Oliver Stone is more than just a filmmaker. The man enlisted in the United States Army during the time of the Vietnam War and when he returned, he decided to tell the harrowing stories of war through the art of filmmaking. His 1986 film Platoon starring was one such film, but it could’ve ended up looking a bit different if actors like Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner had agreed to be a part of it.
A still from Platoon (1986)
So why did they turn down a film that would go on to become critically acclaimed, do great at the box office, and receive not one, but four Academy Awards? Well, given the fact that the film was based on the Vietnam War and Oliver Stone’s firsthand experience with it, the topic might have been a bit too much for the actors.

Back in 2021, Boom! Studios unveiled the comic book series Brzrkr, based on an original idea by Keanu Reeves, who also wrote the comic book with Matt Kindt. Netflix quickly secured the rights to make both a live-action film adaptation and an anime spin-off series that would “expand the Brzrkr universe by exploring different elements of the story”. It’s been a while since we heard any updates on those projects, but Deadline has broken the news that Reeves has been working with China Miéville to write The Book of Elsewhere, a novel set in the world of Brzrkr.
Random House imprint Del Rey will be publishing The Book of Elsewhere on July 23rd. An audio edition will be released simultaneously by Penguin Random House Audio.

As for the novel, Keanu Reeves will co-write alongside China Miéville. It’s titled The Book of Elsewhere, and the Random House imprint Del Rey is publishing it on July 23.
Deadline previews, “The novel will follow an immortal warrior on a millennia-long quest to discover the key to his immortality.”

As the Writers Guild of America strike nears its second complete month, many continue to weigh in on the issues that pervade it, including the use of artificial intelligence in the writers room. And it’s not just writers and casual observers, but studio bigwigs. Now, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO, is admitting that AI can be scary but may not be worth labeling a true threat.
Speaking with IndieWire on their Screen Talk podcast, Rothman said, “A lot of the panic about this is overwrought…I don’t believe that AI can replace creative genius.” Still, he admitted, “I believe AI is scary as shit. For a period of a time in my life, I was working on a movie with Steven Spielberg called Robopocalypse. Trust me, bad sh*t can happen. You seriously think a computer can’t figure out the nuclear codes?...

Keanu Reeves has had many memorable kissing scenes with a few onscreen partners. There was one make-out sequence, however, that Reeves remembered for the wrong reasons.
Keanu Reeves on his ‘most painful kiss ever’ Keanu Reeves | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Many stars have had nothing but praise for Reeves’ onscreen kissing skills. Some, like Diane Keaton, have admitted to even getting flustered by smooching the star. So much so that she felt embarrassed kissing her much younger partner in Something’s Gotta Give.
“It was pretty embarrassing, and for Keanu, too,” Keaton once said according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “It has to do with time of life. It’s instinctive – [while kissing him] you go, ‘Uh, probably not!’ And Keanu was going, ‘Definitely not!’ He was trying to be polite. But he’s so beautiful, it’s stupefying. It was a guilty pleasure. A very guilty pleasure.”
Reeves has often had similar kind words for his co-stars.

I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

We’re at the Air Pods moment of the strike. The chattiness outside the studio gates has given way to plug in, shut up and march. Pop those little white buds in, wave that sign and get in your 25,000 steps. Everyone’s already reconnected with their old writers room colleagues on the picket lines, bounced from studio to studio, gone to the various theme days: Now it’s about covering shifts.

