House lawmakers overwhelmingly passed legislation today that would force the parent company of TikTok to divest the popular app or face a ban on U.S. platforms.
The legislation passed 352-65, easily clearing the 2/3 threshold needed.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where no timetable is set for considering the legislation.
“The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) said in a statement.
But the bill gained two key supporters, Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-fl), the chair and ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who have previously sought measures to restrict the effort.
Under the legislation, ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, would be forced to sell the social media platform within about five months or face having it banned on app stores or web hosting services. The bill, called the Protecting...

Republican lawmakers in the House are once again at each other’s throats, this time over their efforts to secure hardline border and immigration reform.
On Friday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) skewered former President Donald Trump — and members of his own party — for failing to secure the border during his own time in office during an interview on Fox Business.
“President Trump failed, along with Republicans … they failed in 2018 to actually move a border security bill to tighten this so that we weren’t dealing with this crisis right now,...

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) may have just torched his open invite on Fox News after accusing host Jesse Watters of being “the type of dude who pees sitting down.”
The Republican congressman’s tiff with Watters began on Tuesday after the host featured Crenshaw in a segment reviewing lawmakers’ stellar year trading stocks. The segment was based on a report by the blog Unusual Whales, which comes amid calls to ban lawmakers from actively buying and selling stocks as a way to address longstanding concerns about congressional insider trading.

The office of House Speaker is officially empty, and the Republican Party is in a state of chaos.
On Tuesday, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) became the first House Speaker ever to be fired from the position. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) brought a motion to oust him on Monday, and then he and seven other Republicans voted to ditch the California congressman a day later. The rest of the party was not happy, and in some cases visibly distraught, after the GOP left itself with no leader and no clear path forward.

Enrique Tarrio — the capo of the Proud Boys on Jan. 6 — has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for his part in the seditious conspiracy to block the peaceful transfer of power to President Joe Biden following the 2020 election. Tarrio’s two-decade sentence — the stiffest yet for a Jan. 6 defendant — was handed down Tuesday afternoon in a packed Washington, D.C., courtroom.
Tarrio’s prison term tops that delivered to Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers, who received 18 years for leading that militia’s seditious conspiracy plot on Jan.

2Nd Update, 12:27 Pm Pt: “Thank you, Mr. Chew, for bringing Republicans and Democrats together,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-tx) said to the CEO of TikTok as a marathon congressional hearing was winding down Thursday.
Lawmakers of both parties pilloried the company and expressed frustration at what they saw as CEO Shou Zi Chew’s evasive answers during the session before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. It was a rare congressional hearing where there was so much agreement on the criticism of a company and a witness, albeit not all members said that TikTok should be banned and some focused their comments on social media privacy in general.
Will the publicity surrounding the hearing compel lawmakers to move on legislation? Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. John Thune (R-sd), who have proposed a bill that would allow the Commerce Secretary to ban TikTok and other apps connected to foreign countries,...

The week of chaos, confusion, and (literal) infighting that preceded Kevin McCarthy’s election as speaker was a pretty strong indication that the Republican Party’s control of the House of Representatives was going to be a shitshow.
They’ve been in control for a week now. Yes, it’s been a shitshow, but the past few days have also served as a reminder that along with all of the antics comes a laser-like focus on derailing the American government.
Republicans have hit the ground running since McCarthy belatedly took up the gavel last Friday.

Kevin McCarthy really, really, really wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives. It’s not coming. The 118th Congress began on Tuesday, and though Republicans won control of the chamber last November, a not-insignificant portion of the party remains steadfastly opposed to giving McCarthy the gavel. McCarthy has lost three consecutive speakership ballots, with 19 Republicans opposing him on the first two, and 20 on the third.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 other defectors to vote against McCarthy on the third ballot, which means McCarthy is drifting even further away from securing the majority necessary.

On Wednesday’s “The Daily Show,” Trevor Noah took aim at the way Democratic Pennsylvania U.S. Senate Candidate John Fetterman’s recovery from a stroke has been depicted by both major media outlets and Republicans. And in addition to showing why that reaction is ridiculous, he also accurately described the inherent bigotry implied by it, which he called “trash.”
So, for some background, Fetterman was interviewed by NBC News reporter Dasha Burns this week, his first TV interview since having a stroke in May. While Fetterman’s answers were perfectly coherent in the interview, like many stroke victims, he has lingering issues with speech recognition. However, his cognition is unimpaired, he can speak fine and also can read, so he uses captions to ensure he understands what he’s hearing.

