The new episode of the celebrity chat show ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ will see actor and comedian Sunil Grover asking Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma for a place in the cricket team as the 11th batsman.
This Saturday, host Kapil Sharma and his entire team welcomed cricketers Rohit and Shreyas Iyer.
The camaraderie between the two players was quite evident as they did a lot of ‘taang-khichayi’ throughout the episode and shared anecdotes from on and off the field.
The conversations took a whole new turn when Sunil turned up as engineer Chumbak Mittal and livened the ‘mahol’. He straight up asked Rohit for a place in the Indian cricket team, but was humble enough to add that he doesn’t want to be the opening batsman.
To this Rohit retorted with ‘Opening toh Bhool hi Jao yaar!’

Mumbai, Nov 19 (Ians) Even as Team India finds itself locked in a nail-biting battle of wills against Australia, diehard fans of Rohit Sharma & Co are turning to Kabir Khan’s Ranvir Singh-starrer ’83’ for solace. After all, back in 1983, Kapil’s Devils had put up an eminently beatable score of 183 in their surprise appearance at Lord’s in the Odi Cricket World Cup final against the then cricket superpower West Indies, yet they came home with the prized trophy.
Pan to Ahmedabad 2023, where we just saw the Australians mount an asphyxiating bowling attack on Team India, restricting them to 240 runs.
Forty years ago, as a generation learnt from ’83’, India too had lost the toss, and was asked to bat first by the West Indies, who bowled out their less-fancied rivals for 183, sending Indian fans into a sulking vortex, just like after the first innings of the ongoing Word Cup Final.

Cinema and cricket are India’s biggest obsessions. The two often are found at crossroads as a lot of current and former members of team India are the spouses to Bollywood actresses. But, what happens when cinema and cricket are pitted against each other?
The recently held World Cup semi-final between the Indian squad and New Zealand somewhat solves this conundrum as the match fell concurrent to one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars Salman Khan’s film’s theatrical run.
Salman’s ‘Tiger 3’, which also stars Katrina Kaif, debuted in theatres on Sunday on the occasion of Diwali on the day when India, after solidifying its spot in the semi-final took on Netherlands in a match which was a formality. Pallekele, Sep 4 (Ians) Unbeaten fifties by captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill powered India to the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup with a 10-wicket thrashing of Nepal in their Group A match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
After Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj picked three wickets apiece while Aasif Sheikh and Sompal Kami played gusty knocks in guiding Nepal to a competitive 230, the rain stopped the proceedings for two hours. Pallekele, Sep 4 (Ians) Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj picked three-wicket hauls as Aasif Sheikh and Sompal Kami played gusty knocks to guide Nepal to a competitive total of 230 against India in the Asia Cup Group A match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
On a two-paced pitch that aided spinners more, Nepal put up a much-improved batting display after being skittled out for 104 against Pakistan last week. Aasif, the wicketkeeper-batter, was brilliant in his 58 off 97 balls, laced with eight fours.
After an hour’s rain interruption, Kami during his 56-ball 48 struck a few shots to take Nepal past 200. Nepal were also aided by some erratic bowling from India, who bowled too many short and back-of-length deliveries.
There was also very sloppy work from India in fielding, leading to three catches being dropped in the first five overs and plenty of misfields happening throughout the innings.

New Delhi, Sep 3 (Ians) Former Indian cricketers Mohammed Kaif and Gautam Gambhir engaged in a heated discussion over Ishan Kishan and Kl Rahul about who is the ideal candidate for the No. 5 batting position following latter’s impressive 82-run knock against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.
During the discussion on Star Sports, Kaif expressed the opinion that, despite Ishan’s impressive half-century against Pakistan, he should make room for Kl Rahul in the lineup. In contrast, Gambhir argued that current form holds greater significance than a player’s reputation or name.
“Kl Rahul is a proven match-winner. At No. 5, his numbers are fabulous. So Rahul Dravid knows, there is that clarity in his mind that…remember, Mohammed Shami was dropped today. So, when Kl Rahul is fit again, he will be playing in the XI and Ishan Kishan will have to wait for his next opportunity,” said Kaid.
“Ishan is doing all that he needs.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah made a return to India’s playing eleven in ODIs as captain Rohit Sharma has won the toss and elected to bat first against arch-rivals Pakistan in their first Group A match of Asia Cup at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
In the run-up to the highly-anticipated clash, rain loomed as a large threat. Ahead of the toss, slight drizzle meant the ground was covered. But 13 minutes ahead of the toss, rain stopped and covers were taken off.

