The hit and miss nature of both early 2000s horror and the premise are quite obvious in today’s selection. While the original Willard and its sequel Ben are known entities, it’s not like they are the heaviest of hitters in terms of horror property. In fact, Willard is Exactly the type of property that I will always argue needs a remake. Well, needs is a strong word, but it lends itself better to a remake than something as perfect as the first Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Willard is a solid movie but underseen by today’s audience and would have maybe been more attractive to the audiences of 21 years ago who maybe grew up with the original. Sadly, that didn’t happen as it was arguably one of 2003’s biggest flops and that’s a huge bummer because not only is the movie fun with great, mostly practical effects,...

Francis Ford Coppola has fought many battles in his filmmaking career, but none is probably as intense as his production of the Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now. Based on Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness, the filmmaker reportedly faced a chaotic shoot that involved lead actor Martin Sheen having a heart attack and built sets being destroyed.
Many behind-the-scenes stories have been shared about the movie in the past and it was also the subject of a documentary Hearts of Darkness – A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse. One interesting but sad trivia about the film was the butchering of a water buffalo at the climax of the film. The buffalo was reportedly slaughtered for real and was part of the local tribes’ custom, though Coppola refused to slay an animal for a movie.

Marlon Brando is among the pantheon of the greatest actors to have ever graced the silver screen. He popularized the art of method acting and maintaining the intensity of his characters throughout production. His award-winning and acclaimed performances in A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, and The Godfather continued to be analyzed and admired by current actors.
Marlon Brando as Colonel Walter Kurtz in Apocalypse Now
One of his most recognizable antagonistic performances was in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Brando has had an infamous reputation for being difficult to work with. During the film, Brando and his co-star Dennis Hopper had a misunderstanding, where Brando threw a tantrum, resulting in a feud that almost turned physical.

With six decades of acting under his belt, Harrison Ford has made works that have run the gamut of critical responses. On Rotten Tomatoes, his most critically acclaimed role is listed as the "Apocalypse Now" making-of documentary "Hearts of Darkness," a film in which he ironically doesn't actually speak or appear but which nonetheless earned universal acclaim from the review-tabulating site. His lowest-rated film? An already-forgotten 2013 thriller called "Paranoia," which just 7% of critics included on the aggregation site wrote positively about.
Many of Ford's most entertaining films lie somewhere in the middle of that wide range; they're crowd-pleasing blockbusters and cult favorites with some endearing -- and in the best cases, now legendary -- imperfections. Ask fans what their favorite Ford-starring films are and you'll get a smorgasbord of answers that fit in this category, from "Star Wars" to "Indiana Jones" to "Blade Runner" to "The Fugitive." Kevin Bacon, dancing away, in 4K? Footloose is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, it’s been confirmed.
Paramount Pictures is wasting little time sorting new catalogue releases for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in 2024, with the news that the 1980s hit Footloose is heading to the format.
Already confirmed in America, a UK release has now been earmarked for February 12th 2024, and the film has gone up for order now. You can find it here.
Initially, it’s only available as a Steelbook release, although it’s expected that a regular 4K disc package isn’t far away. It’s the original film, incidentally, that’s getting the release, and not the remake.
Update: The regular, cheaper release is now confirmed for 13th May 2024. You can find it here.
Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow thus take the lead roles here, with Herbert Ross behind the camera.

Four journalists head into the heart of a United States tearing itself apart in Civil War. Alex Garland’s best film yet? Quite possibly. Our review:
It’s a wonder what people who live in war-torn countries might think of Civil War, the latest film from writer-director Alex Garland. Would they give a ‘welcome to my world’ shrug? Would they perhaps feel a frisson of schadenfreude at the sight of a too-big-to fail democracy tearing itself apart?
Whatever their reaction might be, it’s the realism with which Garland plunges North America into a bitter internal conflict that gives Civil War such an electrical charge. We in the West have become used to images of brutality in far-off lands; when those images are set against all-American chain stores – a crashed military chopper outside a Jc Penney, tanks rolling through city streets – the results are indelibly disturbing.

Surely the making of one of the funniest movies ever made can’t be that serious…and it really isn’t! Ok, 1980’s Airplane! was a tough sell and there were minor clashes between the directors and Paramount and lawsuits from a rival studio threatened the casting of numerous stars. But there was also perfect against-type casting, clever workarounds to silly DGA regulations and a complete reinvention of the spoof movie, all of which made Airplane! one of the greatest comedies ever.. Oh, and there were fart machines, too!
And so let’s park the taxi, avoid the fish and check in on our drinking problem as we find out: Wtf Happened to this movie?!
Airplane! has its origins in the Kentucky Fried Theater, which the trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker (collectively known as Zaz) founded in 1971. One act the fellas grew fond of was dubbing...

