For Late Night with the Devil star David Dastmalchian, all roads lead to and from Christopher Nolan.
In 2007, Dastmalchian was a struggling local theater actor in Chicago, and when Nolan’s The Dark Knight set up shop in the Windy City, he went through a circuitous casting process before eventually landing a part in his very first feature film. Dastmalchian played Thomas Schiff, a paranoid schizophrenic and former Arkham Asylum inmate that Heath Ledger’s The Joker disguised as his fellow honor guardsman during their infiltration of Commissioner Loeb’s funeral procession. When gunshots rang out and chaos ensued, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) cornered Schiff in an ambulance and then forcefully interrogated him in another location.

The Oscar-nominated director’s new movie Dune: Part Two has dominated the box office since it opened in theaters on March 1. The film has made over $500 million worldwide.
If you didn’t know, the first two Dune movies adapted the first book of Frank Herbert‘s series of novels.
However, a film adaptation of the next book, Dune Messiah, is yet to be announced.
In a recent interview, Denis addressed the possibility of making Dune 3 and revealed what will determine if he directs the film.

“I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me,” the filmmaker told Empire. “I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after Part One. We were already designing, writing, et cetera. But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop,...

Denis Villeneuve is making a promise to “Dune” fans: He’s only going to move forward with making a third movie, based on Frank Herbert’s “Dune Messiah” novel, if he knows for a fact it will be better than “Dune: Part Two.” That’s a lofty goal considering what a sensation the sequel has turned out to be. A hit with critics and audiences, Villeneuve’s epic has crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
“I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me,” Villeneuve recently told Empire magazine when the possibility of a third “Dune” came up. “I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after ‘Part One.’ We were already designing, writing, et cetera. Rebecca Ferguson is an incredible actress, who was last seen in Denis Villenueve’s Dune: Part Two. The actress’s role was significantly changed in the second movie, giving her more importance and authority than in the first movie, Dune.

Yet despite her brilliant acting prowess and her exceptional portrayal of Lady Jessica in the science fiction fantasy tale, fans have not liked how her character was changed in the movie. Even the Mission Impossible star was unhappy when the director informed her of a certain change in her character, despite him going against authenticity to give her more screen time.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is an adaptation of author Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi novel of the same name. However, given the sheer scale and scope of the novel, it is understandable that Villeneuve and his team took some creative liberties while adapting the source material for the big screen.

One of the major yet subtle changes made to the book’s story is in relation to one of the important supporting characters from the earlier portions of Paul Atreides, and his mother, Lady Jessica’s time on the desert planet Arrakis. Here is everything you need to know about the changes Villeneuve made to this character and why they were gender-swapped in the film.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series has successfully captivated audiences’ interest thanks to its visual effects, direction, and screenplay among other elements. Fans applauded the project for mostly remaining true to its source material, referring to the two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. However, the director decided to enhance its beauty by making significant changes in the movie which were different from the original material.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
One such intriguing change included tweaking Rebecca Ferguson’s role, who plays the role of Lady Jessica, mother of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides in the Dune series.

In a new interview with Screen Daily at a Qumra event in Doha, Qatar, Denis confirmed talk of a new film shot in Cameroon, a country she lived in as a child. Denis was raised in various countries in colonial French Africa, where her father was a civil servant, and has made at least two films about the experience with “Chocolat” and “White Material.”
Tentatively titled “The Fence,” the African-set movie will center on “four main characters, three men and a woman.” Three of them have been cast, though it’s unknown who they are at the moment.

Video-game-maker turned filmmaker Hideo Kojima is pointing to “Dune: Part Two” — and its premium large-screen experience, specifically — as the future of film.
The “Death Stranding” creator took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to applaud Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel. Kojima also admitted he was getting a little too comfortable with the idea of streaming movies on a phone or tablet. “Dune: Part Two,” however, was an exception for him — and it was an exceptional experience.
“Even as a movie buff, I was beginning to think it was time for me to start watching movies on my smartphone or tablet. However, when I watched ‘Dune: Part 2,’ my rigid ways of thinking crumbled like sand!” Kojima wrote. “It meticulously depicts the non-existent world of Arrakis, bringing it to life with unprecedented detail and realism. While portraying revolution and love, fear and awe on the same axis, it magnificently captivates destruction and aestheticism in beautiful layers.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has avoided the sequel trap and exceeded everyone’s expectations. The film improved upon the lore that the first film developed while also evolving the lead characters in complex and intriguing ways. Villeneuve has done the impossible with the two films as Frank Herbert’s novels were once deemed unadaptable.

