New U.S. management will be gasoline on the flames – an injection of cross Atlantic energy that lights a fire under each and every employee. Season one’s audience increased through the run and Rebecca Ferguson, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, said it was this “word of mouth” that partly drove the scheduling decision.
Speaking to Deadline, she credited the show’s sophistication paired with entertainment value as the driving force behind its success.

BBC Three has greenlit a drama following five underprivileged Black students who win scholarships to an elite British boarding school from BAFTA-nominated Timewasters creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor and Three Girls producer Studio Lambert.
In Boarders, the students, who are all based in inner-city London, will find out what life is like in a Harry Potter-esque world as they learn about themselves, their identities and forge crushes, friendships and enemies. The BBC said the six-parter will “look at the experience of going to a top public school from a unique perspective.”
Boarders is Lawrence Taylor’s first BBC writing gig. He is best known for creating ITV2’s BAFTA-nominated Timewasters, a satirical show about time travel that he also stars in. Having also been home to the likes of Normal People and Gavin and Stacey, BBC Three could catapult him to stardom.

Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright is not giving up on a third season for the lesbian period drama series following its cancellation last week by HBO.
Wainwright told RadioTimes.com in an interview that HBO’s decision not to move forward with a third season was a surprise, noting however that BBC, the show’s co-producer, “certainly [is] up for” continuing with the show” but would need another streaming partner. The BBC has said that it was “in discussions” with Wainwright about “what’s next”.
“I think if HBO had been up for it, there’d have been no question, Wainwright added. “It’s been a very successful show in all areas for them – it’s had fantastic reviews, it’s had a very respectable audience and on top of that it’s had an impact on the community of gay women. We have the most extraordinary fanbase.”

The BBC has poached well-respected scripted executive Lindsay Salt from Netflix, to serve as the public broadcaster’s new director of drama — one of the most high-profile jobs in British television.
Salt — who commissioned Netflix shows such as the forthcoming “One Day” and “Half Bad” — replaces Piers Wenger, who left the BBC to oversee the international film and TV slate for Hollywood indie studio A24 alongside BBC Films boss Rose Garnett.
Salt’s hire is a major coup for the BBC and marks an especially rare occasion where a U.K. public broadcaster has lured away streaming talent. The current generally flows the other way, with Netflix having snapped up BBC drama executive Mona Qureshi to join its scripted series team earlier this year.
Salt, who worked closely with Anne Mensah at Netflix, will report directly to Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, and lead the drama commissioning team.

The BBC has unveiled Lindsay Salt, Netflix UK scripted commissioner, as its next Director of Drama.
Salt replaces Piers Wenger, who departed to A24 earlier this year to run its international division alongside former BBC Films boss Rose Garnett. BBC Drama Commissioner Ben Irving was doing the role on an interim basis and had been tipped as frontrunner to take it permanently along with Channel 4 Drama Head Caroline Hollick.
Reporting to Anne Mensah, who was also linked with the BBC job, Salt has been with Netflix for three years, commissioning the likes of Baby Reindeer, One Day, The F*** it Bucket, Palomino and Half Bad and working across hits such as Heartstopper and The Crown.
She used to run development at Sky Drama, during which time she also worked with Mensah.

HBO has canceled the historical period drama “Gentleman Jack” after two seasons, TheWrap has confirmed. The series — which drew from landholder and “the first modern lesbian” Anne Lister’s diaries — aired on the network’s lower-viewed Monday nights.
“HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Gentleman Jack,'” HBO said in a statement. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers. We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and to the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life. The BBC has commissioned a six-part drama about the UK’s ska and two-tone music scene, which hails from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
Two Tone (working title) will tell the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two tone music, which grew from the grass roots of the English cities Coventry and Birmingham in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The music united black, white and Asian youths during a tough period for race relations in the UK.
The series also marks the beginning of a new deal between Knight and Banijay-uk backed Kudos, which gives the Deadwater Fell indie a first look at all of his future UK-based projects. The agreement also includes a commitment to grow the local workforce in Birmingham, using Knight’s Digbeth Loc Studios as a base.
Deadline first revealed Knight and Kudos were working on Two-Tone in November 2020.
News of the series, which will air on BBC1 and the BBC iPlayer, comes in the same month Knight’s lauded gangster drama Peaky Blinders came to an end on the BBC.
Kudos and Knight’s Nebulastar are co-producing in association with the former’s northern subsidiary Kudos North, Matthew James Wilkinson’s Stigma Films (Choose Or Die) and Nick Angel, the former Island Records A&r director who was a co-founder of Colin Firth’s Random Films.
Shooting will begin Birmingham at Digbeth Loc later this year.
“This is a project that’s literally very close to home and I’m developing characters and themes that are set in the early 80s but hopefully are very contemporary. Of course, the soundtrack will be sensational,” said Knight, who is creator, writer and executive producer.
Kudos’ Karen Wilson, Martin Haines, Phil Temple and Laura Conway are exec producers, along with Wilkinson, Angel and the BBC’s Tommy Bulfin. Banijay Rights will handle international distribution.
Ben Irving, Acting Director of BBC Drama said: “Steven has taken his knowledge of this time and place and used it to weave a brilliantly original and characterful drama, set against the musical backdrop of ska and two tone. We are thrilled to be able to bring this unique piece to viewers on the BBC.”...

