Director Marc Isaac’s latest documentary The Road: A Story of Life and Death exposes the relatively unexplored lives of those immigrants who, having abandoned their homes in search of richer lives in London, now live along the A5, an old road that runs all the way from Marble Arch, London to Holyhead, Wales. Rather than simply shoving facts and figures down our throats, Isaacs lets the characters to the talking, as they speak candidly about their lives now and the hardships they’ve faced along the way.
It’s an approach that, thanks to the trustworthy relationships Isaac establishes with the colourful array of people he brings to the audience’s attention (from those who are unrelenting in their determination to make a better lives for themselves, to those who are, for all intents and purpose, past the point of trying), works in a moving and inspiring manner. Twelve films will go head to head in formal competition for first time, and there will be 14 world premieres
The BFI London film festival has revealed a new look that will give it more of the feel of Cannes and Venice, with 12 films going head to head in a formal competition for the first time.
Salman Rushdie's movie adaptation of his novel Midnight's Children will compete with Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths and films by directors such as Sally Potter, Michael Winterbottom, François Ozon and Jacques Audiard.
It is quite a change for the festival, which has previously resisted going down the competition route. "It helps to position the festival more internationally," said the festival's new director, Clare Stewart. "It puts you in the playing field with festivals like Cannes, Venice and Berlin."
Having said that, organisers are adamant they are not competing with other events and they want...
