Since August 1967 paraplegic due to a swimming accident. 1970 Abitur at the special school for the physically handicapped in Birkenwerder. 1971 to 1975 German studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin, 1980 doctorate at the Central Institute for Literary History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR.
1981 to 1990 cultural-political-scientific assistant at the Berlin House for Cultural Work. 1976 to 1990 literary critic, since 1992 published several volumes of poetry. Since 1995 freelance expert for barrier-free living.
1990 founding president of the General Association for the Disabled in Germany "Für Selbstbestimmung und Würde" e. V. (ABiD), since 1999 chairman of the Berlin Association for the Disabled (BBV).
Until 1989 member of the SED, the FDGB and the FDJ, since 1990 member of the PDS. March to October 1990 member of the Volkskammer.
Member of the Bundestag October 1990 to 1994, 1998 to 2002 and since 2005.
