[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Breeders” Season 4, Episode 10, “No Matter What: Part Two,” the series finale.]
Typically, when a parent is caught screaming at their child, it’s not the errant adult who needs comforting. But “Breeders” — the FX series about childcare’s unexpected, even unbearable burdens — knows that good moms and dads can have bad moments. Martin Freeman, Chris Addison, and Simon Blackwell’s dark comedy offers itself, time and again, as a shoulder to cry on for caregivers who’ve given so much, they’re no longer themselves. It does so again during Episode 10, “No Matter What,” wrapping its figurative arms around the infuriated father. Well, fathers.
In the series finale, Luke (Oscar Kennedy) is at his wit’s end. He’s been traveling back and forth between Manchester and London, the former for a coveted music production course at the Manchester Institute and the latter to see his girlfriend, Maya (Deepica Stephen), and their newborn son,...

In its fourth and final season, FX’s “Breeders” is ending exactly the way its three creators always wanted: with brutal honesty.
“We did always want it to be honest, that’s for sure,” Martin Freeman told TheWrap in an interview conducted ahead of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. “From me, Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison’s first conversations about this show — when we were making what it would be six or seven years ago — it was basically a collection of all the things that were difficult about being parents.”
Freeman likened those initial conversations to a “comedy therapy session,” adding that he always wanted the show to be “fairly unflinching” and “not too pretty.”
According to the co-creator, executive producer and star, “very, very early on” the plan was to follow the series’ central family from when the kids were very young through college age. “We weren’t exactly...

Exclusive: Avenue 5‘s space voyage may be coming to an end. Season 2 of Armando Iannucci’s space comedy, delayed by the pandemic, has not been scheduled yet. I hear it will likely launch in the fall and is expected to be the series’ last. A rep for HBO declined comment.
This is not surprising. Season 1 of Avenue 5, Iannucci’s followup series to the Emmy-winning Veep, premiered in January 2020 and was renewed for a second season in February of that year, just a couple of weeks before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Filming on the new season, delayed by Covid, finally got underway in August 2021 and wrapped in November.
Given the time that has passed, the options on the cast, led by Hugh Laurie, came up, and the actors were released, sources tell Deadline. Some of them have moved on, signing as series regulars on new shows.

His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

Like the one before it, 2021 was a year in which many of us saw more of our TVs than of our friends and loved ones. It was lucky then, that there was so bloody much of the stuff, despite the pandemic’s best efforts to shut it all down. They might have been delayed, they might have been curtailed, but they weren’t stopped. Returning British TV shows returned like spring lambs, gambolling over the horizon right into your living room.
There was comedy and drama, as well as crime thrillers by the lorryload, and sci-fi and fantasy coming by the… much smaller lorryload.
A Discovery of Witches Season 2 (January)
Based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy about the forbidden love between a powerful witch and a centuries-old vampire, A Discovery Of Witches debuted on Sky in autumn 2018 (read our reviews here) and was renewed for series two and three almost straight away.

Breeders is a dark comedy. But towards the end of the second season of the Martin Freeman- and Daisy Haggard-fronted parenting series, it gets even darker.
Season 2 of the FX and Sky series starts with their children, Luke (now played by Alex Eastwood) and Ava (Eve Prenelle), six years older than they were in Season 1, thus serving up brand-new parenting challenges for Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally.
Luke’s increasing anxiety and Ava’s growing independence added some new and uncharted complications into the existing chaotic mix of stretched resources, lack of time and the fine art of winging it while looking like you know what you’re doing.
Paul’s parents, Jackie and Jim (Joanna Bacon and Alun Armstrong), are older too, as is Ally’s mother Leah (Stella Gonet), leading Paul and Ally to find that they now have to parent the generation above...

FX renewed its parenting comedy “Breeders” last week. The second season, which aired this spring, jumped ahead six years with new actors portraying the children of the characters Paul and Ally Worsley played by Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard. Co-creator, executive producer and occasional director Chris Addison explains in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “When we originally sat and thought of what this show would be, we’d always imagined that we would tell about three stages of parenting, partly because we wanted the show to be about parenting as an experience and parenting changes so much as children grow.”
Co-creator, executive producer, head writer and showrunner Simon Blackwell reveals as he begins to write the next season that they might go back on this intention, due to cast additions of Alex Eastwood and Eve Prenelle as children Luke and Ava. He explains, “It absolutely...

