Hollywood studios have long made a point of promoting tentpole movies at the Cannes Film Festival, using the Cote d’Azur location to highlight their A-list titles with splashy promotional campaigns.
A similar, if less flashy, version of the big Cannes launch took place Tuesday for The Americas, the long-awaited premium wildlife documentary series from BBC and NBCUniversal. Producers of the series, narrated by Tom Hanks, revealed how their team used cutting-edge technology to take viewers inside the lives of critters from across the continent.
The footage, screened at international television confab MIPTV, showed extraordinary sights, including a bear making a treacherous half-mile descent down a crumbling cliff face, with two cubs clinging to her for life, images captured by a drone camera.

The producing team behind Tom Hanks’ upcoming wildlife documentary series “The Americas” prepped for five years and made 180 expeditions to deliver the 10-episode show.
For Universal Television Alternative Studios (Utas), who are co-producing the series with BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, “The Americas” represents a big swing: it’s the first time the network is entering the wildlife documentary series space and, according to Utas president Toby Gorman, the show is also the most expensive unscripted project in NBCUniversal’s history.
“We were collectively starting to internally discuss whether this is a genre we wanted to enter,” Gorman recalls during a panel previewing the series at Mip TV in Cannes. When Mike Gunton, creative director of BBC Studios Factual, happened to knock on Gorman’s door, it felt like “kismet.”

Execs on NBC’s The Americas were seeking “the American version of David Attenborough” when booking Tom Hanks for the upcoming epic wildlife series.
BBC Studios’ Mike Gunton, a storied natural history exec who has worked on the likes of Planet Earth and Dynasties, said he had “written down who I wanted to do the music and who I wanted to be the narrator” when embarking on making the show nearly five years ago, and had scribbled “‘Tom Hanks?’.”
“That’s who I wanted,” he added at MIPTV. “He had such curiosity and his talent is so immense. He can turn his voice and delivery to every single nuance to the sorts of tone we see in all these stories.”
Toby Gorman, who runs Universal Television Alternative Studio, labeled the show “the most expensive unscripted project in NBCUniversal’s history.”

The BBC has come under fire from the scientific community after a David Attenborough documentary about a recently discovered underwater creature only briefly mentioned the fossil finder who found it.
More than 2,000 signatures have been recorded on a change.org petition to have the pliosaur named after Philip Jacobs, who was named only as a “fossil enthusiast” towards the end of Attenborough and the Great Sea Monster.
“This particular find is being quoted as being one of the most significant fossils to have ever been found,” wrote Anna Morell, who began the petition. “It is unique. It is huge. It is significant. And yet Philip’s name is being effectively airbrushed from the historical record when it comes to this important find. Much of the global promotional media fails to mention him.”
Jacobs posted on Facebook following the program, writing: “I’ve been completely airbrushed out of my own discovery,...

Upfronts are always a hectic time, but this year it’s even more so because of the writers strike that began May 2. Writers and many actors are sitting out the upfront presentations in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. The promise of WGA pickets surrounding all major events spurred Netflix to make a hasty decision to switch to a virtual presentation rather than an in-person event at the company’s Paris Theater.
As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, Disney, CBS, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC, Fox, the CW and other major players in the upfront.

Freshman drama “Quantum Leap” is taking a quantum leap to Tuesdays, as NBC unveiled a mostly strike-proof fall schedule that features three new series (two dramas and a comedy) and a crowded midseason bench.
The Peacock net’s lineup is heavy as always on football and Dick Wolf: And even more so on the pigskin, as NBC’s new deal to cover Big Ten football kicks in with a new Saturday showcase. But with few changes in store, the network will rely on established series to launch its freshman entries.
NBC will use unscripted mainstay “The Voice” on Mondays to launch the new Jesse L. “Lopez vs. Lopez” and “Law and Order: Organized Crime” will also officially be returning, though they’re not set to premiere until midseason. The Americas, an epic natural history series, was first ordered more than three years ago by then-NBC boss Paul Telegdy.

Apple TV+’s groundbreaking Prehistoric Planet will return for season two on May 22, 2023. Ahead of its premiere, the streaming service released the first teaser trailer for the award-winning natural history event series.
Season two will feature dinosaurs that have never been seen on the screen, including:
Isisaurus – An Indian sauropod that made its home in an extreme volcanic region known as the Deccan Traps, laying eggs in volcanic heated terrain. Pectinodon – a fierce hunter and fond parent, this bird-like North American feathered dinosaur was part of the troodontid family. A sharp-clawed, long-legged predator, it was an adaptable hunter, its teeth and jaws suggesting that many sorts of small animals would have been on the menu. Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx – The biggest creatures ever to soar the skies, these gargantuan pterosaurs (prehistoric flying reptiles) were the size of a giraffe or small aircraft and are some of “Prehistoric Planet’s” most charismatic characters.

Sir David Attenborough has shared the one regret he has about his career in global nature filmmaking.
The renowned documentarian is marking the 69th anniversary of his first television appearance this year.
In a change from his usual explorations of global flora and fauna, his forthcoming series Wild Isles will focus solely on British wildlife.
During a new interview, the 96-year-old broadcaster gave some insight into how his legacy as an internationally focused conservationist came to be.
He explained that early on in his career, he had been encouraged to focus on wildlife overseas while the BBC’s Natural History Unit in Bristol would handle any projects that dealt with nature in Britain.
“There was a chap trying to establish Bristol then as a centre of natural history,” he told The Telegraph in the interview, published on Saturday (18 February).
“He knew which strings to pull and I could see things coming to a head.
