The looming threat of the extraordinarily rapid urbanization and development of China at the expense of its people has been one of the favorite themes in Chinese independent films and documentaries. Director Wu Lang adds a poetic and esthetic element to the discourse with his film “Absence”, that premiered at Berlinale in the festival's Encounters section, following a previous short film with the same title, a similar plot and the same high-profile cast including Lee Kang-Sheng (best-known for his frequent collaborations with Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-Liang) and Li Meng.
Absence is screening at Five Flavours
Han Jiangyu (Lee Kang-Sheng) is back in town after serving 10 years in prison, due to his connection with a local real estate crook and he timidly tries to reconnect with his past and figure out what happened during his absence. British No. 1 Katie Boulter leads the list of nominations for the Wta Most Improved Player of the Year award alongside four other players.
This distinction is bestowed upon a player ranked inside the Top 100 and who showed substantial improvement throughout the season. Improvement in this case is attributed to form, results, and ranking. Boulter has been honored in this category thanks to her best-ever season on tour.
The 27-year-old started the season playing on the Itf circuit and ranked World No. 136. She excelled at that level winning one title from three finals. It was during the grass swing when Boulter made the whole world take notice of her talent.
She won the Wta 250 in Nottingham - her first title at the Tour level - in the historic all-British final. That result gave Boulter the blueprint to break the world's Top 50 for the first time thanks to third-round finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open.

It’s a family affair for filmmaker Wang Jialai, taking a closer look at her mother and grandmother in feature debut “Paragate,” now showing at documentary festival IDFA. But she is not done just yet. She is currently also developing a new hybrid documentary under the working title “La Revenante” (“The Revenant”).
“It talks about both of my parents and about their religion: My mother is a Buddhist and my father is a Christian. They are both very spiritual and I am trying to understand how they became this way. I think they both led a very difficult life, so they needed this spiritual support,” she reveals to Variety.
“At this point, my mother couldn’t live without religion. She has nothing else. The Goddess of Mercy [known as Guanyin] and her Buddhist master are her family now.”
In the new film, she is hoping to approach religion “from the inside,” Wang says.

Exclusive: Executive Producer Dani Melia describes how “a scrappy team” that made filmmaker Lulu Wang’s acclaimed low-budget feature The Farewell joined forces with Blossom Films’ Nicole Kidman and Per Saari to make “this big international production” Expats for Prime Video.
Melia tells me how she and Wang had “long talked about wanting to continue working together” after making The Farewell.
Then, while they were promoting the movie in Australia, Kidman approached Wang about directing an adaptation of Janice Y.K. Lee’s book The Expatriates.
Wang was excited, and Melia recalls the director telling her: ”I need to find a way to do this with you and the rest of the crew who did The Farewell. I want my creative team onboard, and I think this should be our next thing.”
Melia says that quite a few creatives from The Farewell ended up making the leap with them.

San Sebastian premiere ‘A Journey in Spring’ takes on the nature of life, say debuting Taiwanese directors Tzu-Hui Peng and Ping-Wen Wang.
“I have a very close relationship with my family. They ground me. Losing them is my deepest fear, but it’s birth and death, come and go,” admits Wang.
Peng adds: “We can only learn how to cherish things after we experience regrets.”
Such melancholic takes echo their protagonist’s experience as well: an older man who lives with his wife somewhere in Taipei. When she passes away, he tries his best to ignore it – also by hiding her body in an old freezer. But when his estranged son finally returns home, with his new partner, Khim-Hok has to acknowledge her death.
Jason King, Kuei-Mei Yang, Wei-Hua Lan, Shu-Wei Chang, Chiasui Chen and Jack Kao act in the film, produced by Being Film and Art Co.

The collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s $40 billion crypto empire shocked the world with its speed and scale. In mere days, the company he founded, Ftx, fell from its perch as a top cryptocurrency exchange and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Customers who deposited funds on Ftx — sometimes their life savings — learned that billions had gone missing. A viral tweet from a crypto executive read: “The insanity of Theranos, speed of Lehman and scale of Enron.”
What are Bankman-Fried’s charges and his alleged criminal conduct?
Next week, Bankman-Fried will finally face the music.

It wasn't a blockbuster to appease the masses, but the Wta Tour served another thrilling week of action with Maria Sakkari and Xiyu Wang clinching the two titles on offer this past week.
Sakkari grabbed her second career title in Guadalajara , four years after her very first success on the red clay in Rabat. China's Wang joined the winners' podium for the first time, streaking to win the Guangzhou 250 in front of her home fans.