Pallekele, Sept 1 (Ians) With the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh game of the Asia Cup in the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium offering a lot of help to the bowlers, India captain Rohit Sharma stated that the side is keen to take the attacking route, but wants to read situations and circumstances for applying themselves a little longer in the 50-over format.
India will be opening their Asia Cup campaign against archrivals Pakistan on Saturday, and Rohit, along with other Indian batters like Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be tested by Pakistan’s bowling line-up, chiefly their pace bowling line-up of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf.
“All sorts of combinations available looking at how the game was played yesterday. We saw a bit of swing, spin and everything and that will always challenge the batters. Luckily, we have got experience in our batting line-up,...

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sept 1 (Ians) In the cool and serene surroundings of Sri Lanka, fans from around the world will witness another chapter being added to the India-Pakistan rivalry when the two neighbours clash in a Group A match of the Asia Cup at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
In India’s opening match of the Asia Cup, they will be without wicketkeeper-batter K.L. Rahul due to a niggle unrelated to his right thigh injury, which has kept him out of action after May 1 this year. Though they have a like-to-like reserve player in Sanju Samson, it seems that Ishan Kishan could bat in the middle-order to fill in for Rahul’s absence.
Though Kishan hit three consecutive fifties in ODIs against West Indies in July, the top three of Shubman Gill, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been set for a long time. Especially with...

New Delhi, Aug 31 (Ians) Team India is well back with its best bowling squad ahead of the Asia Cup 2023. The Men-In-Blue will play its first match against Pakistan on Saturday.
Indian seamer Mohammad Shami on Thursday expressed the stakes that big tournaments hold.
“For big games, there is always preparation as we have practiced in the training camp. I don’t think we have to analyse too much into the situation, we have the skill and the bowling lineup, so we don’t have to think too much.
“But I have to say one thing, whenever one-day matches come, there has to be focus. So to be focused and to have proper planning,” he told Star Sports.
Shami emphasised the significance of retaining focus and adhering to well-structured planning throughout one-day matches with a constant belief in the team’s ability and bowling selection. Shami also considers how important individuals...

New Delhi, Aug 27 (Ians) Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden called out his Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023 and made some big calls. Hayden added wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson to the squad and affronted Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Talking to Star Sports, Hayden said, “The job which he hates the most is selecting any squad for the tournament. In the Indian context, I would love to see Sanju Samson in the squad. Also India needs more all-rounders than batters so Axar Patel will be a better choice than Tilak Verma.”
The 15-member Indian squad picked by Hayden follows: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Kl Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan and Axar Patel.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) Right-handed batter K.L. Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, happening from August 30 to September 17, after recovering in time from a right thigh and back injury respectively.
In a press conference held in New Delhi on Monday, India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar announced the 17-member Asia Cup squad, handing young middle-order left-handed batter Tilak Varma a maiden Odi call-up. Varma has so far been capped in T20Is but is yet to make his Odi debut.
Rahul has been out of action since injuring his right thigh during his team Lucknow Super Giants’ match in Ipl 2023 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 1, when he was chasing the ball to stop a boundary in the second over.
It was later revealed on May 5 that Rahul has suffered a significant tear to a tendon in the right thigh and underwent surgery.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that one major difference in the build-up of the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup as compared to the preparation undertaken by the 2011 tournament-winning team, has been the significantly lesser time of playing matches as a cohesive unit.
After the end of 2007 Odi World Cup and before the start of the 2011 edition, India had played 118 ODIs. With the 2023 World Cup being just over two months away, India have played just 57 matches after the end of the 2019 edition in England. Moreover, India has played 42 ODIs since the start of 2021, with 44 players being tried out, highlighting that a settled combination hasn’t been achieved yet.

Port of Spain, July 24 (Ians) In the ongoing tour of the West Indies, Mohammed Siraj had to step up to be the leader of the Indian fast-bowling attack. On Fay Four, where there was nothing for the bowlers to extract from a slow pitch at Queen’s Park Oval, Siraj returned with his career-best figures of five for 60 to give India a healthy 183-run lead.
Siraj’s scalps for his second five-wicket haul in Tests included Joshua da Silva, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel. Siraj mixed his inswingers, outswingers and wobble-seam deliveries to good effect with the second new ball to bring a swift end to the West Indies innings.
The fast bowler pointed out that it was not easy for him to succeed on a placid pitch. “First of all, this performance was really good because it’s not easy to take a five-fer on such a flat wicket.

