Godzilla has always been super cool, but what about a Godzilla that's actually a mechsuit? Well, Mechagodzilla was originally intended as an antithesis for the king of monsters, representing attempts to squash a force of nature that wreaks havoc or acts as a benevolent mediator, depending on who you ask. The Gundam version of Godzilla first appeared in 1974's "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla," where a bunch of aliens from Black Hole Planet 3 built a massive robot monster to destroy Godzilla and take over the planet. After thwarted attempts to take down the Og prehistoric beast, humans took matters into their own hands to craft a high-endurance, super-powerful cyborg in 2002's "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla," who teamed up with other beasts like Mothra to put Godzilla down (and failed).

For a full decade now, Warner Bros. and Legendary have been bringing Godzilla and many other classic monsters to the big screen via the MonsterVerse. Beginning with 2014's "Godzilla," this universe has brought Toho's beloved creations — as well as some brand new beasts — to audiences around the world. In stark contrast to 1998's "Godzilla," these Hollywood-produced takes on the long-running franchise have worked like gangbusters as blockbuster crowdpleasers. Five movies (and a TV show) later, the MonsterVerse is showing no signs of slowing down.
While other cinematic universes have come and gone over the years, largely because they bit off more than they could chew, the MonsterVerse has succeeded by being patient and letting audiences be hungry for more. Most recently, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" proved that moviegoers were happy to show up for a big, ridiculous ride just months after the very serious, Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One" left theaters.

With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ruling the world, thanks to a huge $194 million box office weekend, the MonsterVerse has never been so mighty. As speculation for a third Godzilla-versus-Kong movie is underway, it is time to talk about the best parts of the kaiju-centered universe: the monster battles.
While Kong had a share of bare-knuckle brawls, Godzilla faced numerous foes, with most of them nearly outmatching the fearsome lizard. It only begs the question: if they can beat Godzilla, can they also beat Kong? Here are five of Godzilla’s enemies that can defeat Kong in a battle:
1. King Ghidorah

The concept of monsters battling each other has been a central theme since the inception of the Godzilla franchise with the release of the very first Godzilla film in the 1950s. This idea of colossal creatures engaged in epic battles to the death continues to be popular, almost 70 years after its birth. The latest film bearing the Godzilla name is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and it featured a very unique take on Godzilla – the kaiju was pink. Not only that, but some fans have deducted the nationality of every major titan in the film.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is full of surprises. But there’s one very big cameo that has been withheld from marketing materials so far that really needs to be discussed.
But in order to do that, we’ve got to talk about the ending of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” If you haven’t seen the movie – or if you don’t want to be totally ruined when you do – turn back now.
Consider this your last spoiler warning.
Still there? Ok, let’s get into it.

The MonsterVerse franchise is an underrated contender in the cinematic universe wars, with a clear watching order that avoids confusion or an overwhelming number of entries. Part of the success of the franchise is that the continuity and canon are not overly complicated — well, it is a franchise about giant monsters punching each other in the face, after all.
After doing what all big cinematic universes do and expanding to TV — albeit with a really good show in this case, the MonsterVerse is back on the big screen with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The movie is set to not only bring the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World together once again but also bring a bit of a buddy-cop vibe to the MonsterVerse.

Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" isn't so much a feature film as it is a Joycean stream-of-consciousness ramble escaped from the mind of a sugared-up eight-year-old, his tongue stained with the remnants of Blue Raspberry Warheads, slamming action figures together, roaring to himself in destructive ecstasy. Whereas Wingard's previous Godzilla film -- 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" -- brilliantly embraced the inherent silliness of the monsters' late-'60s Toho entries, "New Empire" tilts full-bore into the realm of Saturday morning cartoons, presenting a brazenly toyetic and visually wild romp that will crack even the hardest of hearts. "Godzilla x Kong" may make a viewer measurably dumber, but golly, that viewer will be entertained.
"Godzilla x Kong" moves so fast as to make one dizzy, and the visuals are so busy that a large caffeinated beverage may be required to keep up. The film climaxes with multiple monsters,...