“Breeders” has been renewed for Season 3 at FX.
The comedy series starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard wrapped up its second season on May 17. Season 3 will debut in 2022.
“Delighted that we’ve got three seasons,” said series showrunner and co-creator Simon Blackwell. “One more and it’s a pizza. This is such a superb team to work with, and it’s a pleasure and a privilege to make the show. I can’t wait to see what terrible and brilliant but let’s face it mainly terrible things will happen to the Worsley family in the next 10 episodes.”
“Breeders” explores the parental paradox that you’d happily die for your children, but quite often also want to kill them. In Season 2, Luke (Alex Eastwood) is now 13 years old and Ava (Eve Prenelle) is 10, serving up brand new parenting challenges for Paul (Freeman) and Ally (Haggard). Warning: contains spoilers for the Breeders season two finale.
Philip Larkin put it memorably, but there’s no need to take his word for it. We all know that characterful noses aren’t the only things carried down the generations. There are also the traits that no parent means to pass on: insecurities and neuroses absorbed in daily doses from age zero to left-home, that leach out involuntarily to our own kids when the time comes. For Martin Freeman’s character Paul in FX/Sky One comedy Breeders, it’s his anger and anxiety, inherited by son Luke (Alex Eastwood), and threatening to break their relationship.
The Breeders season two cliffhanger sees Paul voluntarily move out of the family home because Luke refuses to live with him. Partner Ally (Daisy Haggard) doesn’t want Paul to go, daughter Ava (Eve Prenelle) doesn’t want him to go, and Paul definitely doesn’t want to go,...

The first scene in Season 1 of Breeders arrived fully formed for Martin Freeman courtesy of a dream, he said during the FX series’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event.
In his imagined experience, Freeman paced the stairs of his home on the way to admonish his children, who were refusing to sleep. Trying to contain his simmering anger, Freeman attempted to talk himself down, or at the very least, persuade himself to keep a cool head. Inevitably, however, as he reached the bedroom, he unleashed hell.
The FX comedy plays this out, almost beat-by-beat, as the besieged Paul wrangles with his rage. It sets the tone for the first two seasons of the Avalon-produced comedy, which was conceived over therapeutic lunches between Freeman and writers Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison, during which they ruminated on the darker side of parenting.

Season 2 of “Back” has a great runner. The first in the comedy series’ new batch of episodes, returning after a years-long absence and now airing stateside on IFC, sees the staff and patrons of the local John Barleycorn having to deal with a trendy neighborhood newcomer. “P:ub,” the newly-arrived drinking establishment, has all the trappings of a deconstructed brewery, all the way down to a name that people aren’t 100 percent sure how to pronounce.
The sprinklings of people invoking “Puh-uhb” in and around the John Barleycorn is the kind of simple Season 2 joke that’s “Back” in a nutshell. Pronouncing that name becomes more a dejected statement of fact, the kind of thing that writer Simon Blackwell and stars Robert Webb and David Mitchell have turned into their own kind of magic trick over their multi-decade run together. When an individual is cast against type, the results are always interesting. Armando Iannucci has made a reputation as a writer and director of cutting-edge contemporary comedies, from BBC’s “I’m Alan Partridge” to HBO’s “Veep,” and including his Oscar-nominated work as a writer of 2010’s “In the Loop.”
So he may seem an unlikely match for Charles Dickens, but Searchlight’s “The Personal History of David Copperfield” turns out to be a perfect vehicle for him.
“I was re-reading ‘David Copperfield’ about 10 years ago and was struck at how very funny and modern he is,” Iannucci tells Variety about the much-filmed tale. He cast Dev Patel as the title character — again, a piece of casting against type that works very well.
Iannucci and co-writer Simon Blackwell make the work feel up-to-date, not by inserting anachronistic topics or attitudes; the film seems contemporary because it focuses on the characters...

