Starz has renewed comedy “Run the World” for a second season, which will see Rachelle Williams joining the series as its new showrunner. Yvette Lee Bowser is still on board as an executive producer, but she handed off the showrunning duties to focus on a slate of projects she has in development, a person close to production said.
Series creator Leigh Davenport is still there to executive produce as well.
“’Run the World’ has been so passionately embraced by our audience and we are thrilled to bring fans another season,” Alison Hoffman, the president of domestic networks for Starz, said in a statement on Friday. “Our incredibly talented cast and executive producers Yvette and Leigh are set to return, and we’re excited to welcome Rachelle back into the Starz family leading as showrunner and executive producer.”

Updated: Starz CEO Jeff Hirsch said “mid-budget films play better on our service than anything else,” as per the exclusive first-window output deal for Lionsgate and Summit films announced this morning.
“Movies are important to our service. Big box office movies drive a lot of acquisitions and conversions,” he said on a Q&a at a Morgan Stanley media conference Tuesday afternoon. “It’s also great that I can walk across the street with [Motion Pictures Group chairman] Joe Drake and say ‘Look, how did this perform, can we make another one?’”
Growth, however, is mainly driven by original series. How many? Sixteen, he said. “We will have 12 this year, rising to 16 next year.”
Hirsch describe Starz as he has in the past as a “B-tier” service, focused on adults led by Black women, without sports news or kids’ fare. An A-tier service – the usual suspects – would bank between 200 to 300 million subscribers, he said.

Entertainment Chiefs Talk Covid-19’s ‘Generation Defining’ Impact at Nab Executive Leadership Summit
There is no doubt that the coronavirus pandemic has had a “generation defining” impact on the entertainment business.
During the Nab Show Executive Leadership Summit, produced in partnership with the Variety Streaming Room, leaders from across the business gathered virtually to discuss how Covid-19 is changing the business across all platforms, and how Gen Z’s viewing habits are guiding their decision-making.
With the pandemic forcing production on pretty much every single film and television project to shut down for the time being, the depth and quality of a service’s library is proving key to getting through this difficult time for original content, according to Alison Hoffman, president of domestic networks at Starz, who was speaking as part of the “A View from Above: TV Transformed” panel.
“We’re seeing increased acquisition, subscriber acquisition, increased viewership, increased engagement, meaning views per customer, I think like a lot of streamers are,...