The 2023 Guadalajara Open was a bit of a lull for most Top 10 players who chose not to play this year due to scheduling concerns. Tennis fans voiced their frustration at the calendar slot allocated for one of the most prestigious events.
To put a bit of context into how badly affected this tournament was in terms of withdrawals, the qualifying draw had a shortage of entrants because a host of lower-ranked players earned direct slots in the main draw.

Exclusive: Filmmaker Lulu Wang’s The Farewell had opened to acclaim at Sundance when Nicole Kidman got in touch and said, “I have this book that I optioned and you’re really the only director that I want to make this.”
Wang was stunned.
“I had just premiered The Farewell, which is a very small movie, and I wasn’t thinking that I wanted to go into television but that I really need to keep figuring out what my voice is,” Wang recalls.
She laughed. “But when Nicole Kidman comes to you and says, ‘I’ll let you do whatever you want with it, you’re the only director — take one episode, take them all — let’s just talk’ [you listen].”
Wang went away and read Janice Y.K. Lee’s 2016 novel The Expatriates, which is about three women, primarily, with disparate experiences of living in Hong Kong, the the former British colony.

Ray Price, a respected producer of indie filmmaking, died July 16 from heart failure after a long battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his long-term partner Meg Madison. He was 75 years old.
Price launched his film career in 1972, managing the Berkeley storefront theater the Rialto, and went on to build with Allen Michaan Renaissance Theaters, an independent art film chain that became one of the largest (33 at its peak) in the Bay Area and was later sold to the Landmark Theatre circuit.
A tough negotiator and exacting exhibitor, under Price’s stewardship, Renaissance Theaters were renowned for redesigning marketing materials, from posters to press books — designs that fledgling distributors often adopted when the films hadn’t found success in other markets.
At a time when most top arthouse distributors focused on established auteurs from Europe and Asia, Renaissance Theaters exploded those norms by programming new American directors like Martin Scorsese and John Cassavetes.

Wanda Investment, a subsidiary of the privately-owned Chinese property giant Dalian Wanda, has sold an 8.3% stake in Wanda Film Holding for RMB2.2 billion ($306 million).
Wanda Film, which is listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange, operates China’s largest circuit of multiplexes and retains a stake in Hollywood producer Legendary Entertainment (“Dune”).

“When the LAPD Blows Up Your Neighborhood” by director Nathan Truesdell won TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival Industry Award Wednesday night at The Culver Theater in Culver City, California.
Truesdell, who was also a producer and cinematographer on the Oscar-nominated doc “Ascension,” documented the disastrous LAPD operation of 2021 that devastated South Central after police accidentally blew up a truck full of confiscated fireworks. The 19-minute doc follows local residents, many of whom are still homeless two years later.
“For its experimental, bold truth-telling and for pushing the form of what a documentary can be while balancing tremendous narrative tension, this film brings to light issues of oppression while challenging us to find solutions,” the festival’s jury said in a statement explaining their decision.

New York, July 8 (Ians) Researchers have found that addiction to cocaine or alcohol use disorders can lead to long lasting changes in the brain and also cause cognitive decline.
The study led by a team from the Texas A&m University School of Medicine showed that these substances of abuse can detrimentally affect people’s cognitive flexibility — the ability to adapt and switch between different tasks or strategies.
Although previous research has hinted at this connection, the underlying reasons for this cognitive impairment remain elusive.
Cognitive flexibility is a crucial element in various domains of our life, including academic achievement, employment success and transitioning into adulthood.
As we age, this flexibility plays an important role in mitigating cognitive decline.
A deficiency in cognitive flexibility, however, is linked to academic deficits and a lower quality of life.

Sofia Kenin followed up the upset win over Coco Gauff with another strong performance to win back-to-back matches on the Grand Slam level for the first time since 2021.
The last time Kenin won back-to-back matches on the Grand Slam level was back in 2021 at Roland Garros. After beating Gauff in round one and now Xinyu Wang in round two, the American finally got that monkey off her back.
It was another solid performance from the former Grand Slam champion who will be back in the top 100 on the Wta Tour after the 2023 Wimbledon . The opening set was a very close one as Wang managed to hang in there with some really solid play.
She didn't have too many aces but did have more winners than errors which is a good way to keep yourself in play. She actually outplayed Kenin in that regard as she had the same amount of winners but one mistake less.