Roseau (Dominica), July 15 (Ians) India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey admitted that ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been missed by the team a lot in the last one to one-and-a-half years while adding that breaks will be given to pacers, with youngsters to be given chances for creating a bench strength.
Bumrah last played for India in T20Is against Australia in September 2022, before suffering a recurrence of the back injury, which has kept him out of action since then. In April, Bumrah underwent a back surgery and is currently doing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (Nca) in Bengaluru, in order to be fit in time for Odi World Cup in October-November.
“Injuries are a very big concern. If we look at the last 1-1.5 years, Bumrah is one player we missed a lot. As of now, there haven’t been any discussions on who will play white ball or red ball.

London, June 10 (Ians) Australia looked to be in a prime position to win the World Test Championship (Wtc) Final when they declared on 270/8 and set India a daunting target of 444, something which has never happened in the successful fourth innings chase in history of Test cricket
But Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane put together a solid unbeaten 71-run partnership on yet another day of gripping Test cricket action and took India to 164/3 at stumps on Day Four, keeping India alive in the chase with 280 runs needed on the final day of the match on Sunday.
On a pitch that has flattened out and looks devoid of demons in terms of movement and bounce, Kohli was in fantastic touch to be 44 not out off just 60 balls. On the other hand, Rahane is unconquered on 20 as the duo set up the match towards an exciting finish, while Australia will be aiming to...

On Thursday, they posted 469 in first innings, thanks to Travis Head’s 163 and Steve Smith’s 121, his 31st Test hundred along with Alex Carey’s cameo of 48.
The potent Aussie bowling unit used fuller deliveries and bounce in the pitch to good effect to leave India on 151/5 in 38 overs at stumps, with Australia still leading by 318 runs. All of Australia’s five bowlers took a wicket each as India’s top four batters failed to pass the 15 run mark in front of accurate and relentless lines and lengths.
A 71-run partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja kept India afloat till off-spinner Nathan Lyon took the latter out 15 minutes away from stumps, as Australia dominated another day of proceedings in the marquee clash, as 12 wickets fell on day two,...

London, June 8 (Ians) Pat Cummins and Scott Boland dismissed openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in quick succession to leave India at 37/2 in 10 overs at Tea after Mohammed Siraj picked a four-wicket haul to lead a solid fightback for his team and bowl out Australia for 469 in their first innings on day two of the World Test Championship final at The Oval, here on Thursday.
For India, still trailing by 432 runs, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli were unbeaten on 3 and 4 respectively at Tea. A lot hinges on the highly-experienced duo to lead India’s charge with the bat in a crucial final session on Day 2.
India made a positive start with Rohit pulling a short ball off Mitchell Starc while squeezing a drive off him to take two fours. Gill played a glorious drive off Cummins through the gap for four on the very first ball he faced and went...

London, June 8 (Ians) Mohammed Siraj picked a four-wicket haul to lead a solid fightback for his team on day two of the World Test Championship final and bowl out Australia for 469 in 121.3 overs of their first innings but Pat Cummins and Scott Boland then attacked stumps relentlessly while bowling fuller to dismiss Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in quick succession to leave India at 37/2 in 10 overs at Tea, here on Thursday.

London, June 8 (Ians) Mohammed Siraj picked a four-wicket haul to lead a solid fightback from India on day two of the World Test Championship final and bowl out Australia for 469 in 121.3 overs of their first innings at The Oval, here on Thursday.
Australia began day two from their overnight score of 327/3 with Steve Smith making 121, his 31st Test century while Travis Head crossed 150 for the fourth time in his career to top-score with 163 as the duo shared a massive 285-run stand for the fourth wicket after being reduced to 76/3.
But India, who took only three wickets on a lacklustre day one, made a spirited fightback to pick the rest of seven wickets to bowl out Australia for 469 on a pitch, where there is some movement and variable bounce on offer.
A persistent Siraj was the pick of bowlers for India with 4/108, also becoming the 42nd bowler from the country to scalp 50 wickets in Tests.

