John McNaughton, enfante-terrible of the BBFC thanks to his stunning 1986 debut feature Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, returns to genre film making after two decades away from horror (his Masters of Horror episode in 2006 is his only “horror” credit in 25 years), with Can’t Come Out to Play, a psychological thriller starring Britain’s very own Samantha Morton and everyone’s favourite Superman villain, Michael Shannon, who play married medical professionals Katharine and Richard Young who keep their sick son Andy isolated from the outside world in their remote countryside house.
However that isolation is broken when Maryann, following the death of her parents, moves in with her grandparents just down the road. Having left all she knows behind and feeling alone, she eventually befriends Andy...

Despite director John McNaughton’s best efforts, The Harvest is plagued by a host of cinematic parasites that eat through every scene until only an empty, shallow husk remains. Although its theatrical poster showcases a quaint little house that’s engulfed in raging flames, the actual film proves to be quite timid, blandly underacted, and exhaustively flat – a false representation of the chaos that’s dangled in front of our faces. That’s not to say misrepresentation ruins The Harvest outright, but the movie on-hand is about as lifeless as they come, and puts this poor Bessie out to pasture within mere minutes. I never thought I’d see the day where I wanted More out of Michael Shannon, but that’s why I never say never.

At one time or another, we’ve all felt we’ve had the worst parents in the world. We have our reasons, but watch The Harvest (2013) and you’ll quickly reevaluate your thinking. The question arises… what is a child’s life worth and how far will you go to save that life when certain death rears its unfriendly head?
The Harvest tells the story of a seriously ill boy named Andrew, bed-ridden and bored out of his mind. He’s not allowed to leave the house, play baseball, have friends or go to school, and is barely allowed to leave his room. Andrew, played by Charlie Tahan, is weak and can barely stand on his own, but he still has desires just like any boy his age. These desire have been successfully subdued by his over-protective, borderline psychotic mother Katherine, played by Samantha Morton. Then a misunderstood, rebellious girl...

Guests at the garden party in the upcoming creature feature, Stung, will have to replace their EpiPens with swords and flamethrowers if they want to survive the giants wasps from below that are featured in the film's first trailer. Also included in our latest video round-up is a boy next door with a creepy caretaker in John McNaughton's The Harvest, as well as Helen McCrory's tour of her character's eerily decorated mansion from the upcoming second season of Showtime's Penny Dreadful.
Stung: "Mrs. Perch, an elderly, wealthy lady from rural America, is throwing a fancy garden party at her remote country villa. Same procedure as every year - except this time her illegally imported plant fertilizer seeps into the ground. Subsequently, a local species of killer wasps that usually lay their eggs into other insects mutates into 7 ft tall predators. And the celebrating upper class company provides...

Harvest Home: McNaughton’s Return Yields Blighted Crop
Fans of director John McNaughton, known for his gruesome cult classic Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1990), as well as that tawdry neo-noir Wild Things (1998), will be happy to realize he’s returned to filmmaking with The Harvest, his first feature film since 2001. An indie thriller written by first time screenwriter Stephen Lancellotti, it’s headlined by the likes of Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton. While there are several standout moments in the film, it’s constantly marred by an underwhelming screenplay that has a few too many inconsistencies to support the development of tension or believability. The insistent need for extravagant twists undermines the logic of the narrative, something unnecessary here considering the intensity of the performances.

If Michael Shannon wasn't hamming it up enough for you in Man of Steel, then maybe it's time you see what he can do with a hokey, campy thriller called The Harvest. In what feels like a made-for-tv movie, albeit maybe intentionally, the first trailer for this film shows what appears to be the start of another lovely The Fault in Our Stars-esque relationship between a young girl and a bed-ridden, ill boy. But that's until the friendly girl learns that her new next door friend's parents (Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton) are hiding some sinister secrets next door. This looks like standard, forgettable thriller fare to me. Watch? Here's the first trailer for John McNaughton's The Harvest from Collider: The Harvest is directed by John McNaughton (Henry: Portait of a Serial Killer) and written by newcomer Stephen Lancellotti. Maryann (Natasha Calis) moves in with her grandparents after she’s orphaned.

The Harvest
Written by Stephen Lancellotti
Directed by John McNaughton
USA, 2013
The Harvest is a modern gothic horror set in small-town America. On one hand embracing the mythology and horror of gothic sensibilities, the film also utilizes naturalism to create a sense of comfort and to help root emotions in reality. Katherine (Samantha Morton) and Richard (Michael Shannon) are a married couple caring for an ailing son, Andy (Charlie Tahan). Their apparent familial bliss is disrupted by the arrival of a pre-adolescent neighbor, Maryann (Natasha Calis). While Maryann’s intentions are nothing but cordial, the couple is wary of her curiosity, and tensions rise as she continually subverts their desires to stay away from their home. Maryann’s quest for truth and Andy’s friendship unravels a dark stain on the American family.
Illness is the central catalyst for the film’s tension as Andy’s sickness has become the...

This is my tenth year attending the Fantasia Film Festival, though it is my first with a press pass. Gone are the days where I pay for tickets and try to snatch interview subjects for a blog no one really reads. This year’s line-up will certainly be keeping me busy. Here are five to which I’m particularly looking forward.

Deadline reports that Peter Fonda (Ghost Rider, Race with the Devil) will be joining Samantha Morton and Michael Shannon in The Harvest. Natasha Calis, Charlie Tahan, Leslie Lyles, and Meadow Williams also appear in the film written by Stephen Lancellotti.

It's been a really long time since Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer director John McNaughton made a horror film. Hell, it's been over a decade since he's made any kind of film for that matter. Thankfully both of those facts are about to change.
Variety reports that after an 11-year absence from the big screen, McNaughton is set to return for psychological horror thriller The Harvest, for which Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton have come aboard to star alongside Natasha Calis.
Living Out Loud Prods. is financing The Harvest for under $10 million, while Elephant Eye Films will handle international sales. In addition to Calis (The Possession), the flick co-stars Charlie Tahan (Frankenweenie), Leslie Lyles and Meadow Williams.

NEW YORK -- Madonna and Guy Oseary's Maverick Red production genre label and Angel Baby Entertainment are producing Digger, a grave-digging horror film directed by Angel Baby partner John A. Gallagher.
The feature, set for a late-summer production in Connecticut, is the second co-production between the new Maverick Films genre arm and Angel Baby. The first, Slamdance horror screenplay competition winner Slaughter, from writers Nathan Brookes and Bobby Darby, begins production in July.
Digger follows Joshua Bauer, a man forced to dig graves by hand as a youth who seeks revenge through a brutal killing spree. The producers hope to launch Bauer as a new horror icon.
Angel Baby's Gregory Segal and Gallagher will serve as producers with Maverick Films' Oseary, Mark Morgan and Eric Thompson. Cheri Wozniak, who brought the project into the new horror label, will executive produce. The screenplay is written by Stephen Lancellotti.
Gallagher's directing credits include Blue Moon, starring Ben Gazzara, which won a best feature award at the Avignon/New York Film Festival, and The Deli, starring Gretchen Mol and Chris Noth.
