Much of the charm of Netflix's "Wednesday" can be attributed to the series' meticulous worldbuilding and set design, where tiny, imperceptible details add to the gothic aura of this world. Nevermore Academy emerges as an entity in its own right — it is a magical school that houses supernatural students who are encouraged to pursue their darkest ambitions that are often steeped in magic. The school's exterior is lavish and grandiose, while the interiors are peppered with spooky set dressing that accentuates the tone of the series. Even in this mysterious, gothic setting, a 16-year-old Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) stands out, mostly due to her aloof nature and her penchant for poking her nose in matters that don't directly concern her.
The school's interiors play a crucial role in propping up character dynamics and motivations. For instance, the huge greenhouse with intriguing, dangerous plants becomes the site for hidden secrets that are revealed later,...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Netflix, for this edition, we look at how production design, costume design, and visual effects of “Wednesday” all came together to build a world worthy of Wednesday Addams.
If there isn’t already, one day there will be an “Addams Family” filter on Instagram: something that makes you look gaunter and paler and turns all your clothing black and white. This story about the production design of “Wednesday” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Creepy. Kooky. Spooky. Ooky. All of these adjectives are naturally in play when you’re adapting a spinoff series of “The Addams Family” — even more so when Tim Burton is your boss. For “Wednesday” production designer Mark Scruton, that made him as happy as Wednesday Addams witnessing a torture chamber.
“When I got this gig, I very consciously did not watch any of [the past adaptations],” Scruton said. “I did go back to the Charles Addams cartoons very specifically, but we wanted to take it back to that original core look and aesthetic. Tim responds to his heart and he’s a minimalist and likes things very precise and composed, rather than lots of background fluff, so it was a great jumping-off point for us.”

Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar remember vividly the unusual circumstances of their first conversation with Tim Burton. The filmmaker, who they hoped they could convince to join their show, was piping in from a garden full of “life-size” dinosaur models at his U.K. home. “He was wandering around his dinosaur garden talking to us on FaceTime about his love of Wednesday Addams, and the idea that the script spoke to him in terms of being the ultimate outsider,” remembers Millar of this virtual meeting in 2020 with Burton. Just a week before, the duo were doubtful Burton would even meet with them. They had already written the entire season with the help of a pandemic-era virtual writers room, but wanted Burton’s expertise and special touches. “We were told by everyone, ‘Tim’s never done television. We don’t even know if he’ll read it,’ ” recalls Gough.

Thanks to a crowded fantasy/sci-fi Emmys field, some of the best new shows of the season steeped in fantasy, sci-fi, or horror are opting instead to compete in contemporary craft categories to avoid direct competition.
These include “The Last of Us,” HBO’s riveting video game adaptation of a post-apocalyptic America with a zombie-like vibe, “Mrs. Davis,” Peacock’s glorious genre-bending adventure, “Wednesday,” Netflix’s “Addams Family” spin-off about monstrous teens, and “Dead Ringers,” Prime Video’s update of the David Cronenberg body horror thriller, starring Rachel Weisz as the gender-flipped twin gynecologists.
However, this strategy of going contemporary is not unique. Just last season, Netflix entered its survival thriller juggernaut, “Squid Game,” in contemporary categories for production design and costume design, and came away with the Emmy for the former. And, although it didn’t pan out, the imaginatively retro “Severance” also competed for contemporary production design.

Illuminative, the Native woman-led social justice organization, has announced the launch of the Indigenous House at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Indigenous House will open its doors on Main Street in Park City, Utah, where it will spotlight the creativity of Native peoples, unveil new research on Native voices in media and provide a space for community members and allies to explore issues that impact Native peoples.
“We are beyond thrilled to open the doors to the Indigenous House for the very first time at Sundance Film Festival,” Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and executive director of Illuminative, said in a statement. “Storytelling is a powerful force for change, and we’ve seen firsthand how impactful Native representation is. The entertainment industry has always been one of the biggest perpetrators of our erasure, but Native peoples have flipped the script and are breaking barriers and making incredible strides in representation.