Former HBO and Max PR exec Chris Willard is launching his own company, Chris Willard Communications.
The San Francisco-based strategic communications consulting firm is described as “servicing clients at the intersection of culture and technology.” At launch, Chris Willard Communications will offer hourly consulting, narrative development, launch campaigns, media training and crisis communications services.
Additional details are available at the firm’s website here.
Willard, who relocated to San Fransisco after exiting the Warner Bros. Discovery brands last August to pursue other ventures, will begin taking meetings Feb. 12 and anticipates building up to a full client load by late spring.
During his time at HBO, Willard led PR strategies across the business, including the 2023 launch of the rebranded Max (a combo of HBO Max and Discovery+) streamer following Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia in April 2022. Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba is still making sense of something he saw one day on the way to the recording studio: A man on the side of the road battling his mental health, violently screaming at the world. “He was throwing his arms and legs about,” the singer and guitarist tells Rolling Stone. “It was a display of rage in front of this bush, but it looked like he was dancing.”
He noticed other passersby gawking at the man with amusement, but Skiba felt compassion — and curiosity. “I was just thinking,...

While recently scrolling Twitter, an interesting anecdote came to my attention. In the fabled George Lucas outline for a Star Wars sequel trilogy, a treatment which the filmmaker shared with the Walt Disney Company when he sold Lucasfilm for $4 billion, Lucas apparently had a strange vision for Luke Skywalker: He wanted the older version of Skywalker to be like a character in a movie Lucas almost made before Star Wars. He wanted him to be, in essence, Marlon Brando’s Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now, right down to the bald head and rambling gibberish.
This detail is not new. In fact, Pablo Hidalgo first confirmed the information in Star Wars: Fascinating Facts (2020). In that book (via Total Film/GamesRadar+), Hidalgo wrote, “Although Luke Skywalker only barely appears in The Force Awakens, the concept artists had a lot to imagine based on the fragments of the story they were hearing as it developed.

Francis Ford Coppola's bleak Vietnam War picture "Apocalypse Now" is not only one of the best films of 1979, but is handily one of the finest, most important films of its decade. Using Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella "Heart of Darkness" as a template, Copolla transposed the book's action from the late 1800s Congo to the jungles of Cambodia, and, in so doing, exposed the madness and horror of the Vietnam War in harrowing, soul-hollowing terms. As Captain Willars (Martin Sheen) treks deeper and deeper into the chaos of the natural world -- drifting ever closer to the insane, cult-founding rogue Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) -- reality begins to dissipate. Eventually, madness and violence are all that remain, and war is reduced to its base function: brazen, meaningless destruction and cruelty. "Apocalypse Now" is a great, great film.
Curiously, a lot of war enthusiasts love "Apocalypse Now," seemingly ignoring the film's...

Melissa Joan Hart is a grandma! Well, sort of. In a perhaps telling sign of the industry’s idea of roles women of a certain age should be playing, the actress recently portrayed a grandmother in the Lifetime movie Would You Kill for Me: The Mary Bailey Story. Explain that!
Considering Melissa Joan Hart will forever be a teenage witch to many of us, it is a bit jarring to find her being cast in the role. But it’s not just that our memories can’t mathematically fathom Hart, now 47(!), playing a grandmother, it’s that it feels like further proof that the movie and TV business has no idea what to do with women after they’re “over the hill.” Admittedly, The Mary Bailey Story is based on a true story and the figures are indeed young, but it still feels like it plays into the topic as a whole.

Luc Besson’s Dogman is a superhero movie in search of a comic book, which makes a refreshing change amid the summer’s raft of DC disappointments. It skews a little close to Todd Phillips’ Golden Lion winner Joker in terms of weirdness and (especially) wardrobe, but it also offers the perfect showcase for star Caleb Landry Jones, who imbues a boisterously insane action thriller with heart and soul in what must surely be a career-high performance. Which is no mean feat for an actor whose work has always been excellent and has so often gone under the radar.
There is nothing remotely under-the-radar about Dogman, which fuses movies as diverse as Flawless and Willard with Besson’s trademark, anything-goes approach to genre. Besson’s films don’t always work — for every Léon there is a Lucy — but somehow it pulls together here as, pun intended, a shaggy-dog story spin by its hero.