London, June 8 (Ians) After taking only three wickets on day one of World Test Championship final at The Oval, India staged a spirited fightback in the first session of second day’s play with four scalps, including of centurions Travis Head and Steve Smith, as Australia reached 422/7 in 109 overs at lunch, here on Thursday.
Though Australia are still ahead in the final as they amassed 95 runs in the morning session, they weren’t able to dominate thoroughly thanks to the Indian bowling line-up sticking to their plans of bowling on good areas.
India would want for their bowlers to continue doing the same in the second session on a pitch, where some deliveries misbehaved as sun shined bright, with Alex Carey and captain Pat Cummins unbeaten on 22 and 2 respectively at lunch.
The day began with Mohammed Siraj bowling two successive half-volleys to Smith, who flicked dazzlingly on both deliveries to reach his 31st Test hundred,...

London, June 8 (Ians) Australia’s veteran left-handed opener David Warner feels he wasn’t challenged enough on his front-foot defence by a lacklustre and erratic Indian bowling attack on Day One of the World Test Championship (Wtc) Final at The Oval.
Warner looked in great touch after surviving a probing first hour, particularly from Mohammed Shami operating from around the wicket angle, though he lost Usman Khawaja to Mohammed Siraj for a ten-ball duck.
He hammered Umesh Yadav for a drive through for four, before carving the pacer for four offside boundaries in the 15th over. But he fell just before the lunch break to Shardul Thakur for 43, gloving a pull behind to the keeper.
“Only thing I felt as a batsman (was) I wasn’t challenged enough on my front-foot defence so it was okay to leave on length then try to put some pressure on,” said Warner in...

London, June 7 (Ians) Travis Head and Steve Smith took full advantage of a lacklustre Indian bowling line-up to stitch a mammoth 251-run unbeaten stand for the fourth wicket to put Australia in the driver’s seat by putting 327/3 on the board at the stumps on Day 1 of World Test Championship final at The Oval, here on Wednesday.
The day began with India bowling first, under overcast skies and fielding a four-man fast-bowling attack, with Ravichandran Ashwin’s exclusion becoming a huge talking point. They succeeded initially by reducing Australia to 76/3.
But Head, who was dropped from the playing eleven for Nagpur Test earlier this year, came out all guns blazing to lead Australia’s counter-attack and dishing out yet another memorable knock to bail his team out of a tough situation as Australia ended the day on a strong position.
As the sun came out and pitch became good to bat on,...

London, June 7 (Ians) Middle-order batter Travis Head led a superb counterattack with an unbeaten 60 to power Australia to 170/3 in 51 overs at Tea against India on day one of World Test Championship final at The Oval, here on Wednesday.
At Tea, Steve Smith was 33 not out and gave Head company in an unbroken 94-run stand for fourth wicket as 97 runs came off the second session.
Head was also aided in his free-flowing stroke play by Indian bowlers, giving him width and overpitched deliveries on pads for him to hit ten boundaries in his unbeaten 75-ball stay.
India fetched success immediately in the start of the session as Mohammed Shami’s fuller delivery from over the wicket came back in and castled Marnus Labuschagne through the gate on an attempted drive.
But from there, they were kept on bay by Head, who hit four boundaries off the fast bowlers in the first 12 balls he faced,...

It is not merely his ranking, but the fact that Ashwin is an all-wicket exponent and therefore potent even on pitches favouring faster bowlers.
India selected a side virtually for the first session of the match. The weather forecast was sunshine for the greater part of the game. Indeed, the second hour of the opening morning was sunny; and easier for batting than at the start of the Australian innings.
Once you win the toss with four quick bowlers in your pick, inserting the opposition is a no-brainer. Predictably, that is what Indian captain Rohit Sharma did. The Indians perhaps got carried away by the grass on the pitch and the temporarily overcast sky. Such conditions can be deceptive. While the track undoubtedly looked green, it was dry and there was no residual moisture underneath. This was because London, after a wet spring, hasn’t experienced much rain in the past 2-3 weeks.

London, June 7 (Ians) India and Australia teams as well as match officials were seen wearing black armbands ahead of the start of 2023 World Test Championship final at The Oval to pay respect to victims of the Odisha train tragedy, which happened earlier this month.
Before the national anthems, everyone at the ground offered a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the tragic train accident which happened near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Balasore district of Odisha.
Last Friday, 288 people died and more than 1000 were injured in a collision of three trains – two passengers and one goods, seen as one of the worst train disasters in India in nearly two decades.
“The team mourns the deaths and offers its deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those who tragically lost their lives,” said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) in a statement.
