National Geographic’s anthology series “Genius” premiered in 2017 with its first installment about Albert Einstein starring Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush. It went on to receive 10 Emmy nominations including Best Limited Series and lead actor for Rush. It returned in 2018 with a focus on Pablo Picasso and earned another seven bids, once again in the limited series category and for lead actor Antonio Banderas. Now the acclaimed Nat Geo series could three-peat with its latest installment, “Genius: Aretha,” anchored by Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
“Genius: Aretha” is the most highly acclaimed and watched season in franchise history. Verne Gray (Newsday) praised its “beautiful production” and “first rate performances, notably the one that counts most – Erivo’s.” Brian Lowry (CNN) said, “Deriving its episodic subtitles from Franklin songs, ‘Genius: Aretha’ is a testament to that hard work. And like the best musical biographies,...

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.
Previous 2/24: The second season of the reboot of The Twilight Zone was submitted for your approval, to borrow the famous phrase of original sci-fi creator Rod Serling. Apparently, there wasn’t enough approval, as the CBS All Access show won’t continue...

“The Twilight Zone” is a beast to write about. On the one hand, the original series is so ingrained in shaping popular culture that to ignore it is all but impossible; if “The Simpsons” didn’t do it first, “The Twilight Zone” almost certainly did. On the other hand, the goal of a reboot is to simultaneously entice fans who didn’t watch the original as well as honor what came before. How do you bridge the two spectrums with a show so iconic as to be all but crystallized in time?
The first season of the Jordan Peele-produced remake had its bright spots, but it also suffered from coming after “Black Mirror,” which, as a “Twilight Zone” acolyte, had already said so much about relationships and technology. Many of the same problems that plagued Season 1 of “The Twilight Zone” reboot remain in Season 2, despite one episode that blows them all away.

In this installment of Jordan Peele’s reimagined anthology, a mysterious visitor (Steven Yeun) crashes a Christmas party at a small Alaskan town’s police station. His presence is resented when he seemingly reveals the secrets of everyone in the room. But the traveler carries a secret of his own: He’s part of an alien species bent on taking over Earth. In the final moments of the episode, piercing lights fill the night sky, signifying the impending invasion. The visually expansive moment is immediately contrasted by an intimate, close-up shot in the jail cell as the traveler, now in his true form, caps off his successful journey with a bite of pie.

The American Society of Cinematographers has revealed the film and TV nominees for its 33rd annual Asc Awards, set for February 9 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.

It’s the same story for the Spotlight Award, which recognizes cinematography in smaller features that might not receive wider theatrical release or awareness. After visualizing Einstein’s theory of relativity in the first season of National Geographic’s “Genius,” cinematographer Mathias Herndl needed to come up with a similar device for “Picasso.” Of course, it helped having a tour de force performance by Antonio Banderas. But conveying the Spanish painter’s Cubist genius throughout the 20th century took some clever thinking.
The process began with inspiration from a famous 1956 photo of Pablo Picasso by Arnold Newman, surrounded by his art in his La Californie studio, near Cannes. It was colorful as well as cinematic. “He’s wearing this dark red top and a lot of his paintings in the background have deep blues, so we went for red, gold, and blue. I was very intent to make it Mediterranean,” said the Emmy-nominated Herndl (who earned an Asc award for “Einstein”).

When “Genius: Picasso” director of photography Mathias Herndl got tapped to direct the last two episodes of the season, Ryan Purcell, one of his longtime second unit members, got a promotion too. “When this opportunity came up for the second part [of the season], they gave him a block to direct, so they said, ‘Ryan, you’re up to bat, finish off the show,’” Purcell said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Cinematography panel, moderated by this author (watch above).
Since he was following in the auspicious footsteps of Herndl, who won an Asc Award for “Genius: Einstein,” Purcell said his goal was never to add his own flair to the four episodes he DPed, but to maintain the look that Herndl had already established “like any good alternating Dp should.” “You’re essentially going to screw up the series if you’re gonna start changing it halfway through, so keep it going,...

Surprisingly, when production designer Arv Greywal joined Genius in Season 2 to take on Picasso, sourcing art was the least of his concerns.
Perhaps the greatest painter of the 20th century, Picasso led a long and fascinating life, spanning 91 years, three wars, and endless artistic creations. For Greywal—who also has Waco and Alias Grace up for Emmys consideration—the incredible path Picasso’s life took resulted in endless design opportunities. “He lived for so long, and lived in so many different places, and experienced so many different things,” Greywal says. “How many wives and muses did he have? How many art schools, art studios, art galleries displayed [his work]? How many places did he live?”
While Picasso’s complex life provided endless design opportunities, it also resulted in a complex production. “To me, the project was so expansive that it was really daunting, in terms of, how do you bring this together?...

As expected, cinematographer Roger Deakins took the top prize for “Blade Runner 2049” at the 32nd annual Asc Awards at Hollywood & Highland. It was his fourth Asc award, besting the other four Oscar nominees: Bruno Delbonnel (“Darkest Hour”), Hoyte van Hoytema (“Dunkirk”), Dan Laustsen (“The Shape of Water”), and Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”), the first female from her branch nominated by the Asc and the Academy.
But can Deakins finally earn the elusive Academy Award after 14 nominations? He’s certainly the sentimental favorite for his trippy, sci-fi naturalism in Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner” sequel. And winning the BAFTA Sunday (also his fourth) would certainly provide added momentum.
But there’s also a case to be made for three of the other contenders: Van Hoytema’s innovative IMAX work for Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic, Lausten’s sublime imagery for Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture favorite, and...

The 32nd annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards took place on Feb. 17 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland and were emceed by Turner Classic Movies’ Ben Mankiewicz. Over the years, the Asc has predicted 128 of the 160 Oscar nominees (80%), including all five of this year’s contenders: Roger Deakins (“Blade Runner 2049”), Bruno Delbonnel (“Darkest Hour”), Dan Laustsen (“The Shape of Water”), Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) and Hoyte van Hoytema (“Dunkirk”). But it has only previewed 13 of the last 31 winners of the Oscar for Best Cinematography; that is a a success rate of just 41%.
Deakins, who is the Oscar frontrunner for Best Cinematography, won for the fourth time from 15 bids with the Asc. His previous wins were for “The Shawkshank Redemption” (1994), “The Man Who Wasn’t There” (2001) and “Skyfall” (2012). He has yet to translate any of those victories into an Oscar, where he is 0 for 13.

The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) feature film nominees tends to lean toward big-scale movies, and this year is no exception. Their top five include frontrunner Roger Deakins for his stunning visuals in “Blade Runner 2049” as well as Rachel Morrison, who photographed “Mudbound.” Left out were viable but smaller-scale contenders “Call Me By Your Name” and “The Post.”
So far, neither the Asc nor the cinematography branch of the Academy has ever nominated a woman for a feature film. So Morrison’s nomination is a big deal. (Next up for Morrison: Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Black Panther.”) According to a study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film, women made up 5 percent of cinematographers on the top 250 domestic-grossing films in 2016.