Survive, from New York: “Saturday Night Live” will continue on without four prominent departing cast members, but most of them got a chance to offer up a few final laughs before the show completed its 47th season.
Word that Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Pete Davidson planned to leave the venerable late-night series after Saturday’s broadcast leaked out late in the week. Pete Davidson, who joined “Saturday Night Live” as a relative unknown and has become a superstar whose presence graces gossip pages daily, is expected to leave “Saturday Night Live” after the broadcast of this weekend’s season finale, according to a person familiar with the matter. He is one of a handful of long-serving cast members including Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon whose tenure on the show has come up for scrutiny at the conclusion of recent seasons. Davidson joined the show in 2014 as a featured player at the age of 20, one of the youngest cast members in the program’s 47 seasons on air.
NBC declined to make producers at “SNL” available for comment.
His departure is likely to draw a new burst of attention to the long-running program, which typically uses its summer hiatus to recalibrate its cast of players and contributors.

Updated, with additional coverage details: The first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol will be marked by continuous coverage across the broadcast and cable news networks, as reporters and anchors recount the events of that day while sharing plenty of consternation over what has happened since.

Updated: Lawmakers for a key House committee united Thursday in a bipartisan attack on the nation’s three biggest social media platforms and threatened their CEOs with all kinds of oversight.
Peter Welch (D-vt) of the House Energy and Finance Committee discussed creating a public agency like the FCC or FTC with rulemaking and enforcement powers for the Internet — like “the SEC was designed to stop rampant abuse on Wall Street in the 1930s.”
A month after Sen. Amy Klobuchar introduced an antitrust bill aimed at big tech, House pols compared the giant platforms Facebook, Twitter and Google — run by Mark Zuckberg, Jack Dorsey and Sundar Pichai — to old fashioned monopolists like Standard Oil and Ma Bell. The FTC and dozens of states have filed antitrust lawsuits against Google and Facebook.
Reps bashed Facebook’s new push to build an Instagram for kids under 13, likening it to Big Tobacco fostering addiction.

The pandemic has driven home a lesson that’s been true for a long time about Republican politicians: They don’t actually care about the welfare of their constituents so long as they’re able to trick enough people into people into believing the other side is responsible for everything that’s wrong. Nearly 500,000 people have died and millions more have had their lives upturned largely because of the GOP’s negligence, but they’ll have you believe the real enemies are the liberals impinging on your freedom by asking you to wear a mask.

One week before the 2020 election, Donald Trump beamed out at a Lansing, Michigan crowd and delivered his closing pitch to the women he imagined might be watching him. “I’m also getting your husbands — they want to get back to work, right? They want to get back to work. We’re getting your husbands back to work, and everybody wants it,” Trump said.

The highlight of the third night of the Republican National Convention will be speeches by Vice President Mike Pence and the second lady of the United States, Karen Pence, but there is another major news story looming: Hurricane Laura.
Throughout the day on Wednesday, news networks already were doing a split screen tracker of the hurricane, which is posing a threat to the Gulf Coast as a potential category four storm as it makes landfall. That is projected on the Louisiana and Texas coasts sometime late in the evening or Thursday morning.
Convention planners have not yet said how or if the oncoming hurricane will be addressed during the evening’s events, or if any plans are changing.
This actually is not a new thing for political conventions – which often land in August, at the start of hurricane season. In 2008, Republicans canceled most of the events planned for the first...

Pete Davidson's was the first millennial cast member hired by Saturday Night Live. He delivered one of my all-time favorite SNL moments when he welcomed Congressman and former Navy Seal Dan Crenshaw on the show for a comedic reconciliation.
The on-air meeting occurred one week after Davidson mocked Crenshaw's eye patch the week prior (a moment that simultaneously had boasted the Congressman's sense of humor).
Faulty first impressions, it seems, lead to hasty errs in judgment.
And that is the message taken from Davidson's starring debut, The King of Staten Island, to be released digitally on June 12 by Universal.
Davidson is known for a lot of things, but mostly for famous girlfriends like Cazzie David, Kaia Gerber, Kate Beckinsale, Carly Aquilino (who happens to cameo in King), and, of course, Ariana Grande.
Other than his relationships, his public suffering of Crohn's disease, borderline personality disorder, and substance abuse have...