Martial arts and stunt legend Scott Adkins got a chance to really go for it with his role in "John Wick: Chapter 4." After bugging franchise director Chad Stahelski for years to cast him in an actual role, the English stunt performer finally got his moment in the spotlight, playing the German head of the High Table, who's basically the bad boss at the end of the video game, Killa Harkan.
The hulking crime boss was a truly unique role for the prolific martial arts actor, who was previously known for his performance in "Undisputed II" and for playing karate expert and cartoonishly racist Marine gunnery sergeant Barton Geddes in "Ip Man 4: The Finale." That role saw him act opposite Hong Kong martial arts legend Donnie Yen, who would once again find himself faced with one of Adkins' grotesque villains in "John Wick: Chapter 4." Keanu Reeves became the leading man he is today thanks in large part to movies like Speed. But when he was first brought on board to lead the Sandra Bullock feature, he was less than impressed.
Keanu Reeves felt the original ‘Speed’ was a screwball ‘Die Hard’ Keanu Reeves | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Speed was one of the films that established Reeves as a leading man. In the popular 1994 hit, Reeves played police officer Jack Traven who tried to save passengers on a bus that was rigged to explode. When Reeves first read the film’s script, however, he was less than thrilled by what he’d seen on the page. Although the actor saw the film’s potential, the movie reminded him of another action thriller.

Lionsgate’s John Wick franchise introduced an aspect of the plot that could make it challenging to continue the series, but since when has a bump in the road kept Hollywood from keeping the money train on the tracks? Lionsgate executives recently got a first look at Ballerina, the John Wick spinoff starring Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick. With optimism in the air, creatives wonder how long they can keep the franchise going after Ballerina, and the John Wick prequel series, The Continental, take center stage. According to The Continental producer Basil Iwanyk, we’ll know more by September. Still, that won’t keep him from commenting on where the franchise could go after the shocking finale of John Wick: Chapter 4.

Exclusive: While the title character ended John Wick: Chapter 4 under a headstone, the John Wick franchise is alive and kicking for Lionsgate. This week, Lionsgate brass got a first look at Ballerina, its Len Wiseman-helmed spinoff film that stars Ana de Armas and brings back Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, the late Lance Reddick and Anjelica Huston. The big question is, after the last film grossed over $400 million on a $90 million budget, what right minded studio would retire a franchise that just turned in its highest gross and best reviews?
Basil Iwanyk has produced the series since the beginning, and he told Deadline that a lot more will be known by September. That’s when director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves head to Japan where, Iwanyk said, they will split a couple bottles of whiskey. “Once they get through their hangovers, if Keanu and Chad have figured out something cool,...

Even though John Wick: Chapter 4 has pulled in over $400 million worldwide and is one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023 so far, that doesn’t mean that signals a guaranteed John Wick 5. And that’s coming from director Chad Stahelski, who has helmed the series since the beginning.
Speaking with The Direct, Stahelski said so much energy and creativity was put into the fourth movie that he couldn’t possibly begin to comprehend John Wick 5, although he hasn’t completely shut out the idea. “The real question you ask yourself is not, ‘Do I want it?’ Yes, I wouldn’t mind doing it. We just tried to knock it out of the park. We tried to put everything on the table, take nothing, and leave it all. Like, ‘Fuck it, every idea. We’re not saving anything. We’re not trying to build. Just everything you got, leave it there.

Global audiences have been gaga for Baba Yaga with Lionsgate/Thunder Road Films/87 Eleven’s John Wick: Chapter 4 now having passed the $400M mark worldwide.
The Keanu Reeves-starrer jumped out of the gate in late March, scoring a $137.5M global debut in a best-ever for the franchise. JW4 in mid-April then became the top-grossing film in the series; it’s also the best-reviewed John Wick movie ever at 94% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Currently, JW4 is estimated at $226M overseas and $402M global (+22% versus John Wick 3 – Parabellum’s final tally). That’s after a weekend that brought in another $10.1M from 86 international box office markets.
The previous titles in the series have had staggered overseas releases while JW4 kicked off in 71 markets, the widest day-and-date release internationally for the franchise.
Anticipation was high for the Chad Stahelski-directed pic with Reeves starting a promotional tour at Brazil Comic Con in December.