Denis Villeneuve is talking about the “painful choices” he has had to make for Dune: Part Two while adapting the book and cutting the film. Meanwhile, actor Tim Blake Nelson is expressing he’s “heartbroken” after he learned he was edited out of the film’s final cut that premiered to $182.5M worldwide.
The film Dune is based on the 1965 science fiction novel of the same name created by Frank Herbert. In adapting the book to the big screen, the filmmaker told EW, “When you adapt, there’s always some kind of violence toward the original material. You have to change things, you have to bend, you have to make painful choices.”
Some of those choices for the sequel included eliminating Stephen McKinley Henderson’s character. Henderson played Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) mentor Thufir Haway who survives the massacre of House Atreides by House Harkonnen and continues to play a role in the book series.

French director Claire Denis is set to return to West Africa for her next feature film, an adaptation of late French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès’s 1980 work Black Battles With Dogs (Combat de nègre et de chiens).
“It’s a play written by a friend of mine a long time ago and directed by Patrice Chéreau on stage in the 80s. He was dying from AIDS and he wanted me to make a film out of it,” Denis told Deadline on the fringes of the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra meeting in Qatar.
She is planning to film in either Senegal or Cameroon.
Denis grew up in West Africa and set a number of her early films in the region, such as Chocolat (1988) and Beau Travail (1989). This will be her first major fiction feature shot on the African continent since the 2009 drama White Material, starring Isabelle Huppert as a coffee plantation...

Since the advent of DVDs and Blu-rays, extended cuts for movies have become pretty unanimous in Hollywood. These versions would often come with deleted scenes that were originally cut from the theatrical experience. However, this wasn’t the case with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which was released back in 2021, and unfortunately for fans, similar will be the case for the sequel.
Following Villeneuve’s decision to not incorporate what he gutted out from the theatrical version, fans now will never be able to live scenes of two characters, who didn’t make it to the final cut.

Just last summer it was learned Claire Denis would soon location-scout her new feature in Cameroon, where she grew up and would use as a central area for Chocolat and White Material. Because scoop sites were not exactly running through every contact for further info we’ve only now learned next details. Speaking to Screen Daily in Doha, Denis gave this film a tentative title, The Fence, and noted it centers on “four main characters, three men and a woman,” three of whom have been cast (actors currently unnamed).
This missing member might engender some rewrites, and in addition to certain location details being undetermined, Denis talked about the film in a curiously ambivalent manner:
“The script, I know it’s solidly built; there is something I could trust easily. But I realized since December, I have described them, I know the way they look, I could even describe their clothes.

Claire Denis is gearing up to shoot her next film The Fence [working title], an Africa-set feature that has a completed script.
Speaking to Screen at the Qumra event in Doha, Qatar, Denis said, “The script is finished; I have to do some corrections because I’m not sure about locations until today. One person is missing in the cast, so I might have to rewrite some parts.”
Denis sparsely described the project as “a film with four main characters, three men and a woman.” Three of the four cast members are attached, although Denis would not confirm names.

Rebecca Ferguson played the role of Lady Jessica, mother of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides in the Dune series. However, her role was significantly changed in Dune: Part Two than that of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel. The film director, Denis Villeneuve planned to make her character pregnant in the second movie which continued to let the former play a pivotal role in Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides’ journey.

This post contains spoilers for "Dune: Part Two."
"It doesn't matter a damned bit how pure and good the hero is. By just being he creates a power structure and so it's like a magnet: the iron filings, the corruptible, come in and things are done in the name of the leader."
So said "Dune" author Frank Herbert in a 1984 interview with the L.A. Reader, neatly summarizing the cautionary tale at the heart of his epic sci-fi trilogy. In Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve's recent two-part film adaptation, Herbert wanted to create "a charismatic leader, a messiah you would follow for all of the right reasons. He is loyal to his people, he's honorable, and he's true to his friends." For that charismatic protagonist to then launch a galactic holy war, knowing that it would cause the deaths of tens of billions of people, was...

With a script on the go, great early box office numbers in the can and key financiers up for it, a third Dune film – Dune: Messiah – is looking like a certainty.
Dune: Part Two is in cinemas right now and happily, everything looks to be going well for Denis Villeneuve’s big-budget slice of sci-fi cinema. The film is getting great reviews (here’s ours) and making plenty of cash at the box office too.
Our own Ryan Lambie called it ‘2024’s first truly great multiplex film’ and critics tend to be in agreement that the ever-reliant Villeneuve has done the business again.
Those good vibes seem to have extended as far as Legendary Entertainment, the film’s production company and co-financier. The company’s CEO, Josh Grode was asked this week about a third Dune film and he expressed confidence that it would happen, stating:

It’s honestly very impressive what people can do when they give their minds creative freedom. Director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is a prime example of what the human mind is capable of and how beautifully a book can be adapted into a movie.
And it’s not just us praising Dune: Part Two for its visuals. Several important people in high places also seem to agree with the statement and are now expecting a third part of the franchise. Well, Legendary Entertainment’s CEO thinks that there will be a few conditions that need to be fulfilled before they can start making Dune: Part Three.