Big Talk Productions CEO Kenton Allen is typically straight when reflecting on 2020. “A disaster,” he says, surveying the economic wreckage of Covid-19 over a Zoom call from his home in London last month. Like countless others, the pandemic has blown a huge hole in Big Talk’s earnings and created unthinkable headaches for the company, which should have been celebrating a very healthy 12 months. But Allen, a gruff optimist, is celebrating the wins of the coronavirus crisis, rather than wallowing in what went wrong.
For starters, Big Talk managed to convince the BBC and Amazon to commission a second season of Stephen Merchant comedy-drama The Offenders before the first had even been shot. Known for comedy hits including Rev and Mum, the production firm also finally wrapped a second season of Channel 4/Sundance Now’s Back after a bewildering run of setbacks, both Covid and non-Covid-related. Another Big Talk show,...

2020 in British TV comedy brought us Maisie Williams as a kickass survivalist in a pickle, and a new parenting comedy from the hugely talented Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison starring Martin Freeman.
To add to that, there was also a fresh batch of comedians playing exaggerated versions of themselves in self-penned sitcoms, including Katherine Ryan, Mae Martin, Sara Pascoe, Kayleigh Llewellyn, Lucy Beaumont and Jon Richardson.
Here’s the skinny on all those new shows and more. Here’s what arrived in 2019, and here are the new British TV dramas that arrived in 2020.
Breeders
After their excellent 2014 relationship comedy Trying Again, Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell teamed up on a new series, this time about the trials of parenthood. Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard played parents in this ten-part half-hour comedy, a co-production between Sky in the UK and FX in the US. Watch the first trailer here.

Exclusive: Avalon wrapped production on the second season of FX and Sky’s Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard comedy Breeders last Friday, as the UK faced further coronavirus disruption amid the outbreak of fast-spreading mutation of the virus.
Created by Freeman, Chris Addison, and Simon Blackwell, the parental comedy was one of the first Sky shows to begin filming in August following the Covid-19 production hiatus. Its 15-week shoot included a two-week pause following a positive coronavirus test.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Everything’s Going To Be Ok producer Avalon makes the series in association with FX Productions. It features Freeman and Haggard as parents trying to look after their two small children Luke, played by George Wakeman, and Ava, played by Jayda Eyles.
Veep writer Blackwell serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Addison, Freeman, Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett, David Martin, Jon Thoday, Toby Welch, and Michael Wiggs.

Martin Freeman-fronted comedy “Breeders” is heading back into production on Monday.
Cameras have resumed rolling in Greater London on the second season of the Sky and FX Networks series, following a 16-week suspension due to the Covid-19 crisis. Produced by Avalon (“Catastrophe”), the show is understood to be adhering to strict coronavirus protocols, which were signed off earlier this summer.
The show is the latest to get back into production in the U.K., where the industry is gradually coming back to life after a months-long shutdown. Protocols were published in late May, and an insurance fund with government support was unveiled last month. Netflix and BBC drama “The Serpent” recently wrapped its shoot, after relocating to the U.K. from Thailand.

The Personal History of David Copperfield, which opens in North American theaters Friday, August 28th, re-imagines Charles Dickens’ classic ode to grit and perseverance through the comedic lens of director Armando Iannucci. Iannucci and co-writer Simon Blackwell lend their wry yet heart-filled storytelling style to revisiting Dickens’ iconic hero on his quirky journey from impoverished orphan to a burgeoning writer in Victorian England.
The film stars Oscar nominee Dev Patel in the title role and features a diverse cast of stage and screen actors from across the world including Aneurin Barnard, Peter Capaldi, Morfydd Clark, Daisy May Cooper, Rosalind Eleazar, Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Paul Whitehouse, Gwendoline Christie, Anthony Welsh, and Benedict Wong.
From the first moment of the trailer, I knew I wanted to see this intriguing comedic take of Dickens’ dark story play out. And play out it did – brilliantly! It is quirky, fantastical, moving, ebullient in scene and tone,...

I am (re) Born: Iannucci Condenses a Dickens Masterpiece with Contemporary Aims
“It’s in vain to recall the past, unless it works some influence upon the present,” is perhaps the most fitting quote from the actual text of Charles Dicken’s classic 1850 serial-turned-novel adapted by Armando Iannucci as The Personal History of David Copperfield. The original title, of course, is not the only necessary item condensed from the 600 page text, and is one of several notable elements from Iannucci’s version, who brings his “Veep” scribe Simon Blackwell along for the ride.
More often than note, this particular Dickens text is either treated to a wholly abridged television version (such as notable offerings from Delbert Mann and Peter Medak in decades past) or, more often, almost always presented as a television mini-series.…...
