Drumeo’s “For the First Time” video series puts professional drummers on the spot, forcing them to improvise over notable songs they’ve never heard before. The latest “First Time” clip from the instructional platform sees longtime Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto in front of the cameras.
As we saw in a previous clips featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith challenged to play a Thirty Seconds to Mars song and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy getting pitted against a Nickelback tune, the Drumeo engineers revel in finding a song that’s both new and challenging to the drummer. In the case of the 73-year-old DeVitto, he was presented with Deftones‘ “My Own Summer (Shove It).”
Initially, DeVitto begins taking notes as he hears a drumless version of the iconic Around the Fur opener. But when the chorus hits and Chino Moreno’s screams come in, DeVitto drops his pen...

When former Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto started work on his new memoir Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness about 15 years ago, he was still angry. Joel had just fired him from his band after 30 years together, and DeVitto saw the book as a chance to vent his rage and settle old scores. “I was the ‘angry old man,'” he tells Rolling Stone. “And the anger was eating me from the inside out.”
But as the years ticked by and he had the chance to tell his side of the story,...

As happens on actual military bases, the names and faces of some "Army Wives" are changing.
When the Lifetime drama series begins its seventh season Sunday, March 10, an obvious absence will be that of founding cast member Kim Delaney ... with the departure of her character, Claudia Joy Holden, explained very early in the run. Longtime co-stars Sally Pressman and Sterling K. Brown are recurring now, but at the same time, the show is getting an influx of performers both new and familiar.
Torrey DeVitto ("Pretty Little Liars," "The Vampire Diaries") plays a veteran of three tours of duty in Iraq, now opting for domestic life with her staff sergeant husband (Burgess Jenkins); singer-actress Ashanti appears as a mother of three whose husband (Joshua Henry) serves overseas; Jesse McCartney, who also has dual careers in singing and acting, portrays a new soldier eager to make his mark; and Elle McLemore is cast as the latter's new,...

Torrey DeVitto surely is one of the busiest performers on television today.
Joining Lifetime's "Army Wives" when it starts Season 7 on Sunday, March 10, she'll soon return to ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" in what she says are "a couple of episodes." And fans of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" will see her back there Thursday, Feb. 21, as Dr. Meredith Fell ... whose help is sought by vampire Stefan, marking the first time DeVitto shares scenes on the series with real-life husband Paul Wesley.
"I always have so much fun going on that show," the actress tells Zap2it of filming the episode. "I've known the whole cast for a very long time now, and they're always so welcoming and sweet. Unfortunately -- or, actually, fortunately -- I had to start my 'Army Wives' role, so I was only on the set for one day, to finish up the episode.

Michael Sackler-Berner occasionally lands a gig as an extra on television. Like in 2009, when he played "Band Member #1" on an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent about a bunch of loft-dwelling, homicide-prone bohemians in Brooklyn.
In his few seconds onscreen, it's easy to tell Sackler-Berner's comfortable in the role. That's because in real life he is a Brooklyn-based musician -- minus the murder.
And he's no extra. Last month (Feb. 16), the singer-songwriter celebrated the digital release of two new singles, "Yes I Do" and "Shimmer and Shine," with a packed show at Joe's Pub in Manhattan's East Village. His band featured class acts Liberty DeVitto, Ben Stivers, Kevin Jenkins and David Mansfield, and ran through a stacked set of heart-felt originals. (The singles were officially released on iTunes last week.)

London, April 22 – Billy Joel and ex-drummer Liberty DeVitto have finally settled a financial dispute.
DeVitto accused Billy Joel for depriving him of royalties from many of his albums, which have collectively sold hundreds of millions worldwide, reports The Telegraph.
Liberty DeVitto was Joel’s principal drummer from 1975 to 2005 and was in Joel’s touring band.
“The case has been amicably resolved,” said Paul LiCalsi, a partner at Mitchell Silberberg and Knupp Llp in New York, who represents Joel. (Ani)...

Billy Joel's ex-bandmate has sued him for unpaid royalties. The "Uptown Girl" hitmaker allegedly conned his former drummer and friend Liberty DeVitto overdue payments.
DeVitto claims that he was Joel's drummer from 1975 to 2005 and helped him make some of his biggest selling albums.
He says he was shocked when he was rudely fired from the band one day.
He tells New York Post, "People get fired, they get severance or insurance for a certain period of time. I didn't even get a phone call. I was cold."...

Through his representative, Billy Joel clarifies rumor suggesting that he had pulled off "American Idol" performance on May 20. Contrary to the Idol outcast Scott MacIntyre's claim that Billy had been invited to the show but couldn't make it, Billy's rep tells Entertainment Weekly that the singer "was never invited on 'American Idol' to perform with Scott. He did not pull out. He's currently on tour."
Scott MacIntyre recently posted a message on his MySpace, sharing his disappointment about not taking the stage during the Idol finale. He claimed to be originally scheduled to sing with Billy Joel but since Billy "was unable to make it in the end," the duet project was said to be cut from the show.
"Perhaps Tatiana and Bikini Girl were more important after all," Scott expressed his resentment in regard of the Idol producers' decision. "According to some of the producers who witnessed our rehearsal,...
