Samuel Sebastian Cox started out his career in the arts as a classical singer working in sacred music and opera, winning a Gramophone award at the age of twelve. His wide-ranging experience as a performer brought about his first brush with filmmaking in 2013, after which he soon set his sights on a career in the industry.
While studying for a degree in English Literature at Princeton University, Sebastian explored film both practically and academically. He directed several short film projects, commercial and narrative, and became the lead videographer for the Royal Society of Sculptors. In his final year, Sebastian played the lead role in a fully staged performance of Monteverdi's 'L'Orfeo', helmed by Royal Opera director Thomas Guthrie, an innovative realisation that utilised on-stage puppetry. After graduating, Sebastian took his collaboration with Guthrie a step further, writing and directing his first short film, 'A Puppet Story', which used live puppetry in place of VFX.
In 2019 Sebastian joined forces with Felix von Stumm to co-found ScriptUp, a script development consultancy company now with hundreds of clients across the globe. Sebastian has worked directly on projects such as Academy Award long-listed 'The Auschwitz Report', Stuart Brennan's upcoming feature 'Kingslayer', and the sequel to Beta Cinema's 'The Physician'. Most recently, Sebastian has been brought on to rewrite PBS presenter Michael S. Malone's TV drama on the US-Mexico border at Tijuana, 'Friendship Park'. Alongside his work for ScriptUp, Sebastian also serves as a co-producer of the Screenwriting Competition at Manchester International Film Festival.
His writing and directorial vision are informed by longstanding passion for exploring transformation and trauma through historical narratives.
