First entry in the Girl Boss series, “Queen Bee's Counterattack” seems to embody all the elements of both the series, and of the Japsploitation of the 70s, with fanservice being the key word here.
The story takes place in the 1970s, where Reiko is the head of Athena, an all-girls gang, trying to survive among the yakuza, motorcycle gangs, and essentially the world, following a set of simple rules, with the most important being not falling in love with a particular man. Reiko, as much as the rest of the girls, frequently have sex with men, but they keep the rule intact, while their leader's ways and particularly her will to help any of the group in trouble have inspired unwavering loyalty by the rest of the members. The appearance of a newcomer, Mayumi, however, as much as of a previous boss that has just been released from prison, Jun,...

Chris Rudz's “All the Songs We Never Sang” is a film, much like its lead, that is full of promise, though gets somewhat distracted along the way, resulting in a more conventional summer excursion than it could have been. Such is the way with life.
“All the Songs We Never Sang” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
Natsumi (Miru Nagase) is a teen who has seemingly hopped on a train and run away from her Tokyo life, somehow making her way to her aunt's house on the remote island of Kojima. But arriving unannounced, she is met with a cold shoulder by her mum's estranged sister, Reiko (Junko Kano). Eventually, taking some pity on the young woman, she takes her in, promising to show her the ways of ama, diving for pearls, if she gets up early enough.
Gradually, Natsumi becomes part of the team who...

It was only a brief period, but it surely had its consequences, as we can see in the highly influential cinema produced by Art Theatre Guild and its many directors. One of them, Yasuzo Masumura directed over 40 films during his career and was once regarded as one of the most promising talents of this new generation of filmmakers, even though many of his works remain underappreciated (and under-seen) in his home country and beyond its borders, for example,...
