Normally, the SXSW Film Festival award winners are handed out during a lively ceremony at the end of the first weekend, but this year required some improvisation. When the SXSW became the first major film event to cancel in the face of global pandemic, it was unclear what would happen to the hundreds of films and filmmakers primed for the late March festivities.
While many filmmakers were left struggling to figure out their next moves, the festival’s leadership opted to hand out awards to the films set to premiere at the festival, with the juries announced weeks earlier. SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson and her team made the decision to “continue and expand to all the juried competitions, if the majority of the filmmakers opted in and juries were available.”

Janina Gavankar stars alongside Ben Affleck in Gavin O'Connor's The Way Back, in theaters now, and she tells The Hollywood Reporter In Studio she was working on the drama while simultaneously prepping her short film Stucco with her creative partner Russo Schelling.
The eerie short, Gavankar's directorial debut that was selected for this year's SXSW Midnight Shorts competition and premiered on THR last month, is a left-of-center horror film dealing with guilt, depression and the feeling of stasis. While co-writing, co-producing and co-directing the 17-minute film, Gavankar also stars as the lead, playing a woman dealing with agoraphobia who ...

On her last day of filming “The Way Back,” Janina Gavankar says Ben Affleck had a funny, if awkward, question for her.
“He didn’t know how to ask me this, but he was like, ‘Where did you…? Where did you…?’ And I finished his sentence. I was like, ‘Where did I come from?’” Gavankar told Variety. “I said, ‘Ben, I’ve been [acting] for 15 years. I’ve been marginalized for 15 years. There was no way I would get to act across from you in any of these years until now.’”
Gavankar, 39, plays Affleck’s estranged wife in the Gavin O’Connor-directed feature, a relationship strained by both addiction and personal tragedy.
And if Affleck’s question landed as slightly awkward, it’s because for over a decade, Gavankar has built up her resume with a slew of TV roles and various creative endeavors, in everything from music to gaming.
