Has anyone else noticed that Alex Avila and Jim Leyland have grown to be the best of friends lately? I don't remember Leyland showing as much affection for a current Tigers player at any point during his tenure in Detroit. I keep seeing them hamming it up in the dugout, and it's not hard to see why Avila would be such a beloved guy for a manager. He plays hard, he plays smart, he plays hurt, he's a great teammate, he does little things well. And Leyland, a former catcher, always has a soft spot for his own kind.
So Leyland must have been going through a little withdrawal lately since Avila has been on the disabled list and not travelling with the team.
Today in a pregame press meeting, Leyland was giving updates on his myriad injured players. When he came to Avila, he said:
"Alex is feeling great.