As is true of many great stories, the success of "John Wick" began with pure passion: longtime screenwriter Derek Kolstad put his love of action cinema to paper and wrote the script, which eventually found its way into the hands of Keanu Reeves, who passed it onto veteran stunt coordinators David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. I'd say the rest is history, but there's much more to the story — because in the wake of the first "John Wick" film's wild success, a sequel was destined to follow. And that was an unexpected challenge.
"John Wick" wasn't meant to have a sequel. In fact, there was a pretty significant period where the film, originally titled "Scorn," was expected to go straight to VOD, where it may have languished in obscurity. Instead, it performed so well both at the box office and in digital sales that the team was approached about making a sequel.

You can tell a lot about actors by the way they treat their fans, and that was the case when Keanu Reeves encountered a 9-year-old fan named Noah during a surprise signing for Bzrkr, the comic book series Reeves co-created.

Reeves asks his name, and then introduces himself: “Hi Noah, I’m Keanu.”

Matthew Perry says digs towards Keanu Reeves will be dropped from future editions of his best-selling memoir, adding that he will apologise to the actor “if I run into the guy”.
Last year, the 53-year-old Friends star released an autobiography called Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which included repeated jokes at Reeves’ expense.
Perry twice questioned why other actors die while The Matrix star is still alive.

Actor Matthew Perry has pledged to remove his controversial remarks about actor Keanu Reeves from future editions of his memoir, ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’.
The ‘Friends’ actor apologised after receiving backlash for writing about Reeves in his book, questioning why the actor “still walks among us” when “talented” actors and “original thinkers” like River Phoenix and Chris Farley had passed, reports Variety.
Now, Perry is taking action by removing the references to Reeves. At the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on Saturday, Perry said that all future editions of ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’ would omit Reeves’ name.
“I said a stupid thing. It was a mean thing to do,” Perry said at the festival.
“I pulled his name because I live on the same street. I’ve apologised publicly to him. Any future versions of the book will not have his name in it.

Matthew Perry has decided to turn his words into actions regarding his negative comments about Keanu Reeves in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
After previously apologizing for the passages that reference the John Wick actor, Perry said at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on Saturday that he is removing Reeves’ name from future editions of the book, because “I said a stupid thing. It was a mean thing to do.”
In October 2022, days before his memoir hit shelves, Perry released a statement to media outlets, saying, “I’m actually a big fan of Keanu. I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead.”
The excerpts that the Friends star is referencing are ones where he opens up about his own struggles with addiction and alcoholism and expressed that other actors, like his former co-stars River Phoenix and Chris Farley,...

Matthew Perry is continuing to make amends for the shot he took at Keanu Reeves.
The “Friends” star attracted controversy last year when he mentioned Reeves while paying tribute to the late River Phoenix in a passage of his memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”
“River was a beautiful man, inside and out — too beautiful for this world, it turned out,” Perry wrote in the book. “It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down. Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us? River was a better actor than me; I was funnier. But I certainly held my own in our scenes — no small feat, when I look back decades later.”

Matthew Perry has seen the error in his ways when it comes to dissing Keanu Reeves.
While speaking at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Book on Saturday, the Friends actor vowed to remove Reeves’ name from future editions of his memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.” The book was released in November of 2022 and chronicled Perry’s battle with addiction.

By our count, there are over 300 characters killed in the first three "John Wick" movies, and that's not even counting this year's "John Wick: Chapter 4," which added another hundred or so deaths to the mix. As a hitman, Keanu Reeves' gun-fu-fighting protagonist inhabits a kill-or-be-killed world, and usually, he's the one carrying out the slaughter. However, one of the most brutal deaths in Mr. Wick's movie repertoire was assisted by his target.
In "John Wick: Chapter 2," Wick has to honor an old marker he swore in order to retire and marry the love of his life. He doesn't want to go through with the kill at first, and only does so reluctantly when he's threatened with expulsion from the underworld and the loss of protection he enjoys. (The guy holding that marker also blows his house up with a grenade launcher.) This leads Wick to Rome, where he...

