"What happened to you... Ain't got nothing to do with God, ya know." Dark Star Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Dirty God, which originally premiered at the 2019 Rotterdam and Sundance Film Festivals. From Dutch filmmaker Sacha Polak, the film tells the story of a young British mother struggling to reclaim her life after a brutal acid attack. After facial surgery, her beauty is lost beneath the scars. Set in London, it stars Vicky Knight – a burn victim herself, in a stunning debut performance – as Jade. It's described as a "tragically beautiful" film telling a "story of human resilience that can't help but move you." Also starring Katherine Kelly, Eliza Brady-Girard, Rebecca Stone, Bluey Robinson, Dana Marineci, Tachia Newall, and Frieda Thiel. This film really does look exceptionally beautiful and meaningful, a touching story that can empower us to be more empathetic and understanding. Here's...

A young working-class woman in London barely has the mechanisms to cope with a horrific acid attack that’s left her face permanently scarred in “Dirty God,” the first English-language feature from Dutch director Sacha Polak. Neatly fitting into Polak’s liberatingly frank takes on female sexuality, the film boasts a stand-out performance from newcomer Vicky Knight and an unflinching portrait of a strong-willed yet immature protagonist facing a radical change in how the world looks at her as well as how she sees herself. While the script’s insistence on transforming the character from victim to resolute survivor doesn’t fully wash, its bold treatment of an unapologetic woman from the projects will play well on independent screens.
Never one to shy away from images traditionally considered unsettling, Polak opens with widescreen close-ups of acid-damaged flesh, the camera capturing the mass of ravaged, puckered tissue covered in shallow dendrite-like ridges.

How do you cope after an attack that leaves you visibly scarred for the rest of your life? This is the difficult question that director Sacha Polak looks to delve into with Dirty God. Alongside co-writer Susie Farrell, they craft a scenario wherein the victim of such horror is a pretty young woman in South London who’s done nothing to deserve a fate she cannot outrun. She can’t even isolate herself with friends and family until ready for public re-assimilation since there’s a toddler involved whose first word upon seeing her mother in the hospital was “monster.” Pair that with baby Rae’s (Eliza Brady-Girard) incessant crying due to a newfound unfamiliarity after returning home and you’ll begin to understand the arduous period of readjustment Jade (Vicky Knight) faces.
This isn’t some posh princess, though. Jade’s mother (Katherine Kelly’s Lisa) makes a living...