As one of the main selling points of their films, Toho Studios has spent a vast majority of their time crafting monsters of various quantity and quality to be involved in their films whether it be in their main Godzilla series or their other features. While Godzilla has remained their big money-maker and longest-lasting series, that there have been other attempts at creating these kinds of movies that have meant the need for crafting either allies or opponents for these films over the years. Some are better than others, but when they hit a great idea for a creature or concept it should make sense to reuse the particular creature over and over again, such as with popular beasts like Anguirus, Rodan, King Ghidora, and Mothra, to name just a few. That makes it even weirder how some of the creatures were never given another shot as they provided a...

This post contains spoilers for "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" season 1.
"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" wrapped up its first season this week with a surprisingly satisfying finale that wove together disparate threads the show has been untangling all season. The sci-fi series' overlong debut season still managed to keep plenty of viewers intrigued with a myriad of monsters, an endless stream of mysteries, and two Russells for the price of one, but its final two episodes are the best "Monarch" has been yet.
There's no bloat in the season's big payoff episode, which sees Lee Shaw and his team of assorted and sundry amateur sleuths enter the Titan realm (Aka the Hollow Earth) after an attempt to seal it off went wrong. Along the way, they finally figure out what happened to Shaw's friend and colleague Kei (Mari Yamamoto) all those years ago. Part emotional reunion, part thrilling, monster-filled adventure, the...

For a Godzilla franchise that has basically established itself as a modernized, Americanized version of Toho Studio’s iconic Kaiju movies, Legendary’s Monsterverse is surprisingly inventive when it comes to the creation of gigantic monstrosities. Aside from the four primary iconic monsters of Godzilla lore, namely Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla, a major chunk of Monsterverse creatures are original additions. In addition to enriching the established Godzilla mythos, the monsters of Legendary’s shared universe, known as ‘Titans’, stand out on their own thanks to their cool, creative designs, which are a perfect amalgamation of natural world inspirations and inventive visual traits.
Legendary’s latest small-screen venture, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, has swung surprisingly hard, both narrative-wise and using a substantial budget to offer a monster spectacle of cinematic quality. “King of the Monsters—Savior of Our City?” This is what a news channel chyron at the end of 2014’s Godzilla asks. The question appears on a television set in a San Francisco stadium that has been converted into a Fema camp for survivors of Godzilla’s attack on the Bay Area, which climaxed with a battle between the Big G and two Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs). The scale of suffering caused by these creatures, and the shrieks of terror the survivors let out when they see Godzilla rise after defeating the MUTOs and walk to the sea, tell us that the answer is “no.”
To anyone wondering who, then, is the savior of the city, the same scene provides an answer. In a sequence that mirrors countless feel-good videos shared on social media, we follow protagonist Lt. Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in his tattered fatigues as he carries...

"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" just dropped on Apple TV+, and while the show still seems to be finding its footing in its first two episodes, the premiere has already assuaged some of fans' basic fears about how the show would work. Sure, this is a kaiju series and a continuation of the story that started with Legendary's MonsterVerse a decade ago, but it's also a 10-hour-long season on a streamer known more for its brainy literary adaptations than all things monstrous. Plus, the title is "Legacy of Monsters" and the show's first trailer sets it up to be more of a cross-generational mystery than an action series. In short, we worried ahead of release that "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" might be a bit short on the actual monsters. Nope!

This article contains spoilers for Legendary’s “MonsterVerse” films.
Apple+‘s newest blockbuster series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, has now arrived to flesh out the larger than life “MonsterVerse.” Legacy Pictures has been building this shared universe filled with infamous kaiju ever since the reboot of Godzilla in 2014, and since, has given us all the classic monsters including Ghidora, Mothra, Rodan and of course, Kong.
Legacy of Monsters helps fill the little gaps in the periphery of the story, fleshing out the humans who choose to find, study, and often protect these massive creatures. At the center of it all has always been the imposing consortium known as “Monarch.” With all the giant-sized kaiju-chaos that can often be the most memorable moments of these monster movies, it’s understandable if Monarch shrinks in the presence of the true stars of the show. Legendary’s MonsterVerse Godzilla TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set to premiere on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, November 17, followed by one episode every Friday through January 12. (You can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here.) In anticipation of the show’s premiere, we’re taking a look back at several of Godzilla’s previous adventures to see how they stack up against each other. For the sake of keeping it as lean as possible, we’re focusing on his earliest days, going all the way back to the original Showa era, consisting of his very first outing in 1954, his first clashes with the likes of Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah and his cyborg counterpart, Mechagodzilla, before concluding its run in 1975. To add more familiarity to the pot, we’re also including his string of American blockbusters, from...