Here at JoBlo, we’re pretty massive fans of both Scott Adkins and Keanu Reeves. You can watch both men battle it out in John Wick: Chapter 4 right now, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you really are missing out on one of the great modern action flicks. In his downtime, Scott Adkins has his own show on his YouTube channel called The Art of Action, where he sits down with some of the most significant modern action stars and interviews them about their careers. What’s interesting about Adkins’ interviews is that being an action hero in his own right, he knows exactly what a physical challenge these movies can be, so he can go into the nitty-gritty of some of the most complex sequences of their careers. Adkins has interviewed almost every action star of note, and they tend to open up to Adkins in...

Aziz Ansari is heading back to the director's chair to make his first feature film ... again! In case you forgot, Ansari was set to make his directorial debut with the film "Being Mortal," which was shut down following sexual harassment allegations lodged against the film's star, Bill Murray. It seemed as if the film-directing career of Ansari, who was also accused of sexual misconduct in 2018, was over before it even began. Then again, this is Hollywood, baby! Of course, Aziz Ansari, a seven-time Emmy nominee and two-time winner, is still getting the opportunity to make a high-profile comedy film with a star-studded cast!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ansari is making his actual feature directorial debut with the film "Good Fortune." Not to be confused with Fortune Feimster's hilarious stand-up special of the same name, not much is known about "Good Fortune" outside of the fact Ansari is starring alongside Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves.

"John Wick: Chapter 4" has cemented the series' standing as a blockbuster franchise, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie since the pandemic began. Keanu Reeves' massively popular hitman has shot, punched, and even sliced open the heads of innumerable opponents on his way to establishing himself as a box office force to be reckoned with. And considering where the series started, that's a seriously impressive feat.
Back in 2014, when the first "John Wick" debuted, no one was expecting the film to do much. With a distinctly B-movie plot and a leading man whose star was fading in the run-up to the movie's release, "John Wick" looked destined to be a forgotten direct-to-video actioner; even when it was acquired by a studio, no one could predict it would become the catalyst for one of the best modern action franchises to date. But writer Derek Kolstad had a trick up his sleeve.

The actor was a massive action star in the 1990s and early 2000s but had about a decade in his career where he tried a bit of everything, starring in films ranging from the time-traveling romance "The Lake House" to the cult comic favorite "Constantine." While some of these films are more appreciated in retrospect, none of them were major blockbusters or critical darlings. Reeves sort of fell off the radar as far as a lot of mainstream America was concerned. Then along came the first "John Wick" back in 2014, sparking what fans now call the "Keanaissance," rocketing the performer to near-iconic action hero status. "John Wick" was released right around the time social media and meme culture were really blowing up, and Keanu Reeves memes are plentiful.

It will be a while before Lionsgate‘s John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, dances into cinemas. The studio announced on Tuesday that the action thrill ride starring Ana de Armas will dance into theaters on June 7, 2024. Len Wiseman (Underworld) directs from a script by Shay Hatten. Based on characters created by Derek Kolstad, Ballerina expands the John Wick universe as Ana de Armas stars as an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma. The Ballerina release date is the latest step toward expanding the John Wick universe, and we couldn’t be more psyched!
Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the late Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves star alongside Ana de Armas in the action-packed spinoff. Reports say that the project started as a “totally separate, original action spec” and something that was “even more over-the-top than John Wick.“ Eventually, the filmmakers conceived of...

Of the many weapons that mythic assassin John Wick has used to kill hundreds of bad guys over the span of four movies, a gun still best defines him — and the series.
“No one does guns more than we do,” says “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski, a former stuntman. With the four films in the franchise, Stahelski has taken “gun-fu” (a balletic blend of martial arts and gunfighting) to new commercial and creative heights even as the use of guns on set has become hotly debated since the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
“John Wick: Chapter 4” was in production in Paris when the incident happened in October 2021, but though there was intense concern for those involved, the “Wick” set wasn’t shaken — primarily because Stahelski has gone to great lengths to create a culture of safety and preparedness around the weaponry.