Mirra Andreeva recorded her first-ever Wimbledon main draw win after beating Xiyu Wang from China.
Mirra Andreeva is the name that everyone has been talking about for some time now. The Tennis Phenom of the Wta Tour, the Prodigy, the new Coco Gauff, and many other names have been given to this 16-year-old sensation from Russia.
After proving herself on the junior level, and winning some Itf tournaments, Andreeva competed at the Madrid Open, making it to the fourth round before being stopped by the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka .
A few weeks later, the teenager played on the big stage again, this time going through the qualifying at Roland Garros , and subsequently reaching the third round where she was eliminated by fellow teenager Coco Gauff .
Losing only to two Top 10 players in the season isn't a bad resume, and that's the resume that the 16-year-old sensation entered the 2023 Wimbledon qualifying with.

“Nai Nai & Wai Po” was selected as a finalist in this year’s ShortList Film Festival, presented by TheWrap. You can watch the films and vote for your favorite here.
“Nai Nai & Wai Po,” (“Grandma and Grandma”), one of the finalists of TheWrap’s 2023 ShortList Film Festival, offers nothing less definitive than life itself. Directed by Sean Wang and starring his grandmothers, the 16-minute feature chronicles a week in the life of his elders as they dance, cook and fart their way through the days and nights in the last lap of their lives.
The picture, which premiered at the SXSW festival and was awarded the Jury Prize and Audience Award, is focused on the mundane, an arm-wrestling match between the 83- and 94-year-old protagonists, one of them reading the newspaper with a magnifying glass, or a moment of dancing partially to keep up with exercise since “Old people can’t afford to fall.

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continued his right-wing media tour on Wednesday with an appearance on Newsmax, during which he claimed that the Chinese government is developing race-based biological weapons.
“We know that the Chinese are developing ethnic bio-weapons. Bio-weapons that are designed to attack people of certain racial types. And we’re doing the same thing. We’ve been collecting Chinese DNA. We’ve been collecting Russian DNA specifically for that. [This] arms race is a catastrophe,” Kennedy told host Greta Van Susteren. The presidential hopeful provided no evidence to substantiate his claim.

It was the night of the 67th Academy Awards when a Vera Wang-clad Sharon Stone stepped on stage to present the Best Costume Design Oscar, the second category in an evening most remembered for its Forrest Gump lovefest. The second such picture, Trevor, would have its moment later when the Live-Action Short race resolved itself in a shocking tie. Maria Sakkari started her 2023 Nottingham Open with a first-round win over Xiyu Wang from China.
Switching from one surface to the other is never easy for tennis players, especially, if it's a switch from the slowest surface on the Wta Tour to the fastest. Yet, when things are not going well on the red dirt, it may be the grass where the player returns to the winning ways.
And that was surely the case for Sakkari. Entering the 2023 Nottingham Open, the Greek lost in her last two matches after she was beaten by Marketa Vondrousova in Rome and then lost to another Czech player, Karolina Muchova at the Roland Garros.
In the first round of the Wta 250 grass-court tournament in Nottingham, the top seed was drawn against Xiyu Wang from China, a player that she lost to in their only meeting that happened at the 2022 US Open.

“The game had this really naturalistic feel to it, and that’s what we wanted to bring to this new medium,” explains Alex Wang of his work on the HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us” starring Pedro Pascal. The visual effects supervisor brought the apocalypse to life by imbuing his digital creations with a sense of realism and subtlety, which is a rarity in this genre. “We really wanted to do something that was different,” he explains. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Wang admits that with any type of apocalyptic aesthetic, it’s easy to “turn the knob to 11” with the visuals. So in order to capture the more natural look that the series required, he frequently took a step back to ask: “How can we tell the story with just 20 brush strokes?” He says that developing visuals “with intention” generally held the answers. For instance, instead of...

Check the label on that garment hanging in your closet. If it reads “Made in China,” there’s a chance it was stitched together by one of the characters in Wang Bing’s documentary Youth (Spring), or someone like them.
Youth (Spring) – one of two documentaries admitted into main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, which hadn’t welcomed a documentary into that prestige category in almost 20 years – was filmed over a five-year period in China’s Zhili City, known as the country’s capital of clothing manufacture. Every year young people from rural areas in Anhui and other provinces pour into the urban center looking for work. Thousands of privately owned garment “workshops” stand ready to employ them, or perhaps we should say exploit them.