To revive the Addams Family for Tim Burton, production designer Mark Scruton’s brief was very clear. “We were not trying to copy anything else — it’s not a sequel, it’s not a reinvention, it’s a new thing,” he says. Scruton went back to cartoonist Charles Addams’ source material to evoke Wednesday’s world and, together with Burton and an illustrator, started by sketching out mirthless Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and bubbly Enid’s (Emma Myers) dorm room, which would set the tone for everything else.
“It is a micro of everything. The difference between [boarding school] Nevermore and [the small town] Jericho is the same as between Enid and Wednesday,” Scruton explains. “The window grew from wanting to give a strong graphic bond to the fact that the two were complete opposites. I wanted one half stained glass and one half completely monochrome. But we had...

There are countless teases and references throughout the eight-part series including teasers in the opening credits, the town of Jericho, where the “normies” live, shopfronts such as the florist, cobbler and thrift store straight out of Charles Addams’ original cartoons, plus a shrunken head in Principal Weems’ office, a reference to “Beetlejuice.”

From the 1960s sitcom to the Barry Sonnenfeld films to MGM’s animated iterations, “The Addams Family” has been a ripe property for adaptation over the decades. But when preparing for “Wednesday,” Tim Burton’s live-action Netflix series that focuses on the family’s woeful teenage daughter, production designer Mark Scruton turned away from screens and referenced the original source material.
“I deliberately didn’t watch the old movies, but I did go back to the original Chas Addams cartoons,” he says, referring to the single-panel drawings that began appearing in The New Yorker in 1938.
“With Tim, visually, he’s very pared back,” Scruton explains. He acknowledges that Burton is known for grandiose and elaborate images, but emphasizes that in his films, “there’s nothing in the frame which isn’t meant to be there. And the cartoons are the same. Nothing wasted.”

Designing and constructing sets from scratch is just half of a production designer’s job. Depending on the project, there’s also scouting for location shooting. And sometimes, you can’t shoot as is, like on “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
“It’s all fantasy, so we can’t go down the street in Auckland and find a place to shoot,” Ramsey Avery tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel roundtable with Matthew Davies (“Five Days at Memorial”), Mark Scruton (“Wednesday”) and Richard Bloom (“Welcome to Chippendales”). “We ended learning how to make a sheep paddock outside of Auckland look like something else. What we would look for is a couple things: one, what are the bones? Does it have really good graphic shapes in terms of what we’re trying to have this scene say? Where’s the light coming...

Netflix’s “Wednesday” is set in Vermont, but the show did not shoot there. After scouting locations in Toronto, the supernatural series based on the “Addams Family” character, ultimately filmed halfway around the world in Romania, where production designer Mark Scruton found a castle that caught the eye of executive producer and director Tim Burton.
“We started in Toronto, we ended up in Romania. We looked at a lot of different castles and palaces and environments to base it on. We ended up with Cantacuzino, which is the one you see in the show, and really there was not a lot of it left by the time we finished adding and enhancing and moving around with it. We used the location for about three or four days,” Scruton tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “There was a central...

“Pennyworth” premiered on Epix over the summer, flashing back to the formative years of future “Batman” butler extraordinaire Alfred Pennyworth (played here by Jack Bannon). That DC Comics connection makes it one of the highest profile shows this year for the premium cable outlet, and it has been renewed for a second season. But it’s not the first “Batman” prequel to grace TV screens. Fox’s “Gotham,” which recently wrapped after five seasons, explored the title city from the point of view of future commissioner Jim Gordon. Could “Pennyworth” follow in its awards footsteps?
“Gotham” was never nominated for Best Drama Series by major industry groups, but its technical accomplishments were frequently recognized. The series premiered in the fall of 2014, and in its first awards season it earned one bid apiece from the Art Directors Guild and the Motion Picture Sound Editors, plus two nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers...

In traditional filmmaking, once a script is written, the director and department heads break it down and figure out the costs and logistics of production. But if the screenwriter collaborates during the creative process with key crew members, the entire production can benefit.
Such collaboration offers the prospect of help on many fronts. For example, rather than pore over details of period dress, a writer can talk to a costume designer, who can aid in the research. Or, if the script calls for a spaceship to land on an alien planet, the writer can confab with a production designer who’s well versed in extraterrestrial visuals.
One director who’s a big proponent of such teamwork is Steven Spielberg. Mark Scruton, who served as supervising art director on Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” credits the director with communicating exactly what he wanted and instructing his key crew to thrash it out.
