Following in the footsteps of Aardman Animations legends Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Nick Park, a new wave of creators are driving the company forward. While its celebrated franchises, such as Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run are still much loved, and it has four Oscars wins with nine further nominations under its belt, Aardman is also focused on nurturing new talent, such as the creators of Oscar nominated short film “Robin Robin,” and series, such as “Lloyd of the Flies” and “The Very Small Creatures.”
Speaking to Variety from Aardman’s headquarters on Spike Island, Bristol, in the West of England, two of the creative minds behind “Lloyd of the Flies,” Aardman’s first CGI series, explain how the show evolved. In other articles, Variety speaks to Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, the creators of “Robin Robin,” and Lucy Izzard, the creator of “The Very Small Creatures.

South Asian representation in cinema has come a long way, with increased visibility and recognition in the last few years. However, despite the progress made, it is important to acknowledge that there is still work to be done to ensure more authentic and inclusive portraits of the diverse South Asian community in cinema and provide opportunities for South Asian filmmakers and actors to tell their stories on their own terms. In this regard, director Isher Sahota – of extensive television experience – has teamed up with writer James Hey and producer Jon Tarcy of independent production company Bonaparte Films, to bring to the public “The Effects of Lying”, a British comedy/drama with an all-Asian cast. “The Effects of Lying” is the first feature film for Sahota and Tarcy and has been acquired by the streaming service Itvx.

British independent comedy feature “The Effects of Lying” has completed post-production and will be screened for distributors at BAFTA.
Based on a script by James Hey (“Doctors”), and directed by Isher Sahota (“Hollyoaks”), the film follows a dutiful husband and loving father whose life falls apart when decades of festering secrets are exposed and he’s forced to face up to who he really is. The cast includes Ace Bhatti, Laila Rouass, Navin Chowdhry, Shaheen Khan (“Mogul Mowgli”), Lauren Patel (“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”), Adam Bregman and Mark Williams (the Harry Potter franchise).
Variety caught up with the cast and crew of the film on set in London during principal photography.
The central family in the movie happens to be British Asian. “It’s not a British Asian Film. It’s a film about family, about secrets, about loss, about desire,” says Sahota of the project, which is his debut feature.

This is the movie musical adaptation everyone should be talking about, and you don't even know it.
Newcomer Max Harwood shines very brightly, as does the rest of the cast.
Harwood owns the role of Jamie New, and his performance stands out in this movie musical.
Everybody's Talking About Jamie follows Jamie New, a 16-year-old boy who is gay and wants to become a drag queen.
Harwoods chemistry electrifies with his on-screen mother (Sarah Lancashire) and his classmate and best friend Pritti (Lauren Patel).
These scenes highlighted the beauty of this story. Based on actual events, Jamie New became a drag queen at the age of 16.
The strength portrayed by Harwood and the rest of the case to tell this story is featured throughout the film's entirety.

Everybody’s talking about Jamie, and with good reason. For one thing, he’s gorgeous. For another, he’s totally magnetic. The third reason, which ostensibly gives the movie its title, is that 16-year-old Jamie wants to be a drag queen. “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” a glitzy movie musical based on the West End hit, gives only a passing glance of Jamie’s actual drag performance, but this is plenty entertaining. Following on the heels of “The Prom,” which debuted its movie version late last year to mixed reviews, “Jamie” is a glittering addition to the fast-growing sub-genre of the queer teen musical. Finally, musicals are playing to their audiences.
Set in the Yorkshire town of Sheffield, England, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” revolves around aspiring teen drag queen Jamie (Max Harwood). Though he’s comfortably out at his stuffy high school, he still incurs the wrath of the occasional bully...

This review of “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” was first published after the film played at Outfest Los Angeles 2021.
If you were among those left with a sour aftertaste following last year’s “The Prom,” a star-studded treacle about clueless adults helping small-town lesbian teens, then “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” may come as a welcome palate cleanser. The high-spirited “be yourself” celebration, adapted from the British stage musical, is similarly saccharine, but the sweetener in this one has a notably less artificial flavor.
A delightful if predictable display of unabashed queer joy, the film brings back director Jonathan Butterell, who developed the theater version with musician Dan Gillespie Sells and writer Tom MacRae (also the screenwriter). That original production was in turn based on the subjects from the documentary “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.”