Sally Wainwright’s “Gentleman Jack” is almost back for Season 2 on HBO.
The Suranne Jones-starring show about real-life historical figure Anne Lister — who lived in Yorkshire in the 1800s, and who was known not only for defying societal stereotypes about women and business, style of dress, and all manner of things, and who kept a coded diary of her romances with women — returns next month, HBO confirmed Thursday. The network also dropped a brand new teaser.
In the video clip, someone calls Anne “gentleman Jack” to her back, a nickname she got for her style of dress, prompting a shocked face from Jones.
It also hints at the drama ahead across its eight episode second season as Anne and her wife, the wealthy Ann Walker (they said vows together at home), as they try to carry out their relationship in private, but with society trying to invade their business.

Exclusive: The BBC is developing A24’s adaptation of 2020 Booker Prize winner Shuggie Bain, Deadline can reveal.
We understand talks have commenced and decision over greenlight will be made by Ben Irving, who will take over as Interim Drama Director from incumbent Piers Wenger in May.
Shuggie Bain producer A24 has hired Wenger and BBC Film Director Rose Garnett to oversee its international slate and for Wenger to sign off the greenlight would likely represent a conflict of interest.
A24 and Scott Rudin Productions won the rights to produce the novel for TV in late 2020. At the time, Scott Rudin and Eli Bush were slated to produce and author Douglas Stuart set to adapt.
Rudin has since been embroiled in scandal after ex-staffers spoke out about his abusive behavior, and he has removed himself from active projects including five films with A24.

A24, the indie studio behind “Moonlight” and “Lady Bird,” has tapped BBC executives Rose Garnett and Piers Wenger to oversee its international film and TV slate.
The appointments are a major coup for A24 — and a heavy loss for the BBC — given Garnett and Wenger are the go-to execs in the U.K. for film and scripted television, respectively, anywhere the Beeb is concerned.
Garnett most recently served as director of BBC Film, where she has overseen a slate of movies including “The Power of the Dog,” “The Nest” and “Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always.” Prior to that, she worked at Film4 where she helped produce the likes of “The Favourite,” “Room” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.”

The BBC and HBO have teased a set of first look images for the second season of Sally Wainwright’s Gentleman Jack.
The images include lead Suranne Jones as Anne Lister and Peaky Blinders’ Sophie Rundle as Anne Lister’s now wife.
The second series from BBC Studios-owned indie Lookout Point will see Anne Lister and Ann Walker move in together in Lister’s Shibden Hall home as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates, which is quite the move in the mid-nineteenth century.
Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with her Halifax hometown on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.
Season two will again use the real life diaries of Anne Lister, part of which were written in code.
The series stars Gemma Jones, Timothy West, Katherine Kelly,...

“Irrfan: Dialogues with the Wind,” a book about the experiences of Geneva-based filmmaker Anup Singh who directed the late Indian actor Irrfan Khan in two acclaimed films — “Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost” (2013) and “The Song of Scorpions” (2017) — will be published by Copper Coin on Feb. 14. Khan, India’s then best-known actor globally with credits including “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) “Life of Pi” (2012) and “The Lunchbox” (2013), died in 2020. The book was revealed on Jan. 7, on what would have been Khan’s 54th birthday.
In the book, Singh offers an intimate glimpse into the working relationship between a director and an actor as they trudge through mutual wariness, uncertainties, and blunders and during the course of the journey reveals an insight into the creative processes of both artists. The duo had a third project planned together — “Lasya” — before the actor was taken ill.

Hit BBC drama “Happy Valley” will come to an end after its third season.
Sally Wainwright’s BAFTA-winning series — an early British drama success story that sold to broadcasters around the world and landed on Netflix in the U.S. and other key markets — will shoot season 3 in and around West Yorkshire in 2022, the BBC confirmed on Tuesday. While a third, six-episode round of the policing series has always been on the cards, Wainwright’s busy writing schedule has left a considerable gap since season 2 last aired on the BBC in 2016, and the creator was keen to get a next season of HBO-bbc drama “Gentleman Jack” out of the way before tackling season 3.
For its final season, production on “Happy Valley” is changing hands, with BBC Studios-backed Lookout Point taking over from Studiocanal’s Red, a longtime Wainwright collaborator until recent years. Lookout Point will co-produce with AMC Networks,...
