After a decades-long wait, it was 2006’s The Departed that earned Martin Scorsese his first Oscar win for Best Director, presented by the iconic trio of Coppola, Spielberg, and Lucas. Apart from Scorsese’s deserved victory, the thriller, based on the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, further swooped four accolades in the 79th Academy Award, including Best Picture.
But while Scorsese intended it to be a one-off thing, Mark Wahlberg, who starred as Sergeant Dignam, had ideas about continuing the story with a sequel, starring Brad Pitt and Robert De Niro.

Watching the extended director’s cut DVD of Kingdom of Heaven nearly 18 years after its release (and nearly 20 in the case of the film’s original theatrical run) is a curious thing. Among Ridley Scott’s many insights into what may still be his most beautiful looking historical epic to date, the director muses on the commentary track that the home media market is something of a godsend. Because even two decades ago, the modus operandi was “faster and simpler.”
“I think the value of this digital market is people are more willing or more ready to sit at home and enjoy the longer version,” Scott reflected. “Thank God for DVD.”
That long lost home market of yore really was a gift to filmmakers, and few of them benefited from it better than Scott. The British director famously achieved a kind of absolution when he was able to re-edit Blade Runner...

Act accordingly, Martin Scorsese has some things to say about “The Departed.”
In a new interview with GQ, Scorsese said Warner Bros. executives were disappointed in his gloriously nihilistic film because it ends with almost all of the main characters dead – including the leads played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon.
“What they wanted was a franchise. It wasn’t about a moral issue of a person living or dying,” Scorsese claimed of his Warner Bros. bosses.
Released in 2006, “The Departed” famously won Scorsese his first and only Oscar so far for Best Director. The film was also the 2007 Best Picture winner and won another Oscar for its adapted screenplay by William Monahan. The project was an American remake of “Infernal Affairs,” the 2002 Japanese film that spawned its own franchise – in part, because one of the two main characters survived its finale.

If you grew up on the East Coast, you may have heard of (or even visited) Spooky World. Started in Berlin, Massachusetts in 1991, it was properly the first of its kind. A large-scale haunted attraction that opened its doors every October to horror fans and lovers of Halloween. I grew up in the Midwest so Quinn Monahan's new documentary Spooktacular! is my first introduction to the park itself, though I certainly grew up experiencing the reach of its impact.
In 1991, David Bertolino started a Halloween themed hay ride event. Customers would board and would be taken around the property of a farm in rural Massachusetts, and along the way, they would pass by a variety of spooky scenes and actors portraying monsters, zombies and spookies galore.. Standard stuff now, but at the time, it was a brand new idea; one that was an immediate success. Word spread rapidly. Guests...

PGA officials were in the hot seat on Tuesday as they faced lawmakers questions about the tour’s abrupt reversal that led to a deal with Saudi-backed rival Liv, despite months of criticism over the human rights record of the Saudi gpvernment.
At a hearing of the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee On Investigations, PGA COO Ron Price, pressed to provide an estimate of just how much the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund would contribute to a new entity, said that “north of $1 billion” was being discussed, but that negotiations on a final agreement were ongoing.
Price and Jimmy Dunne, board member of the PGA Tour, said that the new entity would still be controlled by the PGA. They each stressed to lawmakers that the PGA decided to enter into the agreement rather than face years of litigation and a division among its athletes, as well as the threat posed by the rival Liv league,...

The U.S. Department of Justice will review a proposed deal between the PGA tour and the Saudi Arabian owners of Liv Golf to determine whether it violates federal antitrust laws.
In a public statement, the PGA Tour said, “We are confident that once all stakeholders learn more about how the PGA Tour will lead this new venture, they will understand how it benefits our players, fans and sport while protecting the American institution of golf.”
The PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, or Public Investment Fund (Pif), negotiated secretly for two months about a merger. The deal would allow the PGA Tour, European tour and Pif to combine commercial business into an autonomous, for-profit entity. None of the players were made aware of the agreement prior to its announcement.

A Senate committee has launched an investigation into the agreement between the PGA and the Saudi-backed Liv Golf League, announced last week despite legal and public acrimony between the two organizations.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-ct), the chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said that the investigation “is key to understanding the potential risks posed by the Saudi government assuming control of this cherished American institution.”
In a letter to PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan, Blumenthal wrote that the U.S. golf league’s “sudden and drastic reversal of position concerning Liv Golf raise serious questions regarding the reasons for and terms behind the announced agreement.”
Blumenthal is requesting documents and other information related to the agreement. He cited concerns that the Saudi investments are a form of sportswashing, or softening its image despite a “deeply disturbing human rights record at home and abroad.”

