From the Nutcracker to American Psycho, from Mary Poppins to Kurt Vile, our critics pick their must-sees of the festive season
If you wish it could be Christmas every day
Nutcrackers, various
You know it's Christmas in the ballet world by the number of Nutcrackers touring the world's stages. In the UK alone, there are close to a dozen doing the rounds, but the top three remain the Royal Ballet's exquisitely traditional version, the sparky family friendly production by Birmingham Royal Ballet, and English National Ballet's – with the best snow scene of them all. Royal Opera House, London (020-7304 4000), 4 December to 16 January; Birmingham Hippodrome (0844 338 5000), to 12 December; London Coliseum (020-7845 9300), 11 December to 5 January.
Father Christmas
Does Father Christmas use the loo? Does he secretly long for summer? Does he have strong views on the size of chimneys? You bet he does. Raymond Briggs's gorgeous picture book gets a heartwarming makeover for under-sixes.

Review: Beautiful music and an epic setting come together for Kenneth Branagh’s The Magic Flute The creative tools at writer/director Kenneth Branagh’s disposal for his lavish, World War I-set, English-language adaptation of Mozart’s 1791 opera The Magic Flute begin with an attractive cast of emerging opera stars including Metropolitan Opera lyric bass René Pape. Production designer Tim Harvey helps Branagh recreate the No Man’s Land battlefields of World War I era France with epic dazzle. Los Angeles Opera music director James Conlon and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe bring to life Mozart’s timeless score. Actor and writer Stephen Fry adapts Emanuel Schikaneder’s original German libretto into an accessible English version with Branagh providing the screenplay. The result is a lively mix of cinematic imagery and stage opera staging. Branagh’s movie may fail to capture the spark of watching a live performance at one...

Last week our critics picked their highlights of 2011. Did they get it right? Readers respond with their own highs (and lows)

One Man, Two Guvnors was the most fun I've had in a theatre for years – easily the best play of 2011, and James Corden best performer. The National theatre largely misfired for me: A Woman Killed with Kindness, Cherry Orchard, 13, The Kitchen, Frankenstein and Greenland were all largely disappointing.
The RSC's Homecoming was the best revival. Rupert Goold's Merchant of Venice was great fun, even if the inconsistency in Portia's characterisation (from ditzy blond Glee fan to brilliant prosecutor, hm) took the edge off it.
Tom Brooke was my favourite actor of the year – in The Kitchen, and I Am the Wind.

Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid are still two of my least-admired starchitects. However, credit where it's due. I had the pleasure of wandering Toronto's Ago...