Rep. Ilhan Omar is once again being targeted by Republicans and right-wing media. Once again, the attacks against the Muslim lawmaker are clouded in bad faith. The latest round of outrage comes in light of comments Omar made last month at a Council on American-Islamic Relations event in Los Angeles, where she spoke about the anti-Muslim bigotry spawned by 9/11. Here’s what she said:
“Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and frankly, I’m tired of it and every single Muslim in...

What does Captain America have against Lay’s?
The latest Twitter debate gained steam when Chris Evans retweeted an innocent enough video in which a group of men ranked six different brands of potato chips featured in a boxed assortment.
The debate went viral, with everyone from Questlove, Perez Hilton and Monica Lewinsky sharing their rankings, and let me tell you, America has clearly never been more divided over an issue than this one.

Catholic officials are speaking out against “Saturday Night Live” following a “Weekend Update” sketch featuring Pete Davidson. During the sketch comedy show’s Idris Elba-hosted episode on March 9, Davidson made a joke comparing alleged sex abuse within the Catholic Church to R. Kelly’s long history of sexual abuse allegations.
“This guy is a monster and he should go to jail forever,” Davidson said about Kelly during “Weekend Update.” “But if you support the Catholic church, isn’t that, like, the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan? I don’t really see the difference, except for one’s music is significantly better.”
Catholic leaders in Brooklyn are demanding an apology from “Saturday Night Live” in regards to Davidson’s now-controversial joke. The Diocese of Brooklyn released a statement online (via Deadline) calling Davidson’s moment “disgraceful” and the segment as a whole an “offensive skit.”

Texas Congressman Dan Crenshaw has a nifty piece of eye-ware that would make Nick Fury jealous — a “Captain America”-themed glass eye.
During a visit to Washington, D.C. by “Captain America” star Chris Evans on Friday, Crenshaw showed off his “Captain America” tribute. And Evans was certainly impressed.
“When Captain America sees your Captain America glass eye. #merica,” the congressman tweeted. To which Evans replied: “A Very cool use of vibranium.”

Vibranium, of course, is the fictional metal substance from Wakanda that Captain America’s shield is made of. Captain America met Congressman America this week on Capitol Hill, as actor Chris Evans, who plays the red, white and blue hero in the movies, met with House Rep. Dan Crenshaw on Friday.
Crenshaw had a surprise for Evans. The Texas congressman, who lost an eye during combat service in Afghanistan, showed off a glass eye with the famous Captain America logo.
He memorialized the moment later in a tweet. “When Captain America sees your Captain America glass eye.”
Crenshaw is a first-term congressman, but became nationally known after being mocked by comedian Pete Davidson last year on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment. In a bit taking down figures in the news, Davidson said Crenshaw looked like “a hit man in a porno movie.”
The resulting outrage from groups supporting the former Navy Seal was intense. A week later, Crenshaw appeared on SNL with a chastened Davidson, who apologized.

It’s been a quiet morning on President Trump’s Twitter account so far. That’s because the Commander-in-Tweet is out celebrating International Women’s Day, albeit a day late.
The White House reports President Trump is engaging this morning in a round of golf with Lexi Thompson, who has more than $8 million in career earnings on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (Lpga) circuit.
Before heading to the links, the President did manage a tweet reporting on The Wall and enforcement actions along the border.
However, the president woke up this afternoon, returning to his traditional voluminous Twitter output, taking on immigration, Ann Coulter, and the ever-popular “witch hunt” campaign against him.

Judd Apatow has set his next feature film, an untitled comedy that will star Saturday Night Live castmember Pete Davidson. It will reflect a storyline that mirrors the comic’s own life, including his firefighter father on 9/11. It’s Apatow’s first film since Trainwreck, a vehicle crafted for Amy Schumer.