Ending two years of rancor and legal warfare, the PGA Tour has agreed to merge with Saudi-backed Liv Golf.
In a joint statement, the two organizations declared the stunning turn of events “a landmark agreement to unify the game of golf, on a global basis.” Technically, the pact that was announced is a framework for a deal, with a finalized version expected in the coming weeks.
The new spirit of comity represents a significant departure from the barbed exchanges between the parties in dueling antitrust lawsuits as well as players and fans on opposite sides of the split. The upstart Liv maintained that the well-entrenched PGA had engaged in anticompetitive practices by punishing its players, while PGA objected to Liv coming into its turf and poaching talent with hefty payouts.

Screen Media has picked up North American rights to Anchorage, a drug-fueled road trip thriller from first-time director Scott Monahan. The Mise En Scéne Company, which is handling worldwide sales on the film, also signed a deal with Bulldog for U.K. rights.
Anchorage premiered at the Oldenburg International Film Festival, where it won the German independence award for best film, as well as the best actor nod for co-star Dakota Loesch, who also wrote the screenplay.
In the film, Loesch and Monahan play brothers Jacob and John who attempt to drive a trunk full of stolen opioids from Florida to Alaska to cash in big. But a split-second act of violence in the California desert derails their plans and sets them on a crash course with tragedy. Since its Oldenburg premiere, the film has traveled the festival circuit, building up word-of-mouth and winning numerous awards.

In contrast, Elliot Gould played a hip, spaced-out...

Actor Liam Neeson is set to portray the iconic character Philip Marlowe in the upcoming film, Marlowe. But he is hardly the first. Neeson has become known in recent decades for his leading roles in action movies like The Grey and Taken.
In Marlowe, he’ll go noir as he attempts to fill the shoes of one of the most storied private eyes in history: a character who’s been played by some of the biggest actors in Hollywood history.

Set in Bay Cities, California, in the ’50s, Marlowe follows a “tough as nails private detective” as he investigates the disappearance of a beautiful heiress’ ex-lover. But the more he digs into the case, the more he realizes the spider’s web has spun far larger than he originally thought.

In late 2018, when Howard Stern asked Jonah Hill about working with Martin Scorsese on "The Wolf of Wall Street," Hill was effusive in his praise of the veteran filmmaker. There's no doubt that Scorsese is one of, if not the greatest living director. According to Hill, a lot of that has to do with his ability to problem-solve. As the actor sees it, "directing is just solving issues constantly," and he claimed to have witnessed first-hand Scorsese's ability to "close his eyes and then solve an insanely complex issue" in 30 seconds.
By the time it came time to film 2006's "The Departed," Scorsese had been around long enough -- his filmography stretches all the way back to the '70s -- to know what he wanted and how to make it happen. And as some unprecedented behind-the-scenes footage shows, the director approached his Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon-led crime...

Spoilers for "The Departed" follow, so beware.
Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" features a star-studded cast and an action-packed story, so it's no surprise that there was some talk of a sequel. Mark Wahlberg gave an Oscar-nominated performance as Sergeant Dignam, a significant supporting role. The actor spearheaded a follow-up to "The Departed" along with the film's screenwriter, William Monahan. Sadly, the idea was turned down, and Monahan has a pretty good idea why.
The stacked bill of the original "Departed" included Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, all of whom were killed off by the end of the film. Wahlberg was the only actor with a surviving character, and he wanted to bring in a new crop of Hollywood legends for a follow-up. "Like [Robert] De Niro and Brad Pitt, and you know, that sort of thing," the actor explained to KFC Radio.

Forty-four years have passed since a feature film was last built around Raymond Chander’s harder-than-hardboiled fictional detective Philip Marlowe — a screen absence that seems both unduly long and now, in the wake of Neil Jordan’s “Marlowe,” not quite long enough. A phony, flimsy attempt at vintage noir, the film is adapted not from a Chandler work but “The Black-Eyed Blonde,” an authorized Marlowe entry from 2014, by Irish novelist John Banville. Minus Banville’s own knack for literary ventriloquism, however, this all too evidently European co-production can’t help but feel multiple degrees removed from the real thing, not helped by the shuffling, ungainly presence of a wildly miscast Liam Neeson in shoes once filled by Bogart and Mitchum.
Following a low-key premiere as the closing film at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, “Marlowe” will be released Stateside by Open Road Films on December 2 — though even with the big-name cachet of Jordan,...

Berlin, Aug 24 (Ians) Top players have made an “unprecedented commitment” to the PGA Tour by agreeing to further enhancements to the schedule.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on Wednesday detailed four key items that will be introduced to bring the game’s leading players together more often.
The latest enhancements were announced a week after Tiger Woods met fellow PGA Tour players amid the ongoing threat posed by Liv Golf, reports Dpa.
There will be additional elevated events for 2023, a commitment from top players to compete in at least 20 PGA Tour events per year, an expansion to the player impact program and guaranteed league-minimum earnings for full Tour members.
The addition of four elevated events – which will have purses of at least 20 million – brings the total to 12 for next season and the top players have agreed to tee off in all of them.
Changes to the player impact program will see 20 rather than 10 golfers rewarded,...