Japan’s most iconic giant monster is set for a big screen return in Takashi Yamazaki’s upcoming film “Godzilla Minus One.” Until that day, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the long-lasting legacy of “Godzilla.” Originally conceived as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear warfare, the kaiju has seen its fair share of unique variations. Yet, the beauty of why this character remains solidified in cinema history is for the ideas that come with its creation and existence, along with many unique interpretations. Like many movie series, the franchise’s quality frequently fluctuates, yet plenty of these movies are good, some even fantastic. Between October 6, 1997 and September 30, 1998, 256 episodes of Godzilla Island, a TV series spin-off from the Godzilla film franchise, aired on TV Tokyo in Japan. Twenty-five years later, Godzilla Island is finally getting an official international release, complete with English subtitles… and it’s being released through YouTube! An episode of Godzilla Island will be released on the Godzilla Official by Toho YouTube channel every Tuesday and Thursday.
If you’re a Godzilla fan who hasn’t heard much, if anything, about Godzilla Island, it’s understandable. Each episode of the show is only 3 minutes long, and the kaiju featured on the show weren’t brought to life through “suitmation” like in the Toho movies. Instead, the monsters are portrayed with toys created by Bandai. The first episode of Godzilla Island can be seen in the embed at the bottom of this article, to give you an idea of what the show is like.

One of if not the most important figures in the Japanese Giant Monster or “Kaiju” scene, special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya was the man responsible for a great deal of the classic monsters that dominated the screens from the 50s until his death in 1970. Credited with creating the majority of the most memorable creatures and creations which still linger in the imagination of many today, it is only appropriate that we look at some of the best-looking costumes created under his watch in our following countdown.
First, there must be two caveats for the following list: we’re limiting ourselves to one Godzilla costume as we can surely cram the list with a plethora of appearances for the Big G as his ever-changing look from film to film meant a lot of opportunity to perfect his design. This wouldn’t be fair to a lot of the other...

Godzilla feature films can be separated into six separate, distinct continuities. From Toho's 1954 original "Gojira" until "Terror of Mechagodzilla" in 1975, there were 16 films in the "Showa" era. Beginning in 1984 with "The Return of Godzilla" and running until "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995, was the "Heisei" era. Roland Emmerich's 1998 American film was, after the fact, folded into a new rebooted continuity which began in 2000 with "Godzilla 2000." That was the "Millennium" era. That era ran until 2004 and closed out with "Godzilla: Final Wars," a film where Godzilla fights just about every monster imaginable. In 2014, America took a crack at kaiju films again with a new "Godzilla," now part of a multi-film "MonsterVerse" era. Perhaps in response, Japan made "Shin Godzilla" in 2016, the only film to date in the "Shin" era. Shortly after "Shin Godzilla," there was also a trilogy of animated films on Netflix. Call those films the "Netflix" era.

Stars: Brion James, Richard Crystal, Zalman King, Robert Walden, Mark Goddard, Charles Siebert, Stefan Gierasch, Alice Ghostley, Ray Young, Bill Adler | Written and Directed by Jeff Lieberman
Showing as part of this year’s Fantasia Midnights program, Synapse Films premiered their restoration of writer/director Jeff Lieberman’s cult favorite Blue Sunshine. The 1977 film about former hippies suffering from homicidal acid flashbacks will be getting a 4K release at an undisclosed future date, and the image quality is noticeably better than on my DVD. But, what about the actual film? Glad you asked…
Blue Sunshine begins at a party where one of the guests is doing an impersonation of Rodan. “The artist?” asks one of the guests. “No, the monster” But a real monster is about to show up as Frannie loses his wig and his mind and begins shoving guests into the fireplace.
