"Why are humans so obsessed with recreating themselves?" GKids Films has revealed a new official trailer for the 4K re-release of the sci-fi anime classic Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, a highly regarded sequel to the seminal anime Ghost in the Shell (1995). This is one of the only animated movies to ever premiere in the Main Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, screening there in 2004 after first opening in Japan. In the year 2032, Batô, a cyborg detective for the anti-terrorist unit Public Security Section 9, investigates the case of a female robot – created solely for sexual pleasure – who slaughtered her owner. Acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii pushes further into the world and concepts first developed in his groundbreaking Gits. With its thought-provoking speculations on artificial intelligence, which have only become more relevant in our present world, Innocence celebrates its 20th anniversary returning to cinemas in a lustrous 4K restoration. With the voices of Akio Ōtsuka,...

There are few characters in pop culture cooler than Snake Plissken from John Carpenter's sci-fi classic "Escape From New York." Played by the also impossibly cool Kurt Russell, Plissken is a former U.S. Army Special Forces lieutenant who served in World War III before being wounded and becoming a criminal. In "Escape From New York," he's offered the chance at a pardon by the feds if he can carry out a dangerous rescue mission in Manhattan, which has been turned into a massive prison. Russell would reprise the role in 1996 in order to reteam with frequent collaborator Carpenter on "Escape from L.A.," which sees Snake playing basketball for his life and surfing the L.A. river. Then, around 2004, he had the chance to voice another character named Snake who looks an awful lot like Plissken, but he turned it down.

Netflix is no stranger to bringing iconic video game adaptations to its platform. The latest to join the roster is ‘Onimusha,’ based on Capcom’s legendary action video game series. This isn’t just another action-packed series; it carries the rich historical backdrop of Japan’s Warring States period. It promises to blend history, action, and a touch of the supernatural in a captivating anime rendition.
Set in an age where swordplay was as much art as it was warfare, ‘Onimusha’ tells the tale of Miyamoto Musashi. This wandering swordsman isn’t your ordinary warrior. Armed with the mythical Oni Gauntlet, Musashi embarks on a perilous mission. His objective? To confront and defeat malevolent beings known as Genma. These are no mere foes, as they wield otherworldly powers, pushing Musashi to his limits.
The teaser offered viewers a tantalizing glimpse into Musashi’s world. The focus was clear – a relentless hunter of demons,...

While Konami seems to have been hogging all of the animated Netflix video game adaptations lately, Capcom has countered with a new trailer for Onimusha, which is set to start streaming on November 2. Set to “The Loneliest” by Måneskin, the trailer doesn’t get into the demon-slaying that the video games are known for just yet, but that’s quickly rectified.
Unlike the Castlevania Netflix adaptations, Onimusha instead utilizes 3D animation with a cel-shaded art style from animation studio Sublimation and director Shinya Sugai, whose work includes the CG anime adaptation of another Capcom property, Dragon’s Dogma.
Directed by Takashi Miike and featuring the voice talents of Akio Otsuka, Toshihiko Seki, Hochu Otsuka, Daiki Yamashita, Subaru Kimura and Katsuyuki Konishi, Onimusha will focus on Miyamoto Musashi, who is modeled after Japanese film icon Toshiro Mifune.

Make My Day is an animated movie directed by Makoto Honda. The screenplay is written by Yasuo Ohtagaki.
Make My Day is a Japanese animated series that takes us to a sort of Half Life (the videogame) in a strange planet where a dangerous plague is spreading that will affect humanity. The only ones that reach this place are the worst criminals, condemned and alone fighting against a very real threat.
Another anime proposal on Netflix that lately is providing us with a couple of them every week (Record of Ragnarok was the latest one). This time, a very different kind of offering with much more computer animation, more modern and less “classic”, but will surely find its audience in the endless and thrilling world of Japanese anime.

"If you want my blood... come and get it!" Eureka Entertainment has debuted a new official UK trailer for a Japanese action thriller titled Re:Born, which premiered at a few genre film festivals last year. Re:Born features a hand-to-hand fighting technique called "Zero-Range Combat", originally developed by combat strategist and master fight instructor Yoshitaka Inagawa. The cast includes Tak Sakaguchi, Yura Kondo, Takumi Saitô, Mariko Shinoda, and Akio Ôtsuka. This trailer has hints at some of the badass action in this film, which looks like a lot of very close-range fighting, including inside a phone booth at one point. No doubt eager to capitalize on the upcoming live-action adaptation, Anchor Bay Entertainment and its subsidiary Manga Entertainment are gearing up for a deluxe rerelease of the original animated Ghost in the Shell. First released in Japan and the Us in 1995, the landmark science fiction film by legendary director Mamoru Oshii is one of the most visionary and influential films in the “cyberpunk” subgenre that exploded onto the silver screen with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and enjoys a longstanding literary tradition thanks to authors like William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. Taking an unmistakably Japanese (and indubitably Oshii) approach to the genre, Ghost famously features both mesmerizing action sequences that inspired the Wachowskis in the direction of The Matrix, and lengthy meditations on transhumanism, existentialism, and spirituality in a hypercapitalist dystopia where human bodies and memories are subject to the same means of production and reproduction as any material resource.

Japanese voice actor Akio Otsuka has seemingly confirmed what we have long feared: Kojima Productions has effectively been disbanded ahead of the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in September.
As the artist who brings Snake to life in Konami’s native country of Japan, Otsunka’s comments, while unconfirmed, do hold a degree of weight. Couple this with the fact that the final boxed version of The Phantom Pain strips Hideo Kojima’s name from the picture and it’s not exactly outside the realm of possibility. While there are still a lot of grey areas surrounding the esteemed developer’s imminent exit, it’s understood that his contract will expire under Konami by the year’s end, long after the upcoming stealth sequel has shipper to the public.

The intriguing Hideo Kojima drama continues unabated today after a Metal Gear Solid voice actress took to Twitter to reveal that the esteemed developer was allegedly fired from Konami, and that the upper echelons of the company had “fired a genius.” A genius though he may be, Donna Burke’s claims weren’t supported with any tangible evidence, and the Japanese publisher has since reached out to VideoGamer to deny Burke’s allegations, stating that any conjecture that Kojima is leaving on bad terms is “categorically incorrect.”
Burke, who has worked under Hideo Kojima for last year’s Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, caused quite the kerfuffle after posting the following message on her personal Twitter account.
