Justin Kuritzkes has back-to-back adaptations in the works.
The screenwriter has been one of Luca Guadagnino’s closest collaborators of late. His “Challengers” just premiered to rave reviews and he’s already set to adapt “Queer,” the novel originally written by William S. Burroughs, for the director as well. At the Los Angeles premiere of “Challengers,” the screenwriter spoke with us about adapting the novel as well as “City on Fire,” the first of a bestselling novel trilogy from Don Winslow, which Austin Butler will lead.
Adaptations are challenging, but Kuritzkes has a method to the madness. In our conversation, he teased what he’s working on and how he approaches IP. He revealed that “Queer” is something Guadagnino has wanted to make since he was a teenager when the book came out in 1985, “I was so touched and honored when he asked me to read it and to see...

A year ago, trades announced that Oscar-nominee Austin Butler (“Dune: Part Two“) would be leading a feature film adaptation of the famous Don Winslow crime saga novel “City On Fire”. A potential franchise starter for Sony, the crimed dra awould explore two criminal empires, Irish and Italian syndicates, that control New England and has been compared to the scope of something on the level of “The Godfather.” It’s been a long minute since we’ve heard an update, but Deadline reports the project has landed an impressive screenwriter to tackle the script.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. Austin Butler's career is certainly on fire at the moment, between his scene-stealing role in Dune: Part Two and his small screen work on Masters Of The Air. So naturally, he's in demand. The actor has now landed another plum role, starring in Darren Aronofsky's next film, Caught Stealing.
The Whale's director has author Charlie Huston adapting his own novel, which follows Hank Thompson (Butler), a burned-out former baseball player whose neighbor lands him with a cat and a whole world of trouble. He's soon deep within the New York crime scene, running for his life and trying to figure out what he's truly gotten himself into.
“I am excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers,” Aronofsky tells Deadline.

Many other Republican candidates have suspending their campaigns this cycle, but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ exit inspired some pretty biting and snarky reactions today, coming from other politicos and some celebrities.
The reaction may be due to the fact that DeSantis focused so much of his campaign on the culture wars, taking on The Walt Disney Co. even though it is one of the largest employers in the Sunshine State. Or it was due to the fact that DeSantis and a SuperPAC supporting campaign poured tens of millions of dollars into the race, only to finish a distant second in Iowa and not even make it to the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary. Or it was that his campaign was the source of fodder for late-night comics and commentators, including his glitchy Twitter campaign kickoff and attention to his foot attire.

Earlier this week, Amazon and Netflix started a bidding war over the rights to “Crime 101,” an adaptation of a Don Winslow novella with Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal attached to star. No surprise there, as Pascal is one of the buzziest actors in the industry right now, and Hemsworth’s projects continue to succeed. According to Puck, Amazon has won the “Crime 101” sweepstakes, with a $90 million deal; not quite the projected $100 million from earlier this week, but still steep.

Netflix and Amazon are currently competing for a lucrative package deal. The two streaming giants are in a bidding war over a novella by Don Winslow called Crime 101. The package includes two attached stars — Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal. It also has a director set to helm the project with Bart Layton, whose credits include the documentary The Imposter from 2012 and American Animals from 2018. The bidding war for the property may have been narrowed down to Netflix and Amazon, but Deadline is reporting that Amazon currently has the edge in the fight.
Although the actors and directors are attached, there is currently no deal in place, according to sources. Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, both Hemsworth and Pascal were showing interest and, presumably, both had been forbidden to do any official business once the strike had taken place. At this point, it is reportedly more of a rights deal...

Exclusive: In a whopping deal, Amazon and Netflix are battling ferociously for Crime 101, a package based on a novella by Don Winslow that has Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal attached to star. American Animals helmer Bart Layton is attached to direct the film. It came down to Amazon and Netflix, sources said. Amazon appears to have the edge.
No deals are in place and according to sources both actors have shown interest in the project prior to the strike. This technically at this point is a rights deal with a UK-based producer, which passes the sniff test.
Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, and Shane Salerno’s Story Factory are the production companies that put the package together along with CAA.
It’s a great crime story in the vein of Heat. High-level jewel thefts are taking place up and down the Pacific Coast and police have linked them to the Colombian cartels.

‘Elvis’ star, Austin Butler, has landed the role of a crime boss in the adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel, ‘City on Fire.’

Austin Butler will star in Sony 3000 Pictures’ adaptation of “City on Fire.” The Don Winslow-penned novel, the first in a series, uses elements of “The Iliad,” “The Odyssey,” “Aeneid” and other Greek dramas and puts them in a contemporary crime sandbox. Butler will play Danny Ryan, a street criminal-turned-ruthless leader amid a gang war between Irish and Italian crime families in New England.
The film will mark the actor’s first role since his Oscar-nominated for playing Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” as well as his first as a producer. Butler will produce the picture alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno.
3000 Pictures exec Drew Reed was instrumental in tracking the series, while Elizabeth Gabler and Marisa Paiva are overseeing for the studio. All parties hope that the first film will be successful enough to justify feature film adaptations of the next two novels in the series.

Fans, admirers and former colleagues honored broadcast legend Barbara Walters, who died Friday at age 93, hailing her talent and skill as a journalist and the barriers she blew open for women in media over her decades in the business.
“Barbara Walters never flinched when questioning the world’s most powerful people. She held them accountable. She cared about the truth and she made us care too. Fortunately, she inspired many other journalists to be just as unrelenting. We are all better off because of her,” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote.
Moments after the news broke, Oprah Winfrey posted a touching tribute on Instagram. “Without Barbara Walters there wouldn’t have been me—nor any other woman you see on evening, morning, and daily news,” she captioned a photo of them together. “She was indeed a Trailblazer. I did my very first television audition with her in mind the whole time.”

Dan Chase, the protagonist of FX’s new drama The Old Man, is on the run. He’s being chased — see what they did there? — by several agencies of the American government, at least one deadly contractor and international adversaries. He’s a clever man, but his primary antagonist is time — a past catching up to him and a future becoming more finite.
It’s a part made for Jeff Bridges, one of those actors who was born for and into Hollywood stardom and who has grown gracefully from golden boy to sage septuagenarian on movie screens nationwide. As if the star’s gravitas weren’t enough, it’s almost impossible to watch The Old Man without thinking about the show’s delays for both the Covid pandemic and Bridges’ cancer — without considering time.
As a thriller, The Old Man doesn’t always deliver.

On his social media feeds, Winslow regularly drops videos like #JoeManchinSenatorForSale or Trump is Lying to You.
