NBC News’ Zinhle Essamuah has officially joined the “NBC News Daily” anchor team, and is leaning into the program’s goals to make news accessible in her first few months on the desk.
“[News] is not just for the elite, it should be for the person who doesn’t want to know the play-by-play of politics — it’s not just for the politicos — it’s for everyone,” Essamuah told TheWrap. “I’m big on making sure we’re keeping the show, which has already been this way, conversational and accessible for younger viewers and underrepresented communities, and that’s at the forefront of what I’m doing.”
Launched in September 2022, “NBC News Daily” airs on NBC broadcast stations daily and streams on NBC News Now. With Essamuah anchoring alongside veteran host Kate Snow from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Et, the show balances breaking news and consumer stories by including regular...

Since “NBC News Daily” launched three months ago, it has earned the title of the highest-rated new show in weekday daytime in terms of total viewers across broadcast, cable, and syndicated – a success co-hosts Morgan Radford and Vicky Nguyen attribute to telling stories that become dinnertime conversations.
“As a working journalist, odds are the people who are watching this also have similar questions, and we can help them,” Nguyen told TheWrap. “We can help them manage their money, we can help them with parenting techniques, we can help them talk about mental health issues in their family. I love the fact that our show brings complex topics to the table, and helps people break them down and make sense of their world.”

Thinking about a job in broadcast news? The two top spots have long been co-anchoring one of the nation’s big morning programs or leading an evening newscast. These days, there appears to be room for a third.
Each weekday at 1 p.m. on ABC, Amy Robach. T.J. Holmes and Dr. Jennifer Ashton host an afternoon hour of news that seems to be gaining traction. “GMA3: What You Need to Know,” originally launched as an entertainment-focused extension of the Disney network’s “Good Morning America,” but it has evolved. On Monday, the trio opened their hour with a look at how monkeypox is affecting children as well as flooding in the southwest. But there is also room for stories that are less dire: Actor Colman Domingo paid a visit last week, and Fridays feature a segment devoted to faith.
“What we have found is that viewers really are hungry for news in the afternoon,...

Tom Llamas is ready to leap into an increasingly crowded field for evening news.
The NBC News anchor, who previously led breaking news coverage for streaming platforms in addition to other duties at ABC News, is preparing for the launch of a digital evening endeavor for NBC News, a project he vows will have a kinetic feel and range a little further afield than the linear products that still represent the best-known examples of the format.
“This is going to be a fast-paced, high-story-count nightly newscast,” says Llamas in an interview. As news aficionados see an increase in programming options due to new streaming ventures, his show will need to bottle some of the ready energy he exudes, even in a simple phone conversation. “Before, television viewers used to have to find you,” Llamas adds. “Now, we have to sort of find the viewer.”
Starting on Sept. 20, Llamas’ new one-hour program will stream at 7 p.

Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb are, for many, a morning habit. NBC hopes the “Today” pair will soon become an afternoon or evening one for a different kind of viewer.
Starting June 8, the duo will take the network’s nearly seven-decade-old “Today” show into new territory. The pair will add to their on-screen duties by anchoring a half-hour “highlights” recap meant to bring the most recent “Today” news to streaming audiences. Each weekday, Kotb and Guthrie will at 1 p.m. (and in repeats at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.) co-anchor “Today in 30,” a show that aims to give viewers of the network’s “Today All Day” streaming outlet and YouTube a summary of the best interviews and tips presented earlier that morning throughout all four hours of the “Today” linear broadcasts. Those who tune in will also get a few peeks behind the scenes of the show that morning viewers will not.

The Big Three network morning shows had the tough assignment Tuesday of launching a day of marathon election coverage with precious little actual news from the polls to report.
ABC News’ “Good Morning America,” NBC’s “Today” and CBS’ “CBS This Morning” all largely focused on Election Day issues and the voting process. They brought out familiar election experts, political surrogates, data wonks, veteran analysts and reporters to discuss themes that have been well-worn over the past few weeks as the clock ticked down to the end of voting amid the pandemic.
All three shows brought out the bunting for the nation’s quadrennial ritual. “CBS This Morning” originated from the Eye’s special election headquarters desk erected with plenty of red-white-and-blue motifs from inside the Times Square headquarters of ViacomCBS.