Wang Bing’s moving documentary follows young workers as they laugh, fight and question their bosses while undertaking a season of brutally hard work
Charlie Chaplin’s frantic production-line factory worker in Modern Times is a ghostly presence in this giant, immersive documentary from Chinese director Wang Bing, the movie equivalent of a wall-sized tapestry; it is about the sweatshop capital of China, the northern town of Zhili in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, known as the “city of children’s clothing”. Thousands of workshops turn out mountains of cheap garments and every year vast numbers of young people from about 16 to 22 come from outlying cities to do a season of brutally hard work in return for cash in hand.
This is China’s hop picking or kibbutzim, the young workers often staying in the grim dorms the bosses offer rent free to justify low pay. There are bricks of cash to be seen in this film,...

This year’s Cannes Film Festival features an unusually robust selection of documentaries, two in the Main Competition alone, where nonfiction films almost never appear. And if the ones that have screened in the festival’s first three days have anything in common, it’s scale. These docs go big, go long and go deep.
The two that screened on Wednesday were Steve McQueen’s “Occupied City,” a four-hour tour of 130 different sites in that city, what happened there during World War II and what’s happening now; and Wim Wenders’ “Anselm,” which uses Wenders’ beloved 3D to create the enormous spaces in which German maximalist artist Anselm Kiefer creates his monumentally-scaled work.
Thursday brought another entry in Cannes’ massive-doc sweepstakes. Chinese director Wang Bing, who has two films in this year’s festival, is in the competition with “Youth,” a three-and-a-half hour look not at the carefree young people of his home country,...

San Francisco, May 18 (Ians) The US authorities have filed charges against a former Apple software engineer for alleged theft of autonomous driving technology secrets from the company and fleeing to China.
According to an indictment in a federal court in the Northern District of California, Apple hired Weibao Wang, 35, to work as a software engineer beginning in March 2016.
Wang, a Chinese citizen, was accused of stealing thousands of documents containing the source code for software and hardware related to Apple’s plans for a self-driving car.
The indictment describes how Wang signed a confidentiality agreement with Apple. And the company provided him with in-person secrecy training that covered the appropriate handling of confidential material.
Wang was assigned to work with a team at Apple that designed and developed hardware and software for autonomous systems, which can have a variety of applications, such as self-driving cars.

Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.”
However, despite the nuanced portrayal of the Asian American identity within the phantasmagorical world of Chinese mythology, Ke Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble.
“I remember when I first heard about this character when I was offered the role, it scared the hell out of me. In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&a at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.
Quan plays Freddy Wong, a gawky fictional character from the ‘90s sitcom “Beyond Repair” who embodies several stereotypical Asian tropes.

Stone may have been in the running once to play late actor Lana Turner. According to TCM, Turner was an actor on the rise in the late 30s, having made her small silver screen debut in the feature They Won’t Forget.
From there, Turner’s career experienced even higher heights in the 40s. The 40s saw her starring in notable features like Honky Tonk and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, further growing her celebrity.
Deep in the 40s and 50s, Turner was already an established star and an A-lister in her own right.

What does it mean to be a hero? In a Disney show or movie, it usually means superpowers or suits or several rings — the external vectors for an inner chivalry that was there all along. It’s the kind of heroism that pops up across Marvel, Star Wars, and numerous other Disney features and series, and which fuels Kelvin Yu’s “American Born Chinese,” based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang.
The series opens with a daunting title card detailing the celestial war afoot: The bull demon (Leonard Wu) wants to destabilize the jade emperor, but the monkey king (Daniel Wu) defends the throne with his magical staff staff jingo bang — which has gone missing. The monkey king pursues the thief in the heavenly realm during the first scene, packed with the lush visuals and deft action that Cretton deployed in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Bianca Andreescu is back exactly one month after a horrific injury and she experienced another disappointment at the 2023 Madrid Open.
Some injuries are worse than they look and then others look worse than they are in reality. And although Andreescu's injury which she picked up at the Miami Open shouldn't be taken lightly, the Canadian is surely happy that she returned to competitive action already after one month.
The 2019 US Open champion was forced to miss the Billie Jean King Cup action, but she used the facilities to return to practice and watched her compatriot Leylah Fernandez as she sent Canada into the Finals.
Since Andreescu's career was plagued by injuries also before, she competed in Madrid only once before. That was last year when she defeated Alison Riske and Danielle Collins, before losing to Jessica Pegula in a third consecutive match against an American at last year's Wta 1000 event.