Layoffs are underway at HBO’s public relations department, TheWrap has learned.
The Warner Bros. Frank Field, a longtime meteorologist and health reporter at NBC’s New York station Wnbc-tv, has died. He was 100.
Field died Saturday in Florida, according to Wnbc, where he spent 25 years of his career.
Field attended Brown University and MIT, where he learned meteorology, and later served as an Army Air Force meteorology officer in the European theater during World War II.
Additionally, he earned a degree in geology at Brooklyn College, a bachelor’s degree in optometry at Columbia University and a doctorate on the faculty of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Field began his meteorology career at Wnbc in 1958. There, he gained national attention when, according to Wnbc, “Johnny Carson decided needling ‘NBC’s crack meteorologist’ would be good fun and he became a regular guest on The Tonight Show. Field matched wits with the popular comedian, somehow managing to maintain his dignity and air of authority.”

Will Smith once shared some strong opinions about the rap community that some artists like Eminem took slight issue with. It turns out Dr. Dre may have also had a problem with Smith’s comments as well.
So when the opportunity presented itself for Dre to poke some fun at the blockbuster superstar, Dre apparently couldn’t resist.

Before he was one of the world’s biggest superstars, Smith was first introduced to mainstream audiences as rapper Fresh Prince. Him and his partner in rap DJ Jazzy Jeff would produce several hit records that cemented their legacy in the genre. But most of Smith’s music intentionally veered towards lighthearted content that helped separate him from other hip hop acts.

The Foo Fighters are scheduled to embark on a summer tour of the U.S. and Canada. This will be the first set of performances since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron and Angels & Airwaves’ Atom Willard are set to fill in for Hawkins. Another source said that the band has been working with several drummers over the past months. When they narrowed the selection down to Cameron and Willard, they began rehearsals at Studio 606.

Hawkins died last March from cardiac arrest in his hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia, just hours before he was set to perform. Although no cause of death was officially released, a urine toxicology report showed that he had benzodiazepines, opioids, antidepressants and Thc in his body. According to an autopsy, the drummer also had an enlarged heart, which may have contributed to his death.

The producers of 2003’s Willard chose to nix “remake” from the film’s marketing vocabulary, but 2003’s Willard adaptation is irrefutably a remake of 1971’s furry social outcast chiller. At the forefront of 2000s remake trends, Glen Morgan‘s Willard features altered themes and a deeper thirst for suspense, going the “darker and grittier” route displayed by subsequent studio remakes (including Morgan’s 2006 Black Christmas slasher). Stephen Gilbert’s novel Ratman’s Notebooks inspires both pictures, although neither dare touch the subplot about “Ratman Robberies” — the narrator steals money from shopkeepers and neighbors before the whole workplace murder climax. Where’s my movie about a criminal aided by rat accomplices? Rat King in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will do, I guess.
It’s daffy to think that 2003’s Willard was hidden as a remake when you watch them back-to-back, but the general moviegoer wouldn’t know any different. That’s...

What makes a story a “classic?” It’s a vague yet glorious distinction applied to books, films, art, and even models of vintage cars whose value is passed down from one generation to the next. But is it just the length of time a text or work survives that qualifies it as a “classic” or is there something more?
Generally speaking, the classics that tend to be celebrated one generation after another, and especially those that are passed down from one century to another, are works that speak of something timeless. The times we live in will change, culture will change, and even our values change. But the experience of living, of loving, of losing (to name just a few such topics)? Those will remain as universal as the human experience is long.
Hence adapting a classic work for a modern audience, whether on film, television, or TikTok, is admirable.

“Francis feels very frustrated,” wrote Eleanor Coppola in Notes: The Making of Apocalypse Now. “He gathers up his Oscars and throws them out the window. The children pick up the pieces in the back yard. Four of the five are broken.” The shoot for Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam epic had yet to even begin—the director was still trying to cast the key roles of Willard and Kurtz. Steve McQueen, Al Pacino, Jimmy Caan, Robert Redford and even Marlon Brando had all turned him down. Their reasons bounced between keeping kids in school, fears about getting sick in the Philippines and, of course, money. This is just the start of a book crafted from Eleanor Coppola’s three-year diaries kept during production on Apocalypse Now.
The entire Coppola family had moved to the Philippines—Francis, Eleanor and their three children, Gian-Carlo, Roman and Sofia—and Eleanor had been additionally...
