Exclusive: We’re getting an exclusive look at the first footage and key art from Hulu original The Artful Dodger, Disney’s Australian series starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster, David Thewlis and Maia Mitchell. It’s set to premiere Wednesday, November 29 on Hulu in the U.S.
Billed as an irreverent follow-up to Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist exploring the adult double life of the famous prince of thieves, the series is set in 1850s Australia where Jack Dawkins, aka young rogue The Artful Dodger (Brodie-Sangster), is now all grown up and has transferred his skills as a pickpocket to the nimble fingers of a surgeon.
His past returns to haunt him with the arrival of Fagin (Thewlis), luring him back into a world of crime, while the local governor’s daughter (Mitchell), who is determined to become the colony’s first female surgeon, appears to be a greater threat, at least to his heart.

Screen Producers Australia has named the members of its two advisory boards for the upcoming Screen Forever conference.
The programming advisory board, made up of a group of producers, directors and writers, will help set the strategic direction for the February event, aiding in the creation of a program that will reflect the challenges and opportunities facing the industry in the wake of the pandemic.
This year, Spa has also enlisted the help of a market and financing advisory board for the first time, comprised of representatives from broadcasters and screen organisations across Australia, Canada and the United States. The aim is to maximise the global business opportunities available to delegates at the Spa Connect market.
“After such an unprecedented year, having the guidance of two dynamic and multi-disciplined boards who will focus on the key pillars of Screen Forever – discovery and deal-making – will no doubt pay dividends for our delegates,...

Marta Dusseldorp in ‘Wentworth’ (Photo credit: Sarah Enticknap).
In a world away from A Place to Call Home, Marta Dusseldorp has donned the prison track suit with a guest role in Foxtel’s Wentworth, which resumes shooting this week.
Her character Sheila Bausch, a senior figure in the True Path cult, is on remand, charged with the murder of nine people at the cult’s retreat.
Described as highly intelligent, charismatic and manipulative, Sheila worked as the personal secretary for True Path’s founder Dr Mendel (Brian Vriends).
The Fremantle production re-starts after shutting down on March 23, just before a planned hiatus. The show has the advantage of being shot in its own large building in Melbourne, which has the flexibility of moving scenes set in a small cell to a bigger cell.
Executive producer Jo Porter, who is Fremantle’s director of scripted, said: “We have carefully adjusted our...

Chris Oliver-Taylor.
The government’s review of local content quotas should result in a funding and regulatory framework that protects Australian stories, voices and jobs, according to Fremantle CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor.
The drama quota for the commercial free-to-air broadcasters should continue and be extended to the ABC and Sbs, which should get extra funding to meet these obligations, he says.
The exec expects the government to impose a local content quota on the streaming networks. He advocates that Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Amazon should be required to each commission about 90 hours of Australian content each year.
“If we could get the big international SVoDs to add a further 360 hours of drama into the Australian marketplace, as well as maintaining the quotas on the commercial networks and imposing quotas on the ABC and Sbs, then Australian audiences and the sector will be served as it should be,” he says.

The underlying novel by Richard Flanagan, published in 2013, chronicles a century dominated by war, with the forced labor on the Thai-Burma Railway as its dramatic heart. Ellie Madritsch and Ana Jimenez.
When Fremantle director of scripted Jo Porter started out as a producer more than 20 years ago, shows such as All Saints and Blue Heelers ran for 42 episodes a year and there were plenty of opportunities for emerging writers.
With most dramas now limited to four to six episodes, Porter worries there are far fewer avenues for writers to break into the business.
Her solution is Next, a Fremantle initiative which will serve as a talent escalator for writers who have at least one credit.
Spearheaded by Fremantle drama coordinators Ellie Madritsch and Ana Jimenez, the program aims to fund a minimum of three projects – short-form digital content or podcasts – next year and in each of the following years as a stepping stone to long-form projects.
“These platforms can be pathways and proving grounds for writers, enabling them to build worlds and connect with audiences,” Porter tells If.

The tome follows a shipload of migrant workers fleeing from a pandemic-stricken UK who seek a fresh start in Australia. For nine-year-old Cleary the journey promises adventure, for former nurse Billie it’s a chance to put a shameful mistake behind her, while struggling schoolteacher Tom hopes for a brighter future.
But when a crew member is murdered and people start falling gravely ill, the Steadfast descends into chaos. Trapped on the ship, the trio must join forces to survive the journey and its aftermath.

Chris Oliver-Taylor on the set of ‘Neighbours’.
Since taking the helm of Fremantle’s Asia Pacific operations last September, Chris Oliver-Taylor has been busy realigning the Australasian business.
Adhering to Fremantle’s global mantra as “the place creatives call home,” the CEO has significantly upped the drama development budget and is prepared to commission blind scripts, i.e., before a network is aboard.
Oliver-Taylor and his team led by Jennifer Collins, the Australian director of content, are discussing projects with a host of A-grade writers including Robert Connolly, Giula Sandler, Katherine Thomson, Tommy Murphy and Matt Cameron.
“We want to work with world-class writers, predominantly but not exclusively Australian,” he tells If in his first interview since moving over from Matchbox Pictures, succeeding Ian Hogg.
“The second part of the strategy is having great IP, whether it’s a book, a play or an original idea. The third is a strong financial strategy.

Peter Weir’s 1975 film “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” much like the geologic formation named in its title, casts a very long shadow. Based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay, the movie adaptation tells the story of three young women and a teacher from Appleyard College, who go missing during a Valentine’s Day outing in 1900.
Considered a masterpiece of Australian filmmaking and an achievement in Weir’s early career, the movie created a haunting Victorian aesthetic that is still referenced in films, fashion, and other art forms to this day. Because of this impact, the movie looked as if it would be one of the few classics that would remain untouched by the latest wave of remakes and reboots. Then a group of women came along to change that.

Amazon is coming for the classics. The streaming outfit is now taking on Peter Weir’s twisted thriller “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” care of a brand-new six-part series. Like Weir’s film, the series is based on Joan Lindsay’s cult novel of the same name, which first spawned Weir’s take back in 1975. This new one doesn’t change the book’s setting — an isolated Australian boarding school in the year 1900 — or its pervasive sense of dread.
Featuring former “Game of Thrones” star Natalie Dormer, along with Lola Bessis, Yael Stone, Anna McGahan, Sibylla Budd, Ruby Rees, and Inez Curro, the series looks to have plenty to intrigue fans of creepy cinema, unsolved mysteries, and the strange magic that unspools when a bunch of hormonal young ladies are thrown together. At the secluded Appleyard College (led by Dormer as headmistress), students adore an annual tradition that involves a picnic at the eponymous Hanging Rock.

Peter Weir's 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (1975). Both Weir's film and the FremantleMedia mini-series are adaptations of Joan Lindsay's 1967 novel..
An Australian female director is set to join FremantleMedia.s Picnic at Hanging Rock, following on from industry criticism over the hire of a foreign director to shoot the series.
The six-part mini, to screen on Foxtel, was originally to be helmed by Canadian director Larysa Kondracki and Aussie Michael Rymer.
However, the Australian Directors' Guild.levelled criticism at FremantleMedia over its import of Kondracki. It opposed her visa, arguing it did not meet the required Net Employment Test and said it understood no female directors working in Australia had been approached for the role..
FremantleMedia announced in late December that a third, local female director would also shoot one episode of the series and receive a sole credit.
