Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). These wins more than makes up for his loss last year when Villeneuve won the Best Director honor for Polytechnique, but lost in the Best Film category to J'ai tué ma mere. The predictable 13th edition also saw a Genie-Jutra winner from Barney's Version and in the Animated Film category, the Nfb (naturally) supported Theodore Ushev added a Jutra to his Genie for Lipsett Diaries. Best Film/meilleur film 10 1/2 - Pierre Gendron (Zoofilms) Les amours imaginaires - Xavier Dolan,...

Toronto -- Quebec director Sylvain Archambault's "Piche': Entre Ciel et Terre," has crossed the $3 million boxoffice mark in Quebec after nearly one month in local theaters, distributor Tva Films said Thursday.
The biopic about a Quebec pilot who made world headlines in August 2001 when he glided a crippled jetliner, with 304 people on board, to a safe landing on the Azores bowed on July 7 in the French-speaking province with 95 dates.
The drama, which stars Michel Cote and Maxime LeFlaguais, chronicles how Piche' faced not only immediate hero worship, but revelations about time spent in a U.S. jail in the 1980s for landing a small aircraft filled with drugs on a Georgia airstrip.
The film chronicles Piche' going into alcohol rehab to come to terms with the sudden media glare and long-hidden personal shortfalls.

You might have noticed the coverage of this years ultra-sized Fantasia film festival in the Reviews and Interviews column of the site from a number of contributors taking in the festival: Mack, Shelagh, Peter, Todd, and myself, as well as a plethora of other Twitch writers hither and yon. Covering a festival of this size is a massive undertaking and I hope you enjoyed all the updates, interviews, and reviews. Rest assured there are still a few more to come. As Fantasia winds down with a screening of Metropolis Extended Edition and full orchestra, it seems to have been a raging success this year across the board. The festival announced its Jury and Audience awards, and they are below. It seems that the Subversive Serbia sidebar was a big hit, with controversial A Serbian Film getting one of the big audience awards.

Novem, a production company owned by TV host Véronique Cloutier, announced the production of many feature films. In fact, the first one is called Cabotins. It will be in Quebec's theatres on July 23, 2010.
The film was directed by Alain Desrochers, scripted by Ian Lauzon and produced with a budget of $4,800,000.
It tells the story of Marcel (Rémy Girard), a former actor and producer of variety shows. He now lives in the countryside. Moreover, his wife left him and he's financially down on his luck. In order to get his life back on track, he goes to Montreal in order to recruit former colleagues. Indeed, Marcel wants to make a reunion stage show. Marcel will come across Lady Moon (Yves Jacques), a transvestite; Lucie (Dorothée Berryman), a comedian; and Roger (Gilles Renaud), an old crooner. The three of them accept, but insist that Marcel hires Pedro (Pierre-François Legendre), Marcel's son. However,...

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.
1. Best Motion Picture
* 3 saisons.
* Before Tomorrow.
* Fifty Dead Men Walking.
* Nurse.Fighter.Boy.

2. Achievement in Direction:

New York's Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA), in association with Telefilm Canada, will organize the seventh annual Canadian Front. This event will be held from March 17 to March 24, 2010. Moreover, New Yorkers will have the chance to see nine Canadian films.
Obviously, this event should help Canadian films to find a U.S. distributor and allow New Yorkers to see Canadian films that were completed over the last 18 months. As a matter of fact, it was the Canadian Front event that allowed Bruce McDonald's brilliant zombie film Pontypool to be distributed in the USA by IFC Films for instance.
This year, the Canadian Front has in store two comedies, two dramas, two coming-of-age stories, two documentaries and an old classic. Speaking about that classic, the film in question was directed by Allan King, a Canadian director who left us in June 2009 and whose work was the subject of a MoMA retrospective in 2007. So,...

It's one of those years where the great Atom Egoyan's contribution to cinema is totally insignificant (Adoration received 2 noms) and where Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique, in my books the best Canadian film of the year, grabbed the high count total of eleven nominations for the 30th Genie Awards. - It's one of those years where the great Atom Egoyan's contribution to cinema is totally insignificant (Adoration received 2 noms) and where Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique, in my books the best Canadian film of the year, grabbed the high count total of eleven nominations for the 30th Genie Awards. What is somewhat odd is how Canada's most internationally celebrated film in I Killed My Mother (J'ai tue ma mere) from Xavier Dolan receive not one single vote, a crime when you consider the textured writing, fluid cinematography and the brilliant performance from Anne Dorval - who plays the neurotic mother...

Sony Pictures has picked up the remake rights to the French-Canadian hit "Fathers and Guns" for an adaptation to be developed and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.
Denise Robert and Emile Gaudreault, producer and writer-director, respectively, of the original film, will also produce.
"Guns" is an action-comedy about two cops, father and son, who can't stand each other. They are assigned to an investigation to infiltrate an outdoor adventure group-therapy camp for fathers and sons.
Released in Quebec this past summer as "De Pere en flic," the film gave Hollywood productions a run for their money. It beat out "Bruno" on opening weekend, took in two-thirds of the summer's ticket sales in French-language films in Quebec and out-grossed Hollywood fare by more than a 50% margin. It is now the highest-grossing French-language film ever released in Quebec and Canada.
