Fans everywhere are cheering for Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. The internet has been buzzing about the couple's engagement and as expected, so are they. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, author and pastor Rick Warren tweeted a celebratory, "Congratulations @gwenstefani and @blakeshelton. I'm happy for you both!" to which Blake retweeted and added, "Thank you sir. We are extremely excited!" Earlier in the day, the news broke that, after nearly five years of dating, the two award-winning singers are engaged. "@blakeshelton yes please! When I was in my early 20s, I attended Knott's Scary Farm in Buena Park, CA and lapped up every second of it. I loved that the mist hung densely over the walkways and clung to the trees. I loved the costumes and the grisly makeup. I loved laughing and cowering with my friends in the dark, knowing we were safe even as our wits were being shattered around every corner. I don't specifically recall any attractions themed around a psychiatric hospital, but even if there had been, I wouldn't have noticed them. Like most people, I never thought twice about horror imagery that exploited our culture's fear and anxiety around the subject of mental illness. And that was nearly a decade before I lost my twin brother to suicide. When I read today that Knott's -- in addition to two other theme parks owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company...

So inept a film, so bland and monotonous, that it fails even to serve as the blatant ad for the certain Christian motivational book it would appear to be. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

True story: In 2005, recovering drug addict Ashley Smith was held hostage in her own Atlanta apartment for seven hours by Brian Nichols, who had earlier escaped from the courthouse where he was on trial for rape; in the course of his escape, he murdered several people, including the judge presiding in his case. Afterward, once Nichols had been recaptured, Smith’s story went viral because she said she’d read to her abductor from the Christian motivational book The Purpose Driven Life,...

David Oyelowo and Kate Mara bring substance to this true story of an addict who turns to God – but the film will win no converts
Heralded as the moment when faith-based film-making gets gritty, this adaptation of Ashley Smith’s nonfiction book Unlikely Angel is a rather unremarkable account of redemption through crisis. Kate Mara plays Smith, the struggling addict held hostage by David Oyelowo’s murderous escapee Brian Nichols, with only a copy of Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life to give her strength. Committed performances from the two leads provide ballast, although the inevitable Oprah coda feels a little too much like a sales pitch.

There is a moral somewhere in Captive but it is hard to work out what it is. The message seems to be that if you're a meth addict and are held hostage by an escaped killer, you should give him your drugs but not take them yourself – either that or you should read him extracts from The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren, a religious self-help book.

Oyelowo follows his Selma star turn in Jerry Jameson’s sluggish drama about a man on the run who takes a meth addict hostage
Martin Luther King: tough act to follow. After David Oyelowo’s commanding Selma turn, here’s an unpersuasive attempt to bolster the actor’s multiplex profile: a threadbare based-on-true-events thriller that unpacks, in utterly functional manner, the mystery of Brian Nichols, an escaped convict driven to take recovering addict Kate Mara hostage. TV veteran Jerry Jameson’s sluggish direction becomes no more animated once the cops arrive; everyone’s left sitting around waiting for revelation or redemption, while the uninflected quotation of religiose self-help guru Rick Warren reaches out towards the lucrative faith-movie demographic. The actors are committed – Mara, generally waif-like, appears frail indeed – but there’s barely anything worth committing to.

This was supposed to be the big fall kickoff weekend at the multiplex. There was the sequel in a successful young-adult fantasy/sci-fi franchise and an A-lister starring in the first major Oscar hopeful of the season.
But two surprising things happened: "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" opened with $30.3 million, less than its predecessor, and Johnny Depp's "Black Mass" did slightly better than expected -- despite a "B" CinemaScore from audiences.
Was everyone too busy watching football this weekend, or arguing in coffee shops about Thursday's Republican presidential debate, or planning the last blowout barbecue before autumn officially arrives this week? Or was it just that, despite the hype, the studios by and large failed to make a compelling case for why people should come back to the theaters this weekend?
Jake Gyllenhaal's "Everest" premiered in fifth place with an estimated $7.6 million, but that's actually pretty good for...

On subject matter alone, Captive is a pretty ballsy film. It’s based on a notorious Atlanta incident from ten years ago that some will recall: Convicted rapist Brian Nichols shot up a courtroom and fled authorities, then held young, widowed, meth-addict single mother Ashley Smith captive in her home. But after a long night in which Smith read to Nichols from Rick Warren’s religious self-help book The Purpose-Driven Life and talked to him about God, the situation ended without further violence, and Nichols surrendered to the cops. So, here we have a kidnapping-thriller setup, but it really turns out to be a chamber piece focused on two people confined to a small home. What’s more, it de-escalates: It’s not about a situation growing more desperate, but rather about two people coming together on a question of religious faith — and not just any old religious faith, but an Evangelical,...

As bland as its title, Captive is an indifferent home invasion thriller in which a drug-addicted single mom is held hostage by a desperate man who’d just murdered four people. Hostage movies follow such age-old patterns that it’s rare to be surprised by one and Captive is no exception. Occasionally the genre will be transformed by brilliant filmmaking, as it was in something like The Desperate Hours or Dog Day Afternoon. Not this time. The true subject should have been given energy but all I felt while watching Captive was a big yawn.
Taking place over a single day, Captive closely follows an event that took place in Atlanta in 2005. Brian Nichols (played by David Oyelowo) was on trial for rape when he overpowered and beat a female guard, then took her gun. He calmly walked into a courtroom and fatally shot a judge and a court reporter...

Update: Warner Bros. is reporting Black Mass took in an estimated $1.4 million from preshows on Thursday night. The original forecast article follows. This is a fascinating weekend. Two major titles are vying for the attention of two different audiences and are looking at a possible battle for the #1 position. Add to that Universal's premium large format-only release of Everest and we may have a lot to discuss come this Sunday. The most likely film to take the top spot is the young adult sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. The first film opened this same weekend a year ago with $32.5 million and an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. The film had strong legs domestically, not dropping more than 50% until its tenth weekend in release. Early reviews for the sequel, however, haven't necessarily been kind. MetaCritic scores put the sequel at a "40" as of this posting, fifteen points below the...

In March 2005, Ashley Smith was held hostage in her apartment by Brian Nichols, an escaped killer hell-bent on seeing his newborn son. As Nichols kept Smith captive for seven hours, the pair slowly came to a crossroads between hope and despair. Smith had bonded with Nichols by reading aloud Rick Warren’s best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life.
The new film, Captive, based on Smith’s account of the ordeal in her book Unlikely Angel, tells the story of how this one-time meth addict overcame her vices to survive through the worst night of her life and forge a new, productive path for herself. The film features standout performances from Kate Mara as Ashley Smith and David Oyelowo as Brian Nichols.

At the age of 24, David Oyelowo brought his regal bearing to the stage, where he became the first black actor to portray King Henry VI in The Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2001 productions of Shakespeare’s trilogy of plays about the king. More recently, he has made a name for himself by taking on American film roles. He played Martin Luther King Jr. in the Oscar-nominated film Selma, a civil rights activist in The Butler, a villain in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, and a member of the Tuskeegee Airmen in Red Tails.
In his most recent film Captive, Oyelowo shows his range by taking on another true life character. Brian Nichols is known for his escape and killing spree in the Atlanta, Georgia area in 2005.