The movie Dune: Part Two is already a huge success in theaters and we’re learning some new details about cast members who were cut out of the movie.
Director Denis Villeneuve made a movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 46 minutes, but the original version was going to be much longer.
Sadly, we likely won’t ever see a director’s cut as Denis doesn’t believe in making them.
“I’m a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead,” he told Collider. “Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out. I feel like a samurai opening my gut. It’s painful, so I cannot go back after that and create a Frankenstein and try to reanimate things that I killed. It’s too painful. When it’s dead, it’s dead, and it’s dead for a reason.

“Desert power.” That’s how Denis Villeneuve teases what’s to come at the end of 2021’s “Dune,” as Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atriedes looks out across the desert in awe as he sees a Fremen person riding a sandworm.
And Villeneuve does not disappoint. The director goes full white-knuckle thrill ride in its sequel, orchestrating a glorious sandworm riding sequence that took 44 days to shoot. It was the most complex thing Villeneuve had ever attempted to do. It needed to feel edgy, dangerous, exciting and real.
It took Villeneuve’s most-trusted collaborators to help him pull off the scene, in which Paul uses the thumper for the first time to draw a sandworm out from beneath the surface and mount the creature as Chani (Zendaya), Stilgar (Javier Bardem) and the Fremen look on.

“Dune: Part Two” features one of the starriest casts in recent memory. From Timothée Chalamet to Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista and more, there’s rarely a scene in the Denis Villeneuve-directed sequel that isn’t filled with star power. The cast was supposed to be even bigger, however, but the filmmaker had to make some cuts to the final edit that left at least one actor “heartbroken.”
Tim Blake Nelson, a regular of the Coen Brothers thanks to films such as “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” was announced as a cast member for “Dune: Part Two” in January 2023. He does not appear in the theatrical release.

Few things are more frustrating when you’re an actor than having your scenes cut from a project. Especially if the project in question is one of the year’s most celebrated releases. Unfortunately for Tim Blake Nelson, his part in Dune: Part Two is on the cutting room floor, and the film’s director, Denis Villeneuve, has no intention of sharing his scenes with audiences. It’s nothing personal; it’s just the way things shook out.
Speaking with Collider about editing the second chapter of his science-fiction opus, Villeneuve said he’s “a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead.” In other words, don’t count on the Blu-ray release for Dune: Part Two to have deleted scenes as part of the physical release’s bonus features. “Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out.

The blockbuster Dune: Part Two is nearly three hours long, but it could have been even longer. And director Denis Villeneuve says that any cut scenes will not be seen by the public.
“I’m a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead,” the director told Collider when asked if he will release deleted scenes from the film for its upcoming Blu-ray release. “Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out. French filmmaker Leos Carax discussed the sacred nature of the image and the challenge of retaining its power on the big screen in the digital age in an on-stage conversation at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event on Monday.
The filmmaker said he had transitioned to shooting in digital in his segment of the 2008 feature Tokyo!, one of his first works after the death of his beloved cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier, who died age 52 in 2003.

The director admitted that 15 years on, he is not a huge fan of shooting in digital.

For “Dune: Part Two,” Denis Villeneuve delved deep into the Arabian desert and spent almost a month shooting in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Oasis, which provided a substantial portion of the landscape of the desert planet Arrakis, home to the monstrous sandworms.

The film debuted with nearly a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. A major compliment it received is for the outstanding performances of its A-list cast. The cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and others.
Despite all the smooth sailing, Villeneuve dropped the bombshell about the toughest call he made in the sequel. Surprisingly, it wasn’t about giving Florence Pugh a blink-and-you-miss-it part.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 is a roaring success. The film is a hit with audiences and critics and is well on its way to smash the box office. What many people don’t know is that the star-studded cast ensemble for the film could have had more members. Marvel star Tim Blake Nelson had shot some scenes for the film which were later removed.

It took a village of Denis Villeneuve’s most trusted artisans to pull off “Dune: Part Two’s” epic Harkonnen arena fight scene.
As epic as its predecessor, Villeneuve’s sequel raises the bar with striking visuals. None is more jaw-dropping than Feyd-Rautha’s (Austin Butler) celebration sequence. The grand fight occurs early on in the film as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and Lady Margot Fenring (Lea Seydoux) join the inhabitants of Giedi Prime to watch. It was up to cinematographer Greig Fraser who shot the sequence on black-and-white infrared to deliver Villeneuve’s vision.
Fraser was no stranger to using infrared lighting.
He had used it on 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” “It’s the same light the security camera uses, and you don’t see it. So, my fascination with infrared started because our eyes can’t see it,...

One of the most notable features in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is the black-and-white aesthetics used in Austin Butler’s scenes.