This gutsy musical comedy about a wannabe drag queen teenager adheres firmly to the Britfilm plucky outsiders template
This big-hearted musical comedy started life on the stage in 2017 – and 10 years before that as a TV documentary about the true story of gay teenager Jamie Campbell, whose dream was to be a drag queen. The broad characterisation, dialogue and scene transitions probably worked better on stage, but they give a bounce to this feelgood Britfilm version, which has newcomer Max Harwood as Jamie, Sarah Lancashire as his tenderly understanding mum Margaret, and Lauren Patel as his best mate Priti; Sharon Horgan has the thankless task of playing the uptight teacher who won’t let Jamie turn up to the school prom in drag, while Richard E Grant has a scene-stealer as Hugo Battersby, Aka “Loco Chanel”, a veteran drag queen artiste who campaigned against homophobia in the 1980s and who mentors Jamie in his new vocation.

Unlike most of the kids in his class, 16-year-old Jamie New knows what he wants to be when he grows up: a drag queen. And unlike most of the fabulous aspiring female impersonators who’ve strutted on-screen before him, he has surprisingly few obstacles in his way. Jamie has an understanding mom, a supportive best friend and a school full of closed-minded students who don’t take much to come around, which makes this glittery big-screen adaptation of 2017’s well-liked West End tuner an unusually festive affair. “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is to queer teens what “High School Musical” was to, well, their more closeted peers: an upbeat, be-yourself pep rally for self-questioning young adult audiences.
Pre-pandemic, the feel-good musical was snapped up by Fox for big-screen release, where it would have followed in the footsteps of the studio’s “Love, Simon” — a second unapologetically gay, refreshingly nonjudgmental coming-out and...

Amazon Prime Video has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming musical adaptation of ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’.
Inspired by true events, the film follows Jamie New (Harwood), a teenager from Sheffield, who dreams of life on stage. While his classmates plan their livelihoods after they leave school, Jamie contemplates revealing his secret career ambition to become a fierce and proud drag queen. His best friend Pritti (Patel) and his loving mum (Lancashire) shower him with endless support, while local drag legend Miss Loco Chanelle (Grant) mentors him toward his debut stage performance. But Jamie also has to contend with an unsupportive father (Ineson), an uninspired careers advisor (Horgan), and some ignorant school kids who attempt to rain on his sensational parade. In rousing and colourful musical numbers, Jamie and his community inspire one another to overcome prejudice, be more accepting, and step out of the darkness into the spotlight.

There’s no better time than the first time, at least when it comes to actors debuting in their inaugural feature films.
In the history of the Oscars, more than 25 actors have been nominated for their feature debuts across all four acting categories. Among them are winners like Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and Anna Paquin (“The Piano”) and nominees such as Edward Norton (“Primal Fear”) and Barkhad Abdi (“Captain Phillips”). This year, an intriguing mix of performers, both seasoned and youthful, are trying their hand at the game of awards season.
Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” casts real-life nomads from different areas of the United States for her moving portrait of the American West. The brilliant Swankie tackles her role like a veteran in what one could argue is the film’s most effective element. Her counterparts Linda May and especially Bob Wells also have their moments, and it...

“I want to be a drag queen…when I close my eyes it’s all I ever see” confesses Max Harwood as the titular character in “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.” Though the pandemic has pushed big-screen adaptations of the musicals “In the Heights” and “West Side Story” out to far flung release dates, this infectious British tuner is ready to vogue and waack its way into cinemas just in time for this year’s Oscar race. You can check out the newly released trailer for the film above.
Jamie’s story has had a long journey to get this point. The musical was inspired by true life events depicted in Jenny Poplewell’s 2011 documentary “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.” Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae set the tale to songs for a stage musical adaptation which was a hit on London’s West End. It nabbed five Olivier nominations in 2017, including Best New Musical.
