"Deadpool and Wolverine" — which is due out on July 26, 2024 — will mark Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine after a seven year hiatus. (I remember vividly when 2017's "Logan" was supposed to be his final bow.)
Ever since superhero movies have become Marvel and DC's biggest cultural footprints, the comics have had the mandate to follow their lead. The adaptations point the direction of the source material, not the other way around.
Take how, in the 2010s, Marvel relegated the X-Men from the top shelf to the dustbin because 20th Century Fox owned the mutants' movie rights. Once Marvel's parent company Disney acquired Fox (and the X-Men with it) in 2019, the X-Men were raised back up. "Deadpool and Wolverine" is the greatest culmination of that merger yet, with the film's trailers suggesting the Merc with a Mouth is entering the MCU full-throttle — and bringing the rest of Fox's Marvel films along with him.

As you may have heard, the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con International was not the usual Sdcc experience.
On July 14, the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA joined their writing counterparts in the WGA by going on strike and picketing the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for its refusal to grant them a fair deal. Since the details of the strike preclude actors and writers from promoting their union-backed films and TV shows, many of the planned panels, promotions, and guests at Comic-Con had to bow out.
The end result was a Con that very much resembled the event’s earlier days before it became a action item on the calendar for big studios like Marvel, DC, and others to showcase their upcoming blockbusters. And you know what? It was all still pretty cool!

A lot of the major studios have decided not to have presentations at the San Diego Comic Con this year. Disney, Marvel Studios, DC Studios, Netflix, Sony, Universal, they’re all sitting this one out. Murderworld: Wolverine #1 Writers: Jim Zub & Ray Fawkes | Artist: Carlos Nieto | Inker: Victor Nava | Colourist: Matt Milla | Letters: Cory Petit
I hardly ever regret buying a comic, but this was one of those times. I think what made it feel worse was the fact I missed the original release date, and then had my Lcs backorder me a copy. How Marvel can market this firstly as an #1 and secondly as a Wolverine comic is beyond me. It represents everything that is wrong with mainstream comics right now. The Wolverine solo series has been pretty much faultless since its return, so obviously with this Murderworld series, it’s a classic case of using popular characters to push another series. And I fell for it hook, line and sinker. The cover drew me in straight away with its variations of Wolverine through the years. Yes, I am an easy mark! But that is...

This article contains potential spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
For a movie that comes out in just a few months, we still don’t know that much about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. True, Marvel did release a trailer considered by many (including the Marvel Standom team) to be the best in the genre. But that teaser only included a few quick glimpses at returning characters such as Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Okoye (Danai Gurira), and new additions Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) and Namor the Sub-Mariner (Tenoch Huerta). In fact, the most detailed information about the movie’s heroes has come from merchandising leaks.
That trend continues with new images from three new action figures. Images shared by Twitter user @computron show a set sold at Target that includes Shuri, Namor, and Williams in her Ironheart armor. Unlike the Lego set that featured Shuri in a Black Panther-style costume, she wears a purple jumpsuit here.

Marvel Studios’ villains are getting a jolt, with the super villain team the Thunderbolts getting their own film.
Filmmaker Jake Schreier, who has directed films such as Robot & Frank and episodes of TV series such as Jim Carrey’s Kidding, Dave and Minx, has landed the job to direct Thunderbolts, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Marvel veteran Eric Pearson is penning the script, after working with the studio on Black Widow and Thor: Ragnarok. Deadline first reported the news.
In the comics, the Thunderbolts are a team of supervillains who debuted in The Incredible Hulk No. 449, and created by artist Mark Bagley and writer Kurt Busiek. They are akin to DC’s Suicide Squad as that in some versions the team works under government supervision.

Star Wars continuity is a little more complex than other fictional universes. Whereas properties like Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings cover centuries, the gap between The Phantom Menace and The Rise of Skywalker is just 67 years. Within that time, both the Empire and the First Order rise and fall, there are two massive galaxy-spanning conflicts and practically every piece of canon Star Wars media takes place.
Lucasfilm famously has a dedicated story group devoted to untangling all this, but some things still slip through the cracks. One common problem is that characters who appear in both the original and prequel trilogies don’t acknowledge that they’ve previously met C-3Po and R2-D2. Now, the actual reason is because George Lucas hadn’t planned out the exact details of the prequels in the early 1980s, but that obviously doesn’t apply in-universe.

In my recent review of Empyre #1 I made the point that Marvel of late didn’t have the greatest track record when it came to these big crossover events. Empyre #1, though, was a pleasant surprise, and I am certainly looking forward to reading the rest of the main limited series. That, of course, is not even half the story, not by a long shot. I think at last count there were over 50 books that tied into Empyre, and this is the area where sometimes the quality can really nose dive. Sometimes the pressure to fit a book in results in a really weak issue that just annoys people. Yes, you get the five bucks for that book, but you lose the 50 bucks you would have gained from a reader if the quality remained high. So, I’m doing...

This year, developers Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal will bring Earth Mightiest Heroes to video games with Marvel’s Avengers. The action-adventure game will allow players to control Marvel’s elite superhero team in a single-player campaign as well as online multiplayer team-ups.
While we wait for Marvel’s Avengers to launch in September, Marvel has put out an official collection of comic book prequels, which give us our best look at this new video game universe. The collection is called Marvel’s Avengers: Road to A-Day and it features one comic each for Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and Black Widow.
Marvel’s Avengers: Road to A-Day is available digitally now for fans who want to know more about the events that lead to the game. The comics were penned by Paul Allor, Christos N. Gage, and Jim Zub with artwork from Michele Bandini, Paco Diaz, Robert Gill,...

When a bold new book such as Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda is launched, publishers often look for that extra incentive to entice readers into picking up copies. Sure, there’s the immediate appeal of the headliner who’s already proven to to be a billion dollar draw at the box office, but it certainly helps to up the ante when they’re hoping we’ll add yet another title to our pull lists. In this case, Marvel’s solution was simple: bring back the Sentry.
For those unfamiliar, the Sentry is often argued as being the most powerful character making up the House of Ideas’ pantheon (the Silver Surfer may have something to say about that), and draws frequent comparisons to Superman. But whereas the Man of Steel’s greatest nemesis is Lex Luthor, Robert Reynolds’ comes from within: the Void, a warped reflection of himself.

Fans of Alpha Flight have been pretty hard done by in recent years. Although the John Byrne written and drawn first 28 issues remain fan favourites to this day later efforts have seen somewhat diminishing returns, with the occasional bright spot. Alpha Flight characters and history became a mess, so convoluted every new attempt required rebooting and retconning, creating more mess. I think the final nail in the coffin for ‘Canada’s super team’ was when they became nothing more than second banana space warriors backing up Captain Marvel. So, what’s a publisher to do? How about give us some stories from the classic era, with all the creators being Canadian themselves. Yep, that works.
So, we get three stories from the classic era and featuring the characters we loved then and now.

Thanks to Phil at Nerdly I had the opportunity to review two new Dungeons and Dragons books, published by Wizards of the Coast and Ten Speed Press/Random House. A word of warning to hard-core D&d fans, these probably aren’t your cup of tea, but they do serve an important purpose.
The two books are Warriors & Weapons and Monsters & Creatures; small hardback, immersive guides to the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Both are packed full of new illustrations from Conceptopolis, about 70+ per book, and have great production values – metallic ink on the front cover, nice iconography, plus metallic end papers. These are books for children, but would look right at home in any D&d collection.
