweet sort of way. Tonight was not only the first episode of season 5, but it was also the first episode to deal with the absence of Lee Thompson Young, who died last August. The year now ending marks another 12-month period of losing talents who have given television viewers entertainment or information ... and some of those passings, even more sadly, came as major and untimely shocks. Zap2it remembers:

For this Thanksgiving week edition of Lone Star Cinema, I selected an influential football film from the mid-aughts. Before the acclaimed series Friday Night Lights started shooting in town, the 2004 film, starred Billy Bob Thornton as coach to a Texas high school football team. Based on the same-titled book by Buzz Bissinger, Friday Night Lights depicts the 1988 season of the Permian Panthers of Odessa, from the promising pre-season to their challenging finish at state.
The movie places quick scenes from the lives of several of the senior players in between montages of the Friday night action in Odessa's Ratliff Stadium. Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher) plays Boobie Miles, an assured running back who is the team's star. I'd argue Luke gives the best performance in the movie. Midway through Friday Night Lights, his character faces an obstacle he may not be able to overcome, and Luke aptly conveys Boobie's bluster, might and heartbreak.

Exclusive: Jan Nash is joining TNT‘s flagship drama series Rizzoli & Isles as executive producer/showrunner. She will succeed creator/executive producer Janet Tamaro, who stepped down as showrunner in September, right after the series wrapped production on Season 4. One of the first orders of business for Nash and her writing team will be dealing with the death of Rizzoli & Isles co-star Lee Thompson Young, who committed suicide in August during the filming of the second-to-last episode of Season 4. His death was not addressed in the final episodes of Season 4 and will be dealt with at the opening of Season 5. Rizzoli & Isles is TNT’s No. 1 show of all time and the No. 2 scripted series in the history of ad-supported cable television, behind only AMC’s The Walking Dead. The series reunites Nash with Warner Bros TV and its cable division Warner Horizon. She previously worked with the studio on another TNT drama series,...

We’ve lost one of the most recognizable voices in TV. Marcia Wallace, an actress who found her calling giving life to the cranky teacher on The Simpsons, died on Oct. 25. She was 70 years old.
Marcia Wallace Dead At 70
Marcia passed away in her Los Angeles home with her family by her side, a close friend of hers told our sister site Deadline.
“She passed at 9 p.m. last night due to complications from breast cancer of which she was a long and proud survivor and advocate for women and healing,” the friend Cathryn Michon said. “Ironically, it was during breast cancer awareness month during which she was always a funny ray of hope for so many. I’m devastated.”
Marcia was just a week away from her 71st birthday.

Sunday night's Emmy Awards telecast tried to do something a little different by singling out five stars who had recently passed away and independently eulogizing them with anecdotes from their respective former co-stars and friends. The choice courted controversy from the start, especially with Glee's Cory Monteith being one of the stars chosen to be remembered, since many believed that more established stars -- such as Dallas and I Dream of Jeannie favorite Larry Hagman -- were passed over. Et exclusively sat down with Hagman's son, Preston Hagman, to get his take on the matter, and he declared, "If you're going to respect and recognize them, then do it correctly."

Updated: It’s never good news when the creator/showrunner of a successful series exits. That has happened on TNT’s flagship drama Rizzoli & Isles, with Janet Tamaro, who developed the series based on the novels by Tess Gerritsen and served as executive producer/showrunner on the first four seasons. The departure of Tamaro, who will remain as a consultant while developing new projects, comes less than a month after production on Rizzoli & Isles was shut down and the show’s writers had to regroup following the sudden passing of co-star Lee Thompson Young. It also comes just as production wrapped on Season 4. (The death of Young, who committed suicide during the filming of the second to last episode, will be addressed at the beginning of Season 5.) It follows persistent talk about discord on the Rizzoli & Isles set and speculation that Tamaro may depart. “This is what we all dream of getting to do,...
